قال الليث: الطست هي في الأصل طسة ولكنهم حذفوا تثقيل السين فخففوا وسكنت فظهرت التاء التي في موضع هاء التأنيث لسكون ما قبلها
Al-Layth said: Al-tast is originally 'tassah', but they removed the doubling of the 's' and lightened it, and it became silent, so the 't' appeared in place of the feminine 'h' due to the silence of the preceding letter.
ومن العرب من يتمم الطسة [الطسة] فيثقل ويظهر الهاء
And some of the Arabs complete al-tassah by doubling and showing the 'h'.
والوجه الثاني أن العرب لا تجمع الطست إلا بالطساس ولا تصغرها إلا طسيسة
And the second reason is that the Arabs do not pluralize 'tast' except with 'tassaas' and do not make it diminutive except 'taseesah'.
قال: ومن قال في جمعها الطسات فهذه التاء هي تاء التأنيث بمنزلة التاء التي في جماعات النساء
He said: And whoever says its plural is 'tassaat', then this 't' is the feminine 't' like the 't' in 'jama'aat al-nisaa'.

Al-Mazini said a eloquent Arab recited to me: If presented to a man of 'Aybli, disheveled in his form, hidden, he yearned for her like the yearning for the basin.

He said: By the sign that the Messenger of Allah informed us of. I said: And what is the sign? He said: That the sun rises in the morning as if it were a basin with no rays.
قال سفيان الثوري: الطس هو الطست والأكثر الطس بالعربية
Sufyan al-Thawri said: Al-tass is al-tast, and more common is al-tass in Arabic.
قال الأزهري: أراد أنهم لما عربوه قالوا طس
Al-Azhari said: He meant that when they Arabized it, they said 'tass'.
والطساس: بائع الطسوس، والطساسة: حرفته
And 'al-tassaas': is the seller of basins, and 'al-tassaasah': is his trade.
