And ad-dibsī: a type of dove that came with the form of a relative adjective but is not one, he said: it is attributed to a bird of the color dubs, and it is said to be attributed to date syrup because they change the attribution and add the daal like ad-dahri and as-sahli.
وفي الحديث: أن أبا طلحة كان يصلي في حائط له فطار دبسي فأعجبه ؛ قال: هو طائر صغير قيل هو ذكر اليمام.
And in the hadith: Abu Talha was praying in his garden when a dibsi bird flew out and pleased him; it was said: it is a small bird, said to be a male dove.
وجاء بأمور دبس أي دواه منكرة، وأنكر ذلك على أبي عبيد فقال: إنما هو ربس، ويقال للسماء إذا مطرت، وفي التهذيب إذا خالت للمطر: دري دبس؛ عن ابن الأعرابي، ولم يفسره بأكثر من هذا؛ قال ابن سيده: وعندي أنه إنما سميت بذلك لاسودادها بالغيم.
And he came with matters of dubs, meaning strange affairs, and he objected to that from Abu Ubaid and said: it is only ribs, and it is said of the sky when it rains, and in At-Tahdhib when it seems like rain: 'darrī dubs'; from Ibn al-A'rabi, and he did not explain it further than this; Ibn Sidah said: and in my opinion, it was only named so because of its blackness due to clouds.
ودبس الشيء واراه؛ عن ابن الأعرابي، وأنشد:
And dubsa something and hid it; from Ibn al-A'rabi, and he recited:
إذا رآه فحل قوم دبسا
When the stud of a people saw it, he hid it
وأنشد أيضا لركاض الدبيري:
And he also recited for Rakkad ad-Dubayri:
لا ذنب لي إذ بنت زهرة دبست ... بغيرك ألوى، يشبه الحق باطله
