And he competed with me in dominance, so I prevailed over him, meaning he tried to overpower me, and I defeated him.

And al-'azz is abundant rain.
وقيل: مطر عز شديد كثير لا يمتنع منه سهل ولا جبل إلا أساله.
And it was said: 'azz rain is severe, intense, and abundant, from which neither plain nor mountain can escape without being flooded.
أرض معزوزة: أصابها عز من المطر.
An 'ard ma'zuzah: land struck by abundant rain.
والعزاء: المطر الشديد الوابل.
And al-'azaa' is intense, torrential rain.
والعزاء: الشدة.
And al-'azaa' means severity.
والعزيزاء من الفرس: ما بين عكوته وجاعرته، يمد ويقصر، وهما العزيزاوان
And al-'aziza' from a horse is the area between its flank and its hindquarters, it can be lengthened or shortened, and they are al-'azizawan.
والعزيزاوان: عصبتان في أصول الصلوين فصلتا من العجب وأطراف الوركين
And al-'azizawan are two sinews at the base of the loins, separated from the hip bone and the edges of the hips.

That Al-Lat was an idol belonging to Thaqif, and Al-'Uzza was an idol belonging to Quraysh and Banu Kinanah.
والعزى سمرة كانت لغطفان يعبدونها وكانوا بنوا عليها بيتا وأقاموا لها سدنة
And Al-'Uzza was an acacia tree belonging to Ghatafan which they worshipped, and they built a house over it and appointed caretakers for it.
فهدم البيت وأحرق السمرة وهو يقول: يا عز، كفرانك لا سبحانك ... إني رأيت الله قد أهانك
So he demolished the house and burned the acacia tree, saying: 'O 'Uzza, we reject you, not praise you... I have seen that Allah has disgraced you.'
وعبد العزى: اسم أبي لهب، وإنما كناه الله عز وجل فقال: تبت يدا أبي لهب، ولم يسمه لأن اسمه محال.
And 'Abd al-'Uzza is the name of Abu Lahab; Allah, the Exalted, only gave him a kunya, saying: 'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab,' and did not name him because his name was inappropriate.
وأعزت البقرة إذا عسر حملها.
And the cow 'a'azzat if her pregnancy becomes difficult.
واستعز الرمل: تماسك فلم ينهل.
And the sand 'ista'azzat: it became firm and did not shift.
واستعز الله بفلان «1» واستعز فلان بحقي أي غلبني.
And Allah made him strong, and so-and-so overpowered me in my right, meaning he defeated me.
واستعز بفلان أي غلب في كل شيء من عاهة أو مرض أو غيره.
And he was overpowered by so-and-so, meaning he was overcome in everything, whether affliction, illness, or other.
وقال أبو عمرو: استعز بالعليل إذا اشتد وجعه وغلب على عقله.
And Abu Amr said: 'ista'azza bil-'alil' when his pain intensified and overwhelmed his mind.
لما قدم المدينة نزل على كلثوم بن الهدم وهو شاك ثم استعز بكلثوم فانتقل إلى سعد بن خيثمة.
When he arrived in Medina, he stayed with Kulthum bin Al-Hadhram, who was ill, then he became severe with Kulthum, so he moved to Sa'd bin Khaythama.
أنه استعز برسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، في مرضه الذي مات فيه أي اشتد به المرض وأشرف على الموت
That the illness intensified for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in his final sickness, meaning the illness became severe for him and he neared death.
يقال: عز يعز، بالفتح «2»، إذا اشتد، واستعز عليه إذا اشتد عليه وغلبه.
It is said: 'azza ya'izzu, with fatha, if it intensifies, and 'ista'azza 'alayhi' if it intensifies against him and overcomes him.
إنكم لمعزز بكم، على جميعكم شاة
Indeed, you are burdened by it; a sheep is incumbent upon all of you.
قوله لمعزز بكم أي مشدد بكم ومثقل عليكم الأمر
His saying 'li-mu'azzazin bikum' means it is intensified for you and the matter is burdensome upon you.
وفلان معزاز المرض أي شديده.
And so-and-so is 'ma'azaz al-marad', meaning the severe one of the illness.
ويقال له إذا مات أيضا: قد استعز به.
And it is also said of him when he dies: 'qad ista'azza bihi', meaning he was overcome.
والعزة، بالفتح: بنت الظبية
And al-'izzah, with fatha, is the female gazelle.
هان على عزة بنت الشحاج ... مهوى جمال مالك في الإدلاج
