ونهزت بالدلو في البئر إذا ضربت بها إلى الماء لتمتلئ.
And she dipped the bucket in the well if she struck it towards the water to fill it.
ونهز الدلو ينهزها نهزا: نزع بها
And he pulled the bucket, pulling it with a 'nahz': he drew it up.
غدت هذه الحمر لهذا الماء كما غدت الدلاء النواهز لماء يمؤود
These wild donkeys went to this water as the 'nawāhiz' buckets went to a water source.
وقيل: النواهز اللواتي ينهزن في الماء أي يحركن ليمتلئن، فاعل بمعنى مفعول، والأول أفضل.
And it was said: The 'nawāhiz' are those that are dipped in the water, meaning they are moved to be filled, an active participle in the sense of a passive one, and the first is better.
وهما يتناهزان إمارة بلد كذا أي يبتدران.
And they are competing for the governorship of such-and-such a country, meaning they are hastening for it.
أتاه الجارود وابن سيار يتناهزان إمارة أي يتبادران إلى طلبها وتناولها
Al-Jarud and Ibn Sayyar came to him, competing for the governorship, meaning they were hastening to seek and attain it.
فليناهزها وليقتطع وليرسل إلى جاره الذي لا وبر له
So let him compete for it and take his share and send to his neighbor who has no wool.
