دفعه وضربه مثل نكزه ووكزه.
He pushed and struck him, like 'nakaza' and 'wakaza'.
من توضأ ثم خرج إلى المسجد لا ينهزه إلا الصلاة غفر له ما خلا من ذنبه
Whoever performs ablution and then goes to the mosque, with nothing urging him but prayer, will be forgiven his past sins.
نهز رأسه إذا حركه
He moved his head if he stirred it.
من أتى هذا البيت ولا ينهزه إليه غيره رجع وقد غفر له
Whoever comes to this House, with nothing urging him to it but itself, returns having been forgiven.
أنه نهز راحلته أي دفعها في السير.
He urged his mount, meaning he pushed it in its journey.
ونهزت الدابة إذا نهضت بصدرها للسير
And the animal 'nahazat' if it rose with its chest for the journey.
والنهز: التناول باليد والنهوض للتناول جميعا.
And 'al-nahz': the taking with the hand and the rising to take, both.
والناقة تنهز بصدرها إذا نهضت لتمضي وتسير
And the she-camel 'tanahazu' with her chest when she rises to go and travel.
نهوز بأولاها زجول بصدرها
Moving forward with her front legs, agile with her chest.
والدابة تنهز بصدرها إذا ذبت عن نفسها
And the animal 'tanahazu' with its chest when it defends itself.
قياما تذب البق عن نخراتها ... بنهز، كإيماء الرؤوس المواتع
Standing, driving flies from their nostrils... with a push, like the nodding of lifeless heads.
النهزة اسم للشيء الذي هو لك معرض كالغنيمة.
The 'nihza' is the name for something that is presented to you like spoils.
والنهزة: الفرصة تجده من صاحبك.
And the 'nihza': the opportunity you find from your companion.
فلان نهزة المختلس أي هو صيد لكل أحد
So-and-so is a 'nihza' for the thief, meaning he is prey for everyone.
وانتهز الحق إذا الحق وضح أي قلبه وأسرع إلى تناوله.
And seize the truth when the truth becomes clear, meaning to embrace it and hasten to take it.
وإن دعي انتهز.
And if he is called, he seizes the opportunity.
وتقول: انتهزها قد أمكنتك قبل الفوت.
And you say: Seize it, it has become possible for you before it passes.
المناهزة: المبادرة.
Al-munahaza: the initiative.
ناهزت الصيد فقبضت عليه قبل إفلاته.
I vied for the prey and caught it before it escaped.
وانتهزها وناهزها: تناولها من قرب وبادرها واغتنمها
And seize it and vie for it: take it from nearby, hasten to it, and seize it.
وقد ناهزتهم الفرص
And opportunities have presented themselves to me.
ولقد علمت، إذا الرجال تناهزوا، ... أيي وأيكم أعز وأمنع
And I surely knew, when men competed with each other, ... who among me and you is more honored and protected.
ويقال للصبي إذا دنا للفطام: نهز للفطام، فهو ناهز، والجارية كذلك، وقد ناهزا
And it is said of a boy when he nears weaning: he is 'nahaza lil-fitaam', so he is 'nahiz', and the female child is likewise, and they have both approached it.
ترضع شبلين في مغارهما، ... قد ناهزا للفطام أو فطما
She nurses two cubs in their den, ... who have approached weaning or have been weaned.
ناهز فلان الحلم ونهزه إذا قاربه.
So-and-so approached puberty, or he neared it.
وقد ناهزت الاحتلام.
And I have approached puberty.
ناهز الخمسين: قاربها.
He approached fifty: he neared it.
وإبل نهز مائة ونهاز مائة ونهاز مائة أي قرابتها.
And camels near one hundred, and 'nahaz' one hundred, and 'nahaz' one hundred, meaning close to it.
كان الناس نهز عشرة آلاف أي قربها.
The people were near ten thousand, meaning close to it.
وكان المال نهزة عشرة آلاف أي قربها، وحقيقته كان ذا نهز.
And the money was 'nahzat' ten thousand, meaning close to it, and its reality was that it was of that amount.
ونهز الفصيل ضرع أمه: مثل لهزه.
And the young camel 'nahaza' its mother's udder: like 'lahzuhu'.
وفلان ينهز دابته نهزا ويلهزها لهزا إذا دفعها وحركها.
And so-and-so urges his mount with a 'nahz' and 'lahz' if he pushes and moves it.
نهزه ولهزه بمعنى واحد.
He pushed him and 'lahzahu', meaning the same.
ونهز الناقة ينهزها نهزا: ضرب ضرتها لتدر صعدا.
And he struck the she-camel, striking her udder to make her milk flow upwards.
والنهوز من الإبل: التي يموت ولدها فلا تدر حتى يوجأ ضرعها.
And the 'nahuz' among camels: she whose young dies and does not lactate until her udder is struck.
وناقة نهوز: لا تدر حتى ينهز لحياها أي يضربا
And a 'nahuz' she-camel: she does not lactate until her udders are struck.
وأنهزت الناقة إذا نهز ولدها ضرعها
And the she-camel 'anhazat' if her young struck her udder.
ونهزت بالدلو في البئر إذا ضربت بها إلى الماء لتمتلئ.
And she dipped the bucket in the well if she struck it towards the water to fill it.
ونهز الدلو ينهزها نهزا: نزع بها
And he pulled the bucket, pulling it with a 'nahz': he drew it up.
غدت هذه الحمر لهذا الماء كما غدت الدلاء النواهز لماء يمؤود
These wild donkeys went to this water as the 'nawāhiz' buckets went to a water source.
وقيل: النواهز اللواتي ينهزن في الماء أي يحركن ليمتلئن، فاعل بمعنى مفعول، والأول أفضل.
And it was said: The 'nawāhiz' are those that are dipped in the water, meaning they are moved to be filled, an active participle in the sense of a passive one, and the first is better.
وهما يتناهزان إمارة بلد كذا أي يبتدران.
And they are competing for the governorship of such-and-such a country, meaning they are hastening for it.
أتاه الجارود وابن سيار يتناهزان إمارة أي يتبادران إلى طلبها وتناولها
Al-Jarud and Ibn Sayyar came to him, competing for the governorship, meaning they were hastening to seek and attain it.
فليناهزها وليقتطع وليرسل إلى جاره الذي لا وبر له
So let him compete for it and take his share and send to his neighbor who has no wool.
نهز الرجل: مد بعنقه وناء بصدره ليتهوع
The man 'nahaza': he stretched his neck and leaned forward with his chest to vomit.
أو مصدور ينهز قيحا أي يقذفه
Or someone with chest pain 'yanhazu' pus, meaning he expels it.

ونهزتني إليك حاجة أي جاءت بي إليك؛ وأصل النهز: الدفع، كأنها دفعتني وحركتني.
And a need 'nahazatni' to you, meaning it brought me to you; and the origin of 'nahz' is pushing, as if it pushed me and moved me.
فإذا قدمت فانحر ناقة فأطعمهم بودكها ودقيقها، ولا تكثر إطعامهم في أول ما تطعمهم ونوز
So when you arrive, slaughter a she-camel and feed them with its fat and flour, and do not give them too much to eat when you first feed them, but sparingly.
