وَإِنَّهُ لَشَكِسٌ لَكِسٌ أَي عُسِرٌ.

And indeed he is difficult and stubborn, meaning unyielding.

وَالمُشَكِّسُ: كَالشَّكِسِ؛ عَنِ ابْنِ الأَعْرَابِيِّ؛

And al-mushakkis: is like al-shakis; according to Ibn Al-A'rabi;

وَتَشَاكَسَ الرَّجُلاَنِ: تَضَادَّا.

And the two men opposed each other: they became antagonistic.

ضَرَبَ اللهُ مَثَلاً رَجُلاً فِيهِ شُرَكَاءُ مُتَشَاكِسُونَ وَرَجُلاً سَلَمًا لِرَجُلٍ هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلاً.

Allah strikes an example: a man wherein are contentious partners, and a man belonging to one master. Do they compare in likeness?

أَي مُتَضَايِقُونَ مُتَضَادُّونَ،

Meaning they are in distress, antagonistic,

وَالشُّرَكَاءُ المُتَشَاكِسُونَ: العَسِرُونَ المُخْتَلِفُونَ الَّذِينَ لاَ يَتَّفِقُونَ،

And the contentious partners: are the difficult, differing ones who do not agree,

وَأَنْتُمْ شُرَكَاءُ مُتَشَاكِسُونَ؛ أَي مُخْتَلِفُونَ مُتَنَازِعُونَ.

And you are contentious partners; meaning differing, disputing.

وَمَحَلَّةٌ شَكْسٌ: ضَيِّقَةٌ؛

And a place of 'shaks': is narrow;

وَأَنَا الَّذِي بَيَّتَكُمُ فِي فِتْيَةٍ، ... بِمَحَلَّةٍ شَكْسٍ وَلَيْلٍ مُظْلِمٍ

And I am the one who sheltered you among youths, ... in a narrow place and a dark night.

وَاللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ يَتَشَاكَسَانِ أَي يَتَضَادَّانِ.

And the night and the day oppose each other, meaning they are antagonistic.

وَبَنُو شَكْسٍ، بِفَتْحِ الشِّينِ: تُجَّارٌ بِالمَدِينَةِ؛ عَنِ ابْنِ الأَعْرَابِيِّ.

And Banu Shaks, with fatha on the shin: are merchants in Medina; according to Ibn Al-A'rabi.
