For al-jarz is for the land to have no vegetation; it is said: the land has become barren, so it is majrūzah, locusts, sheep, camels, and the like have made it barren.

أن رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، بينا هو يسير إذ أتى على أرض جرز مجدبة مثل الأيم التي لا نبات بها

That the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, while he was walking, came upon a barren, desolate land like a barren pasture with no vegetation.

لتوجدن جرزا لا يبقى عليها من الحيوان أحد

You will surely find a barren land upon which no animal remains.

And it came in the interpretation of the barren land that it is the land of Yemen. So whoever says al-jarz, it is a softening of al-jarz, and whoever says al-jarz and al-jarz, they are two dialects. And it is permissible for jarz to be a masdar described by it, as if it is a land with jarz, meaning with a devouring of vegetation.

وأجرز القوم: وقعوا في أرض جرز

And the people ajrazū: they fell into barren land.

أرض جرز لا نبات بها كأنه انقطع عنها أو انقطع عنها المطر، وفيها أربع لغات: جرز وجرز مثل عسر وعسر، وجرز وجرز مثل نهر ونهر

A land of jarz with no vegetation, as if it has been cut off from it or the rain has been cut off from it, and it has four pronunciations: jarz and jarz like 'usr and 'usr, and jarz and jarz like nahr and nahr.

وأرض جارزة: يابسة غليظة يكتنفها رمل أو قاع، والجمع جوارز، وأكثر ما يستعمل في جزائر البحر

And a land is jārizah: dry, rough, surrounded by sand or plains, and the plural is jawāriz, and it is most often used for islands.

وامرأة جارز: عاقر

And a woman is jāriz: barren.

والجرزة: الهلاك

And al-jarzah: destruction.

ويقال: رماه الله بشرزة وجرزة، يريد به الهلاك

And it is said: May Allah strike him with a sharp blow and destruction, meaning destruction.

وأجرزت الناقة، فهي مجرز إذا هزلت

And the she-camel ajrazat, so she is mujraz if she has become emaciated.

كل علنداة جراز للشجر إنما عنى به ناقة شبهها بالجراز من السيوف أي أنها تفعل في الشجر فعل السيوف فيها

والرغامى: زيادة الكبد، وأراد بها الرئة ومنها يهيج السعال

And it is said: So-and-so has folded his layers if he became sluggish.
