وفي حديث الشعبي: ما طلع السماك قط إلا غارزا ذنبه في برد ؛ أراد السماك الأعزل، وهو الكوكب المعروف في برج الميزان وطلوعه يكون مع الصبح لخمس تخلو من تشرين الأول، وحينئذ يبتدئ البرد، وهو من غرز الجراد ذنبه في الأرض إذا أراد أن يبيض.
And in the hadith of Al-Sha'bi: The star Thuria never rose except with its tail inserted into the cold; he meant Al-Thuria Al-A'zal, which is the known star in the constellation Libra, and its rising is at dawn five days before the end of October, and at that time the cold begins, and it is from the locust inserting its tail into the ground when it wants to lay eggs.

And the locust inserted (its ovipositor) while it was ghāriz and gharaẓat: it fixed its tail in the ground to lay eggs, like razat; and a locust is ghāriz, and it is said: ghārizah if it inserts its tail into the ground to lay eggs; and al-maghraz (with fatha on the ra): the place of its eggs.
ويقال: غرزت عودا في الأرض وركزته بمعنى واحد.
And it is said: I inserted a stick into the ground, and I fixed it, with the same meaning.

And al-gharaẓ: the stirrup of the saddle, and it was said: the stirrup of the saddle is made of stitched leather, and if it is made of iron or wood, it is a rikab, and anything that secures the feet in a mount is gharaẓ.
وغرز رجله في الغرز يغرزها غرزا: وضعها فيه ليركب وأثبتها.
And he inserted his leg into the gharaẓ, he inserts it gharaẓan: he placed it in it to ride and fixed it.

And ightaraza: to ride.
ابن الأعرابي: والغرز للناقة مثل الحزام للفرس.
Ibn Al-A'rabi: And the gharaẓ for a she-camel is like the girth for a horse.
وقال لبيد في غرز الناقة: وإذا حركت غرزي أجمرت ... أو قرابي، عدو جون قد أبل
And Labid said about the gharaẓ of a she-camel: And when I moved my gharaẓ, it became hot... or my saddlebag, a strong enemy has become weak.
وفي الحديث: كان، صلى الله عليه وسلم، إذا وضع رجله في الغرز، يريد السفر، يقول: بسم الله ؛ الغرز: ركاب كور الجمل.
And in the hadith: When he, peace be upon him, placed his foot in the gharaẓ, intending to travel, he would say: Bismillah; al-gharaẓ: the stirrups of the camel's saddle.
وفي الحديث: أن رجلا سأله عن أفضل الجهاد فسكت عنه حتى اغترز في الجمرة الثالثة أي دخل فيها كما يدخل قدم الراكب في الغرز.
And in the hadith: A man asked him about the best jihad, and he remained silent until he 'ightedharaza' in the third ember, meaning he entered into it as a rider's foot enters the stirrup.
ومننه حديث أبي بكر أنه قال لعمر، رضي الله عنهما: استمسك بغرزه أي اعتلق به وأمسكه واتبع قوله وفعله ولا تخالفه؛ فاستعار له الغرز كالذي يمسك بركاب الراكب ويسير بسيره.
And from it is the hadith of Abu Bakr that he said to Umar, may Allah be pleased with them: Hold onto his gharaẓ, meaning cling to him, hold him, follow his word and deed, and do not oppose him; so he metaphorically used gharaẓ for him like one who holds onto the rider's stirrup and travels with his journey.
واغترز السير اغترازا إذا دنا مسيره، وأصله من الغرز.
And ightaraza the journey ightizāzan if its course approached, and its origin is from al-gharaẓ.
والغارز من النوق: القليلة اللبن.
And the ghāriz of she-camels: the one with little milk.
وغرزت الناقة تغرز «1» غرازا وهي غارز من إبل غرز: قل لبنها؛ قال القطامي: كأن نسوع رحلي، حين ضمت ... حوالب غرزا ومعى جياعا
And the she-camel's milk became scarce, she produces gharaẓan, and she is ghāriz from camels that are gharaẓ: her milk became little; Al-Qutami said: As if the straps of my saddle, when they gathered... were around she-camels with little milk and hungry ones.
وغرزها صاحبها: ترك حلبها أو كسع ضرعها بماء بارد ليذهب لبنها وينقطع، وقيل: التغريز أن تدع حلبة بين حلبتين وذلك إذا أدبر لبن الناقة.
And its owner made its milk scarce: he left its milking or rubbed its udder with cold water so that its milk would go and stop, and it was said: al-taghrīz is to leave one milking between two milkings, and that is when the camel's milk is declining.
الأصمعي: الغارز الناقة التي قد جذبت لبنها فرفعته؛ قال أبو حنيفة: التغريز أن ينضح ضرع الناقة بالماء ثم يلوث الرجل يده في التراب، ثم يكسع الضرع كسعا حتى يدفع اللبن إلى فوق، ثم يأخذ بذنبها فيجتذبها به اجتذابا شديدا، ثم يكسعها به كسعا شديدا وتخلى، فإنها تذهب حينئذ على وجهها ساعة.
Al-Asma'i: Al-ghāriz is the she-camel whose milk has been drawn and raised; Abu Hanifa said: Al-taghrīz is to sprinkle the she-camel's udder with water, then the man wets his hand in the dirt, then he rubs the udder vigorously until the milk is pushed upwards, then he takes its tail and pulls it strongly, then he rubs it strongly and releases it, then it will run away for a while.
وفي حديث عطاء: وسئل عن تغريز الإبل فقال: إن كان مباهاة فلا، وإن كان يريد أن تصلح للبيع فنعم.
And in the hadith of Atta: He was asked about the taghrīz of camels, and he said: If it is for boasting, then no, but if he wants to prepare them for sale, then yes.
وغرزت الأتان: قل لبنها أيضا.
And the she-donkey's milk became scarce: her milk also became little.
أبو زيد: غنم غوارز وعيون غوارز ما تجري لهن دموع.
Abu Zayd: Sheep that are ghawāriz and eyes that are ghawāriz, from which tears do not flow.
وفي الحديث قالوا: يا رسول الله، إن غنمنا قد غرزت أي قل لبنها.
And in the hadith they said: O Messenger of Allah, our sheep have become gharaẓ, meaning their milk is scarce.
يقال: غرزت الغنم غرازا وغرزها صاحبها إذا قطع حلبها وأراد أن تسمن؛ ومنه قصيد كعب: تمر، مثل عسيب النخل ذا خصل ... بغارز لم تخونه الأحاليل
It is said: The sheep became gharaẓ, gharaẓan, and its owner made it gharaẓ if he stopped milking it and wanted it to become fat; and from it is the poem of Ka'b: Dates, like a cluster of palm trees with bunches... from a gharaẓ (udder) that the teats have not betrayed.
الغارز: الضرع قد غرز وقل لبنه، ويروى بغارب.
Al-ghāriz: The udder has become gharaẓ and its milk is little, and it is narrated as ghārib.
والغارز من الرجال: القليل النكاح، والجمع غرز.
And al-ghāriz among men: one with little intercourse, and the plural is ghuruẓ.
والغريزة: الطبيعة والقريحة والسجية من خير أو شر؛ وقال اللحياني: هي الأصل والطبيعة؛ قال الشاعر: إن الشجاعة، في الفتى ... والجود من كرم الغرائز
And al-gharīzah: nature, disposition, and character, whether good or bad; and Al-Lihyani said: it is the origin and nature; the poet said: Indeed, courage in a young man... and generosity are from the nobility of instincts.
وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه: الجبن والجرأة غرائز أي أخلاق وطبائع صالحة أو رديئة، واحدتها غريزة.
And in the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: Cowardice and boldness are ghara'iz, meaning good or bad morals and natures, the singular of which is gharīzah.
ويقال: الزم غرز فلان أي أمره ونهيه.
And it is said: Stick to so-and-so's gharaẓ, meaning his command and prohibition.
الأصمعي: والغرز، محرك، نبت رأيته في البادية ينبت في سهولة الأرض.

غيره: الغرز ضرب من الثمام صغير ينبت على شطوط الأنهار لا ورق لها، إنما هي أنابيب مركب بعضها في بعض، فإذا اجتذبتها خرجت من جوف أخرى كأنها عفاص أخرج من مكحلة وهو من الحمض؛ وقيل: هو الأسل، وبه سميت الرماح على التشبيه، وقال أبو حنيفة: هو من وخيم المرعى، وذلك أن الناقة التي ترعاه تنحر فيوجد الغرز في كرشها متميزا عن الماء لا يتفشى ولا يورث المال قوة، واحدتها غرزة، وهو غير العرز الذي تقدم في العين المهملة.
Others: Al-gharaẓ is a small type of thamām that grows on the banks of rivers, it has no leaves, it is just tubes fitted into each other, so if you pull them out, they come out of the hollow of another as if it were a kohl container taken out of a kohl pot, and it is from the sour plants; and it was said: it is the reed, and spears are named after it by analogy, and Abu Hanifa said: it is from bad pasture, because the she-camel that grazes on it is slaughtered and al-gharaẓ is found in its stomach, distinct from water, it does not spread and does not give strength to the livestock, its singular is ghazrah, and it is different from al-'araz which was mentioned previously with the unpointed 'ayn.
وروي عن عمر، رضي الله عنه، أنه رأى في روث فرس شعيرا في عام مجاعة فقال: لئن عشت لأجعلن له من غرز النقيع ما يغنيه عن قوت المسلمين أي يكفه عن أكل الشعير، وكان يومئذ قوتا غالبا للناس يعني الخيل والإبل؛ عنى بالغرز هذا النبت؛ والنقيع: موضع حماه عمر، رضي الله عنه، لنعم الفيء والخيل المعدة للسبيل.
And it was narrated from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that he saw barley in the dung of a horse in a year of famine, so he said: If I live, I will make for it from the gharaẓ of Al-Naqi' what will suffice it from the sustenance of the Muslims, meaning it will suffice it from eating barley, and at that time barley was the dominant sustenance for people, meaning horses and camels; he meant by al-gharaẓ this plant; and Al-Naqi': a place that Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, designated as a protected area for the spoils of war and horses prepared for the cause of Allah.
وروي عن نافع عن ابن عمر، رضي الله عنهما، أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، حمى غرز النقيع لخيل المسلمين ؛ النقيع، بالنون: موضع قريب من المدينة كان حمى لنعم الفيء والصدقة.
And it was narrated from Nafi' from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, designated the gharaẓ of Al-Naqi' as a protected area for the horses of the Muslims; Al-Naqi', with the letter nun: a place near Medina that was a protected area for the spoils of war and charity.
وفي الحديث أيضا: والذي نفسي بيده لتعالجن غرز النقيع.
And in the hadith also: And by Him in whose hand is my soul, you will treat the gharaẓ of Al-Naqi'.
والتغاريز: ما حول من فسيل النخل وغيره.
And al-taghārīz: what is moved from palm saplings and other things.
وفي الحديث: إن أهل التوحيد إذا أخرجوا من النار وقد امتحشوا ينبتون كما تنبت التغاريز ؛ قال القتيبي: هو ما حول من فسيل النخل وغيره، سمي بذلك لأنه يحول من موضع إلى موضع فيغرز، وهو التغريز والتنبيت، ومثله في التقدير التناوير لنور الشجر، ورواه بعضهم بالثاء المثلثة والعين المهملة والراءين.
And in the hadith: Indeed, the people of Tawhid, when they are brought out of the Fire and have been burnt, they will grow like al-taghārīz grow; Al-Qutaybi said: it is what is moved from palm saplings and other things, so named because it is moved from one place to another and planted, and it is al-taghrīz and al-tanbīt, and similar to it in estimation is al-tanāwīr for the blossoms of trees, and some narrated it with the three-dotted tha, the unpointed 'ayn, and two ra's.
