And he threshed the food, he threshed it with diyāsan, so it was threshed, and the place is a madāsah.
ودائس ومنق : الدائس الذي يدوس الطعام ويدقه ليخرج الحب منه، وهو الدياس، وقلبت الواو ياء لكسرة الدال.
And dā'is and munaqq: the dā'is is he who treads and pounds the food to extract the grain from it, and it is the diyās, and the wāw was changed to yā' due to the kasrah of the dāl.
والدوائس: البقر العوامل في الدوس؛ يقال: قد ألقوا الدوائس في بيدرهم.
And the dawā'is: the working cows in threshing; it is said: they have put the dawā'is in their threshing floor.
والدوس: شدة وطء الشيء بالأقدام.
And al-daws: the intensity of treading upon a thing with the feet.
ومن هذا يقال: طريق مدوس.
And from this it is said: a trodden path.
أتتهم الخيل دوائس أي يتبع بعضهم بعضا.
The horses came to them dawā'is, meaning one following another.
والمدوس: الذي يداس به الكدس يجر عليه جرا، والخيل تدوس القتلى بحوافرها إذا وطئتهم؛ وأنشد:
And the madūs: that which is dragged over the threshing pile, and the horses trample the slain with their hooves when they tread upon them; and he recited:
فداسوهم دوس الحصيد فأهمدوا
So they trampled them like the trampling of harvested crops, and they perished.
يقال: فلان ديس من الديسة أي شجاع شديد يدوس كل من نازله، وأصله دوس على فعل، فقلبت الواو ياء لكسرة ما قبلها كما قالوا ريح، وأصله روح.
It is said: So-and-so is dīs from al-dīsah, meaning brave and formidable, who tramples anyone who confronts him, and its origin is daws on the pattern fa'al, so the wāw was changed to yā' due to the kasrah of the preceding letter, as they said rīḥ, and its origin is rūḥ.
ويقال: نزل العدو ببني فلان في الخيل فجاسهم وحاسهم وداسهم إذا قتلهم وتخلل ديارهم وعاث فيهم.
And it is said: The enemy descended upon the Banu so-and-so with cavalry, so they raided them, attacked them, and trampled them, meaning they killed them, infiltrated their homes, and ravaged them.
ودياس الكدس ودراسه واحد.
And diyās al-kads and dirāsah are the same.
قال الأصمعي: الدوس تسوية الحديقة وترتيبها، مأخوذ من دياس السيف وهو صقله وجلاؤه؛ قال الشاعر:
Al-Asma'i said: Al-daws is the leveling and arranging of a garden, derived from the diyās of a sword, which is its polishing and smoothing; the poet said:
صافي الحديدة قد أضر بصقله ... طول الدياس، وبطن طير جائع
Pure iron, its polishing has been harmed... by the length of the polishing, and the belly of a hungry bird.
ويقال للحجر الذي يجلى به السيف: مدوس.
And the stone with which the sword is polished is called madūs.
