Ibn al-Athir said: It is possible that it is from 'irbas', which is provocation, meaning they would tell him what displeased and angered him,
قال: ويحتمل أن يكون من قولهم جاء بأمور ربس أي سود، يعني يأتونه بداهية،
He said: And it is possible that it is from their saying 'he brought heinous matters', meaning black ones, meaning they would bring him a calamity,
ويحتمل أن يكون من الربيس وهو المصاب بمال أو غيره أي يصيبون العباس بما يسوءه.
And it is possible that it is from 'al-rabees', which is the one afflicted with property or otherwise, meaning they would afflict Al-Abbas with what displeased him.
وجاء بمال ربس [ربس] أي كثير.
And he brought abundant wealth, meaning plentiful.

وقال أبو عمرو: جاء فلان يتبربس إذا جاء متبخترا.
And Abu Amr said: So-and-so came swaggering if he came proudly.
واربس الرجل اربساسا أي ذهب في الأرض.

وقيل: اربس إذا غذا في الأرض.
