وعترسه: ألزقه بالأرض، وقيل: جذبه إليها وضغطه ضغطا شديدا
And he pressed him down: he made him stick to the ground, or it was said: he pulled him towards it and squeezed him intensely.
لقد أردت أن آتي به مصفودا، فقال: تأتيني به مصفودا تعترسه؟
I wanted to bring him in chains, and he said: You bring him to me in chains, overpowering him?
إن رجلا جاء إلى عمر برجل قد كتفه فقال: أتعترسه؟ يعني أتقهره وتظلمه دون حكم حاكم
A man came to Omar with a man he had handcuffed and said: Are you overpowering him? Meaning, are you subduing and wronging him without a judge's ruling?
إذا كان الإمام تخاف عترسته فقل: اللهم رب السموات السبع ورب العرش العظيم كن لي جارا من فلان
If the ruler is one whose harshness you fear, say: O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne, be my neighbor against so-and-so.
والعترس والعترس والعتريس، كله: الضابط الشديد
And al-ʿatras, al-ʿatras, and al-ʿatrīs, all mean: the one who grips strongly.
وقيل: هو الجبار الغضبان
And it was said: he is the angry tyrant.
والعتريس والعنتريس: الداهية
And al-ʿatrīs and al-ʿantaris: the cunning one.
والعتريس: الذكر من الغيلان، وقيل: هو اسم للشيطان
And al-ʿatrīs: the male of the ghouls, and it was said: it is the name of Satan.
