إنما هي جلد الأرض، ولا يكون الحزيز إلا في أرض كثيرة الحصباء.
It is only the skin of the earth, and Al-Haziz is only found in land with much gravel.
والحزيز والحزاز من الرجال: الشديد على السوق والقتال والعمل؛
And Al-Haziz and Al-Hazzaz among men: the strong in trade, combat, and work;
فهي تفادى من حزاز ذي حزق

وهو الشديد جذب الرباط، وهذا كقولك: هذا ذو زيد وأتانا ذو تمر؛

والمعنى هذا زيد وأتانا تمر.
And the meaning is: This is Zayd, and we were brought dates.
مر بنا ذو عون بن عدي، يريد: مر بنا عون بن عدي،
Dhu 'Awn bin 'Uday passed by us, meaning: 'Awn bin 'Uday passed by us,
ويقال أخذ بحزته أي بعنقه،

وهو من السراويل حزة وحجزة؛

وقيل أراد بحجزته، وهي لغة فيها.
And it was said he meant by his waistband, and it is a dialect for it.
تقول حجزة السراويل ولا تقل حزة.

يقال حجزته وحذلته وحزته وحبكته، والحزة العنق.
It is said 'hajaztuhu', 'hadhaltuhu', 'hazatuhu', and 'habaktuhu', and Al-Hazzah is the neck.
آخذ بحزته

والحزة من السراويل الحجزة.
And the 'hazzah' of trousers is the 'hujzah'.
الإثم حزاز القلوب ؛
Sin is the sharp pain of hearts;
هي الأمور التي تحز فيها أي تؤثر كما يؤثر الحز في الشيء،
It is the matters that are cut into, meaning they affect as cutting affects a thing,
وهو ما يخطر فيها من أن تكون معاصي لفقد الطمأنينة إليها،
And it is what comes to mind of sins due to the loss of tranquility towards them,
وهي بتشديد الزاي جمع حاز.
And it is with a shaddah on the Zay, a plural of 'haz'.
يقال إذا أصاب مرفق البعير طرف كركرته فقطعه وأدماه، قيل: به حاز.
It is said when the camel's elbow hits its hump and cuts it and makes it bleed, it is said: he has a wound.
يعني ما حز في القلب وحك.
Meaning what is cut into the heart and chafes.
العرك والحاز واحد، وهو أن يحز في الذراع حتى يخلص إلى اللحم ويقطع الجلد بحد الكركرة.
Al-'Arku and Al-Hazz are one, and it is to cut into the arm until it reaches the flesh and cuts the skin with the edge of the hump.
إذا أثر فيه قيل ناكت، فإذا حز به قيل به حاز، فإذا لم يدمه فهو الماسح؛

الحز: الحين والوقت؛
Al-Hazz: the time and the moment;
حتى إذا حززت مياه رزونه ... وبأي حز ملاوة يتقطع
Until the time of his water arrived... And at what time of his life does he break up?
أي بأي حين من الدهر.
Meaning at what time of life.
الحزة: الساعة؛
Al-Hazzah: the hour;
يقال: أي حزة أتيتني قضيت حقك؛
It is said: At whatever hour you came to me, you fulfilled your right;
وأبنت للأشهاد حزة أدعي
And I made clear to the witnesses the hour of my claim.
أبنت لهم قولي حين ادعيت إلى قومي فقلت: أنا فلان بن فلان
I made clear to them my saying when I claimed lineage to my people and said: I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so.
هو حزاز يأخذ على رأس الفؤاد يكره على غب تخمة.

الحز الزيادة على الشرف؛
Al-Hazz is the increase beyond honor;
يقال: ليس في القبيل أحد يحز على كرم فلان أي يزيد عليه.
It is said: There is no one in the tribe who adds to the generosity of so-and-so, meaning increases upon it.
المحازة الاستقصاء، تقول: بيننا حزاز شديد أي استقصاء،
Al-Mahazah is thoroughness, you say: Between us is intense scrutiny, meaning thoroughness,
وبينهما شركة حزاز إذا كان كل واحد منهما لا يثق بصاحبه.
And between them is a suspicious partnership if each one does not trust his companion.
والحزحزة: من فعل الرئيس في الحرب عند تعبية الصفوف، وهو أن يقدم هذا ويؤخر هذا؛
And Al-Hazzahzah: is from the action of the leader in war when arranging the ranks, which is to advance this one and delay that one;
يقال: هم في حزاحز من أمرهم؛
It is said: They are in a difficult situation regarding their affair;
والموحف: المنزل بعينه، وذلك أن البعير الذي به النحاز يترك في مناخه لا يثار حتى يبرأ أو يموت.
And Al-Mawhaf: is the very place of rest, and that is because the camel with the wound is left in its resting place and is not disturbed until it heals or dies.
حزت حازة من كوعها؛
I have taken a portion from her elbow;
يضرب عند اشتغال القوم، يقول: فالقوم مشغولون بأمورهم عن غيرها أي فالحازة قد شغلها ما هي فيه عن غيرها.
It is said when people are busy, meaning: The people are occupied with their affairs and not with others, meaning Al-Hazzah has occupied her with what she is in, to the exclusion of others.
تحزحز عن الشيء: تنحى.
He moved away from the thing: he withdrew.
والحز: موضع بالسراة.
And Al-Hazz: a place in the Sarawat mountains.
وحزاز: اسم.
And Hazzaz: a name.
وأبو الحزاز: كنية أربد أخي لبيد الذي يقول فيه:
And Abu Al-Hazzaz: is the kunya of Arbad, the brother of Labid, about whom he says:
فأخي إن شربوا من خيرهم ... وأبو الحزاز من أهل ملك
For my brother, if they drink, is from their best... And Abu Al-Hazzaz is from the people of Milk.
