And when they say: 'I heard neither a sound nor a jingle from him,' they use the kasra and follow one word with another.

وأجرس: علا صوته، وأجرس الطائر إذا سمعت صوت مره؛

And ajrasa: his voice became loud, and a bird ajrasa if you hear the sound of its young;

قال جندل بن المثنى الحارثي الطهوي يخاطب امرأته: لقد خشيت أن يكب قابري ... حتى إذا أجرس كل طائر، قامت تعنظي بك سمع الحاضر

Jundal bin Al-Muthanna Al-Harithi Al-Tahwi said, addressing his wife: 'I feared my grave would be overturned... until every bird made its sound, she stood, making the listeners hear you.'

ويقال: سمعت جرس الطير إذا سمعت صوت مناقيرها على شيء تأكله.

And it is said: 'I heard the jaras of the birds' if you hear the sound of their beaks on something they eat.

وفي الحديث: فتسمعون صوت جرس طير الجنة ؛ أي صوت أكلها.

And in the hadith: 'So you will hear the sound of the jaras of the birds of Paradise'; meaning the sound of their eating.

ومننه الحديث: فأقبل القوم يدبون ويخفون الجرس ؛ أي الصوت.

And from it is the hadith: 'So the people approached, crawling and hiding the jaras'; meaning the sound.

وفي حديث سعيد بن جبير، رضي الله عنه، في صفة الصلصال قال: أرض خصبة جرسة ؛ الجرسة: التي تصوت إذا حركت وقلبت

And in the hadith of Sa'id bin Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, describing clay, he said: 'fertile land, jarasa'; al-jarasa: that which makes a sound when moved and turned.

وأجرس الحادي إذا حدا للإبل؛ قال الراجز: أجرس لها يا ابن أبي كباش، ... فما لها الليلة من إنفاش، غير السرى وسائق نجاش

And the driver ajrasa when he urged on the camels; the rajaz poet said: 'Ajrasa for them, O son of Abi Kabash... they have no escape tonight, except for the night journey and a swift driver.'

وجرست وتجرست أي تكلمت بشيء وتنغمت به.

And jarasa and tajarasa mean to speak something and modulate it.

وأجرس الحي: سمعت جرسه.

And ajrasa the tribe: you heard its jaras.

وفي التهذيب: أجرس الحي إذا سمعت صوت جرس شيء.

And in Al-Tahdhib: ajrasa the tribe if you hear the sound of something's jaras.

وأجرسني السبع: سمع جرسي.

And the wild beast ajrasani: it heard my jaras.

وجرس الكلام: تكلم به.

And jaras al-kalam: to speak it.

وفلان مجرس لفلان: يأنس بكلامه وينشرح بالكلام عنده؛ قال: أنت لي مجرس، إذا ... ما نبا كل مجرس

And so-and-so is mujarris for so-and-so: he feels at ease with his speech and is pleased by the speech with him; he said: 'You are mujarris to me, when... all mujarris are estranged.'

وقال أبو حنيفة: فلان مجرس لفلان أي مأكل ومنتفع.

And Abu Hanifa said: 'So-and-so is mujarris for so-and-so,' meaning nourished and benefiting.

وقال مرة: فلان مجرس لفلان أي يأخذ منه ويأكل من عنده.

And Murra said: 'So-and-so is mujarris for so-and-so,' meaning he takes from him and eats from his provision.

والجرس: الذي يضرب به. وأجرسه: ضربه.

And al-jaras: that which is struck. And ajrasahu: he struck it.

وروي عن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنه قال: لا تصحب الملائكة رفقة فيها جرس ؛ هو الجلجل الذي يعلق على الدواب؛

And it is narrated from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said: 'Angels do not accompany a group that has a jaras'; it is the jingle that is hung on animals;

وأجرس الحلي: سمع له صوت مثل صوت الجرس، وهو صوت جرسه؛ قال العجاج: تسمع للحلي إذا ما وسوسا، ... وارتج في أجيادها وأجرسا، زفزفة الريح الحصاد اليبسا

And ajrasa the jewelry: you hear from it a sound like the sound of a bell, and it is its jaras; Al-A'raj said: 'You hear the jewelry when it rustles, ... and it shakes on their necks and ajrasa, like the rustling of the wind on dry harvest.'

وجرس الحرف: نغمته. والحروف الثلاثة الجوف: وهي الياء والألف والواو، وسائر الحروف مجروسة.

And jaras al-harf: its intonation. And the three letters of the throat: they are ya, alif, and waw, and the rest of the letters are majrusah.

أبو عبيد: والجرس الأكل، وقد جرس يجرس.

Abu Ubaid: And al-jaras is eating, and he has eaten, he eats.

والجاروس: الكثير الأكل.

And al-jarus: the one who eats a lot.

وجرست الماشية الشجر والعشب تجرسه وتجرسه جرسا: لحسته.

And the livestock jarasat the trees and grass, tajarusuhu and tajarusuhu jarasan: they licked it.

وجرست البقرة ولدها جرسا: لحسته، وكذلك النحل إذا أكلت الشجر للتعسيل؛ قال أبو ذؤيب يصف نحلا: جوارسها تأوي الشعوف دوائبا، ... وتنصب ألهابا مصيفا كرابها

And the cow jarasat its calf jarasan: it licked it, and likewise the bees when they eat from trees for honey-making; Abu Dhu'ayb said, describing bees: 'Their jawaris take refuge in the high places, flowing... and they set up their hives in the summer like their nests.'

وجرست النحل العرفط تجرس [تجرس] إذا أكلته، ومنه قيل للنحل: جوارس.

And the bees jarasat the 'Arfata, tajarisu [tajarisu] if they eat it, and from this the bees are called jawaris.

وفي الحديث: أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، دخل بيت بعض نسائه فسقته عسلا، فتواطأت ثنتان من نسائه أن تقول أيتهما دخل عليها: أكلت مغافير، فإن قال: لا، قالت: فشربت إذا عسلا جرست نحله العرفط ؛ أي أكلت ورعت.

And in the hadith: 'The Prophet, peace be upon him, entered the house of one of his wives and she gave him honey. Two of his wives conspired to say, whichever of them he entered upon: 'You ate maghafir.' If he said: 'No,' she would say: 'Then you drank honey that her bees jarasat the 'Arfata'; meaning she ate and grazed.'

ومنه قيل للنحل: جوارس.

And from this, bees are called jawaris.

والليث: النحل تجرس العسل جرسا وتجرس النور، وهو لحسها إياه، ثم تعسله.

And Al-Layth: The bees tajarisu the honey jarasan and tajarisu the pollen, which is their licking it, then they make it into honey.

ومر جرس من الليل أي وقت وطائفة منه.

And marra jarasun min al-layl means a time and a portion of it.

ورجل مجرس ومجرس: مجرب للأمور؛

And a man mujarris and mujarras: experienced in affairs;

وقال اللحياني: هو الذي أصابته البلايا، وقيل: رجل مجرس إذا جرس الأمور وعرفها، وقد جرسته الأمور أي جربته وأحكمته؛

And Al-Lihyani said: He is one who has been afflicted by calamities. And it was said: A man is mujarras if he has tested and known affairs, and affairs have jarasathu, meaning they have tested him and made him wise;

وأنشد: مجرسات غرة الغرير ... بالزجر، والريم على المزجور

And he recited: 'Majrusat the ignorance of the ignorant... by deterrence, and excellence over the deterred.'

والتجريس: التحكيم والتجربة، فيقول: هذه العصور قد جرست الغر منا أي حكمت بالزجر عما لا ينبغي إتيانه.

And al-tajris: wisdom and experience, so he says: 'These eras have majrasat the ignorant among us,' meaning they have ruled by deterrence from what should not be done.

وفي حديث ناقة النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم: وكانت ناقة مجرسة أي مجربة مدربة في الركوب والسير.

And in the hadith of the Prophet's she-camel, peace be upon him: 'And it was a mujarrasah she-camel,' meaning experienced and trained in riding and travel.

والمجرس من الناس: الذي قد جرب الأمور وخبرها؛

And al-mujarras among people: he who has experienced and known affairs;

ومننه حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه، قال له طلحة: قد جرستك الدهور أي حنكتك وأحكمتك وجعلتك خبيرا بالأمور مجربا، ويروى بالشين المعجمة بمعناه.

And from it is the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, to whom Talhah said: 'The ages have jarasataka,' meaning they have seasoned you, made you wise, and made you an expert and experienced in affairs. And it is narrated with the letter sheen, with the same meaning.

أبو سعيد: اجترست واجترشت أي كسبت.

Abu Sa'id: Ijtarrastu and Ijtarrashtu mean I earned.
