كن حلسا من أحلاس بيتك حتى تأتيك يد خاطئة أو منية قاضية
Be a steadfast one from the steadfast of your house until a sinful hand or a decisive death comes to you.
قالوا يا رسول الله فما تأمرنا؟ قال: كونوا أحلاس بيوتكم
They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you command us?' He said, 'Be the steadfast ones of your houses.'
عد منها فتنة الأحلاس، هو الكساء الذي على ظهر البعير تحت القتب، شبهها بها للزومها ودوامها
Among them is the trial of the 'hils', which is the covering on the back of the camel under the saddle; it is likened to it because of its steadfastness and permanence.

So they said: 'O Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, we are the steadfast of horses'; they mean their staying on their backs.
وأحلست الأرض واستحلست: كثر بذرها فألبسها
And the land became abundant with seeds and covered, meaning its seeds increased and covered it.
عشب مستحلس ترى له طرائق بعضها تحت بعض من تراكبه وسواده
Dense grass, you see paths within it, some under others, due to its density and darkness.
واستحلس الليل بالظلام: تراكم
And the night became dense with darkness: it accumulated.
والأحلس الذي لونه بين السواد والحمرة، تقول منه: احلس احلساسا
And al-ahlas is one whose color is between black and red; you say from it: ahlas ahlasasan.
والحلس، بكسر اللام: الشجاع الذي يلازم قرنه
And al-hils, with kasra on the lam: the brave one who stays with his opponent.
والحلس والحلابس: الذي لا يبرح ويلازم قرنه
And al-hils and al-halabis: one who does not leave and stays with his opponent.
أحلست السماء: مطرت مطرا رقيقا دائما
The sky rained: it rained a light, continuous rain.
والحلس: أن يأخذ المصدق النقد مكان الإبل
And al-hils: that the tax collector takes cash instead of camels.
وما تحلس منه بشيء وما تحلس شيئا أي أصاب منه
And he did not get anything from it, and he did not get anything, meaning he obtained something from it.
هو محلوس على الدبر أي ملزم هذا الأمر إلزام الحلس الدبر
He is compelled to the rear, meaning he is obligated to this matter like the hils is obligated to the rear.

إنا قد استحلسنا الخوف واكتحلنا السهر وأصابتنا خزية لم يكن فيها برررة أتقياء ولا فجرة أقوياء
Indeed, we have been overcome by fear, our eyes have been accustomed to sleeplessness, and a disgrace has befallen us in which there were neither righteous pious nor strong wicked.
أنت ابن بعثطها وسرسورها وحلسها وابن بجدتها وابن سمسارها وسفسيرها بمعنى واحد
You are its origin, its core, its steadfastness, its essence, its merchant, and its interpreter, all meaning one thing.
والحلس: الرابع من قداح الميسر؛ قال اللحياني: فيه أربعة فروض، وله غنم أربعة أنصباء إن فاز، وعليه غرم أربعة أنصباء إن لم يفز
