ورأيت بالصمان ناقة مخرت من قبل ذنبها ليلا فأصبحت وهي ممخورة قد أكلت العنزة من عجزها طائفة

And I saw in al-Ṣammān a she-camel that was wounded from its tail at night, and it became wounded in the morning, having been eaten by the 'Anzah from its hindquarters.

طرقتها العنزة فمخرتها

The 'Anzah attacked it and wounded it.

And among the well-known proverbs of the Arabs: 'Anz rode a camel in a howdah.

شر يوميها وأغواه لها

The worst and most misleading of her two days.

وأصله أن امرأة من طسم يقال لها عنز أخذت سبية

And its origin is that a woman from Ṭasm named 'Anz was taken captive.

فحملوها في هودج وألطفوها بالقول والفعل فعند ذلك قالت: شر يوميها وأغواه لها

So they carried her in a howdah and treated her kindly with words and deeds, at which point she said: The worst and most misleading of her two days.

تقول: شر أيامي حين صرت أكرم للسباء؛ يضرب مثلا في إظهار البر باللسان والفعل لمن يراد به الغوائل

She means: the worst of my days when I became honored as a captive; it is used as a metaphor for showing kindness with tongue and deed to one who is intended harm.

وكان لا تزف امرأة من جديس حتى يؤتى بها إليه فيكون هو المفتض لها أولا

And no woman from Judays was brought to her groom until she was brought to him, and he would deflower her first.

فخرجت رافعة صوتها شاقة جيبها كاشفة قبلها، وهي تقول: لا أحد أذل من جديس

So she came out, raising her voice, tearing her garment, exposing her private parts, saying: No one is more humiliated than Judays.

أهكذا يفعل بالعروس

فغدرت بهم جديس، فقتل كل من حضر الطعام ولم يفلت منهم أحد إلا رجل يقال له رياح بن مرة

So Judays betrayed them, and everyone present at the food was killed, and no one escaped except a man called Riyāḥ ibn Murrah.

وتوجه حتى أتى حسان بن تبع فاستجاشه عليهم ورغبه فيما عندهم من النعم

And he went until he came to Ḥassān ibn Tubba', and incited him against them and tempted him with the wealth they possessed.

وذكر أن عندهم امرأة يقال لها عنز، ما رأى الناظرون لها شبها

And he mentioned that they had a woman called 'Anz, whom no observer had seen her like.

وكان بها زرقاء اليمامة، وكانت أعلمتهم بجيش حسان من قبل أن يأتي بثلاثة أيام

And among them was Zarqā' al-Yamāmah, who had informed them of Ḥassān's army three days before he arrived.

فأوقع بجديس وقتلهم وسبى أولادهم ونساءهم وقلع عيني زرقاء وقتلها

So he attacked Judays, killed them, took their children and women captive, plucked out Zarqā''s eyes, and killed her.

وأتي إليه بعنز راكبة جملا

And 'Anz riding a camel was brought to him.

أخلق الدهر بجو طللا مثل ما أخلق سيف خللا

Time has worn down the ruins of Jaw like a sword has worn down its flaws.

وتداعت أربع دفافة تركته هامدا منتخلا

And four winds collapsed, leaving it desolate and chosen.

ويل عنز واستوت راكبة فوق صعب، لم يقتل ذللا

Woe to 'Anz, and she became mounted upon a difficult one, not killed easily.

لا ترى من بيتها خارجة وتر اهن إليها رسلا

She is not seen leaving her house, and you see them sending messengers to her.

منعت جوا، ورامت سفرا ترك الخدين منها سبلا

She prevented Jaw, and intended a journey, leaving her cheeks as paths.

يعلم الحازم ذو اللب بذا أنما يضرب هذا مثلا

The discerning, intelligent one knows this: this is only used as a metaphor.

ونصب شر يوميها بركبت على الظرف أي ركبت بحدج جملا في شر يوميها

And 'the worst of her two days' is placed adverbially, meaning she rode a camel in a howdah on the worst of her two days.

والعنزة: عصا في قدر نصف الرمح أو أكثر شيئا فيها سنان مثل سنان الرمح

And al-'Anzah: a staff about half the length of a spear or more, with a point like a spearhead.

وقيل: في طرفها الأسفل زج كزج الرمح يتوكأ عليها الشيخ الكبير

And it was said: at its lower end is a socket like a spear socket, which an old man leans on.

وقيل: هي أطول من العصا وأقصر من الرمح والعكازة قريب منها

And it was said: it is longer than a staff and shorter than a spear, and close to a crutch.

لما طعن أبي بن خلف بالعنزة بين ثدييه قال: قتلني ابن أبي كبشة

When Abī ibn Khalaf was stabbed with the 'Anzah between his breasts, he said: The son of Abī Kabhah has killed me.

تعنز واعتنز: تجنب الناس وتنحى عنهم

Ta'annaza and I'tanz: to avoid people and withdraw from them.

وقيل: المعتنز الذي لا يساكن الناس لئلا يرزأ شيئا

And it was said: al-Mu'tanz is one who does not live with people so as not to be burdened by anything.

وعنز الرجل: عدل، يقال: نزل فلان معتنزا إذا نزل حريدا في ناحية من الناس

And 'ʿanaza a man: to turn aside, it is said: So-and-so descended as a mu'tanz if he descended alone in a corner away from people.

ورأيته معتنزا ومنتبذا إذا رأيته متنحيا عن الناس

And I saw him as mu'tanz and muntabidh if I saw him withdrawing from people.

أباتك الله في أبيات معتنز عن المكارم، لا عف ولا قاري

May God make you spend the night in dwellings of withdrawal from noble deeds, neither hospitable nor a host.

أي ولا يقري الضيف

Meaning, nor does he host a guest.

ورجل معنز الوجه إذا كان قليل لحم الوجه في عرنينه شمم
