النجاء والظفر بالأمنية والخير
Salvation and victory in achieving a wish and good.
فاز به فوزا ومفازا ومفازة
He succeeded in it with success, a place of success, and a desolate place.
إن للمتقين مفازا حدائق وأعنابا
Indeed, for the righteous is a place of success: gardens and grapes.
الفوز الظفر بالخير والنجاة من الشر
Al-fawz is the attainment of good and salvation from evil.
يقال: فاز بالخير وفاز من العذاب
It is said: He succeeded with good and was saved from punishment.
أفازه الله بكذا ففاز به أي ذهب به
Allah caused him to succeed with such-and-such, so he succeeded with it, meaning he took it.
فلا تحسبنهم بمفازة من العذاب
So do not think of them as being in a place of escape from the punishment.
معناه ببعيد من العذاب
Its meaning is far from the punishment.
بمنجاة من العذاب
In safety from the punishment.
وأصل المفازة مهلكة فتفاءلوا بالسلامة والفوز
And the origin of al-mafāzah is destruction, so they took it as an omen of safety and success.
ويقال: فاز إذا لقي ما يغتبط، وتأويله التباعد من المكروه
And it is said: He succeeded when he encountered something to be pleased with, and its interpretation is distancing from the disliked.
والمفازة أيضا: واحدة المفاوز
And al-mafāzah is also: one of the deserts.
سميت بذلك لأنها مهلكة من فوز أي هلك
It was named thus because it is a place of destruction, from 'fawz' meaning 'he perished'.
وقيل: سميت تفاؤلا من الفوز النجاة
And it was said: it was named as an omen of safety from 'al-fawz' (success/salvation).
فاز القدح فوزا أصاب
The lot-cup succeeded with a success, it hit the mark.
وإذا تساهم القوم على الميسر فكلما خرج قدح رجل قيل: قد فاز فوزا
And when people cast lots for gambling, whenever a man's lot came out, it was said: He has succeeded with a success.
والفوز أيضا: الهلاك
And al-fawz is also: destruction.
فاز يفوز وفوز أي مات
He perished, he perishes, and he perished, meaning he died.
إذا ما توى كعب، وفوز جرول؟
When Ka'b dies, and Jurwal perishes?
يقول، فلا يعيا بشيء يقوله ومن قائليها من يسيء ويعمل
He says, so he is not perplexed by anything he says, and among its speakers are those who do wrong and act.
وتوى: مات وكذا فوز
And 'tawa': died, and likewise 'fawz'.
وقد قيل إنه لا يقال فوز فلان حتى يتقدم الكلام كلام فيقال: مات فلان وفوز فلان بعده
And it has been said that one does not say 'Fulan perished' until preceding speech is mentioned, saying: Fulan died, and Fulan perished after him.
يشبه بالمصلي من الخيل بعد المجلي
It is likened to a horse that falls behind after the leader.
فوز الرجل إذا مات
A man's perishing when he dies.
فوز من قراقر إلى سوى خمسا، إذا ما ركب الجبس بكى
Perishing from Qaraqir to Suwa, five times, when the camel rider wept.
ويقال للرجل إذا مات: قد فوز أي صار في مفازة ما بين الدنيا والآخرة من البرزخ الممدود
And it is said of a man when he dies: he has perished, meaning he has become in a desolate place between this world and the next, in the extended barrier.
أم فاز فازلم به شأو العنن أي مات
Or did he perish, did he perish with it the extent of the cloud? Meaning he died.
ويقال: فوز الرجل بإبله إذا ركب بها المفازة
And it is said: A man's perishing with his camels when he rides them through the desert.
فوز من قراقر إلى سوى
Perishing from Qaraqir to Suwa.
واستقبل سفرا بعيدا ومفازا
And he faced a long journey and a desolate place.
المفاز والمفازة: البرية القفر، وتجمع المفاوز
Al-mafāz and al-mafāzah: the barren wilderness, and its plural is al-mafāwiz.
ويقال: فاوزت بين القوم وفارضت بمعنى واحد
And it is said: I competed between the people and I competed, with one meaning.
المفازة: المهلكة على التطير، وكل قعر مفازة
Al-mafāzah: the destruction as an omen, and every hollow is a desolate place.
والمفازة والفلاة إذا كان بين الماءين ربع من ورد الإبل وغب من سائر الماشية
And al-mafāzah and al-falāh, if it is between two watering places, a quarter for the camels to drink and a day of rest for other livestock.
سميت الصحراء مفازة لأن من خرج منها وقطعها فاز
The desert was named a desolate place because whoever exits it and crosses it succeeds.
المفازة التي لا ماء فيها وإذا كانت ليلتين لا ماء فيها فهي مفازة وما زاد على ذلك كذلك
The desolate place is that which has no water in it, and if it has no water for two nights, it is a desolate place, and what exceeds that is likewise.
سميت المفازة من فوز الرجل إذا مات
The desolate place was named from a man's perishing when he dies.
ويقال: فوز إذا مضى
And it is said: he perished if he passed away.
فوز تفويزا: صار إلى المفازة، وقيل: ركبها ومضى فيها
He went to the desolate place with 'tafwīz', it was said: he rode it and went into it.
فوز خرج من أرض إلى أرض كهاجر
He went out from one land to another like Hagar.
تفوز: كفوز
He went to the desolate place: like 'fawz'.
ضلال خوي إذ تفوز عن حمى ليشرب غبا بالنباج ونبتلا
Lost is Khawi when he goes to the desolate place from the protected area to drink every other day at Al-Nabaj and Nibtala.
وفاز الرجل وفوز: هلك
And the man succeeded, and perished: he was destroyed.
والفازة: بناء من خرق وغيرها تبنى في العساكر
And al-fāzah: a structure of cloth and other materials built in military camps.
والفازة مظلة تمد بعمود
And al-fāzah is a canopy extended by a pole.
