يُقَالُ: مَا تَحْتَهُ وَثَرٌ وَوِثَارٌ، وَشَيْءٌ وَثِرٌ وَوَثَرٌ وَوَثِيرٌ، وَالْاِسْمُ الْوِثَارُ وَالْوِثَارُ.
It is said: what is beneath it is soft bedding and softness, and something is soft, and soft bedding, and soft, and the noun is softness and softness.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ لِعُمَرَ: لَوِ اتَّخَذْتَ فِرَاشًا أَوْثَرَ مِنْهُ أَيْ أَوْطَأَ وَأَلْيَنَ.
And in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, he said to Umar: If you had taken a bed softer than this, meaning more trodden and more pliable.
وَامْرَأَةٌ وَثِيرَةُ الْعَجِيزَةِ: وَطِيئَتُهَا، وَالْجَمْعُ وَثَائِرُ وَوِثَارٌ.
And a woman with soft hindquarters: her softness, and the plural is soft-hipped ones and softness.
وَقَالَ ابْنُ دُرَيْدٍ: الْوَثِيرَةُ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ الْكَثِيرَةُ اللَّحْمِ، وَالْجَمْعُ كَالْجَمْعِ.
And Ibn Duraid said: The soft one among women is the fleshy one, and the plural is like the plural.
أَبُو زَيْدٍ: الْوَثَارَةُ كَثْرَةُ الشَّحْمِ، وَالْوَثَاجَةُ كَثْرَةُ اللَّحْمِ؛ قَالَ الْقُطَامِيُّ: وَكَأَنَّمَا اشْتَمَلَ الضَّجِيعُ بِرِيطَةً ... لَا بَلْ تَزِيدُ وَثَارَةٌ وَلَيَانًا
Abu Zayd: Abundance of fat, and abundance of flesh; Al-Qutami said: As if the sleeper embraced a fine cloth... Nay, but abundance and pliancy increase.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَعُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ حِصْنٍ: مَا أَخَذْتُهَا بَيْضَاءَ غَرِيرَةً وَلَا نِصْفًا وَثِيرَةً.
And in the hadith of Ibn Umar and Uyaynah bin Hisn: I did not take her as a young, innocent white one, nor as a soft half-grown one.
وَالْمِيثَرَةُ: الثَّوْبُ الَّذِي تُجَلِّلُ بِهِ الثِّيَابَ فَيَعْلُوهَا.
And the mitharah: the garment with which clothes are covered, and it lies over them.
وَالْمِيثَرَةُ: هِنَةٌ كَهَيْئَةِ الْمِرْفَقَةِ تُتَّخَذُ لِلسَّرْجِ كَ الصِّفَةِ، وَهِيَ الْمَآثِرُ وَالْمَيَاثِرُ، الْأَخِيرَةُ عَلَى الْمُعَاقَبَةِ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ جِنِّي: لَزِمَ الْبَدَلُ فِيهِ كَمَا لَزِمَ فِي عِيدٍ وَأَعْيَادٍ.
And the mitharah: something like a cushion, made for the saddle like a covering, and it is the ma'athir and the mayathir, the latter on the pattern of 'mu'aqabah', and Ibn Jinni said: The substitution is fixed in it as it is fixed in 'eid and 'a'yad.
التَّهْذِيبُ: وَالْمِيثَرَةُ مِيثَرَةُ السَّرْجِ وَالرَّحْلِ يُوطَأَنِ بِهَا، وَمِيثَرَةُ الْفَرَسِ: لِبْدَتُهُ، غَيْرُ مَهْمُوزٍ.
Al-Tahdhib: And the mitharah is the padding of the saddle and the pack that are trodden upon, and the mitharah of the horse: its felt, not hamzated.
قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ: وَأَمَّا الْمَيَاثِرُ الْحُمْرُ الَّتِي جَاءَ فِيهَا النَّهْيُ فَإِنَّهَا كَانَتْ مِنْ مَرَاكِبِ الْأَعَاجِمِ مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أَوْ حَرِيرٍ.
Abu Ubaid said: As for the red mayathir about which the prohibition came, they were from the mounts of the non-Arabs, made of brocade or silk.
وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ: أَنَّهُ نَهَى عَنْ مِيثَرَةِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ؛ هِيَ وِطَاءٌ مَحْشُوٌّ يُتْرَكُ عَلَى رَحْلِ الْبَعِيرِ تَحْتَ الرَّاكِبِ.
And in the hadith: That he prohibited the purple mitharah; it is a stuffed padding left on the camel's pack under the rider.
وَالْوَاطِرُ: الَّذِي يَأْثِرُ أَسْفَلَ خُفِّ الْبَعِيرِ، وَأَرَى الْوَاوَ فِيهِ بَدَلًا مِنَ الْهَمْزَةِ فِي الْآثِرِ.
And the wathir: the one who treads upon the lower part of the camel's hoof, and I think the waw in it is a substitute for the hamza in al-aathir.
وَالْوَتَرُ، بِالْفَتْحِ: مَاءُ الْفَحْلِ يَجْتَمِعُ فِي رَحِمِ النَّاقَةِ ثُمَّ لَا تُلْقَحُ؛ وَوَثَرَهَا الْفَحْلُ يَثِرُهَا وَثْرًا: أَكْثَرَ ضِرَابَهَا فَلَمْ تُلْقَحْ.
And al-wathr, with fatha: the stallion's fluid that collects in the mare's womb and then she does not conceive; and the stallion served her, serving her repeatedly, increasing its copulation, and she did not conceive.
أَبُو زَيْدٍ: الْمَسْطُ أَنْ يُدْخِلَ الرَّجُلُ الْيَدَ فِي الرَّحِمِ رَحِمِ النَّاقَةِ بَعْدَ ضِرَابِ الْفَحْلِ إِيَّاهَا فَيَسْتَخْرِجَ وَثَرَهَا، وَهُوَ مَاءُ الْفَحْلِ يَجْتَمِعُ فِي رَحِمِهَا ثُمَّ لَا تُلْقَحُ مِنْهُ؛ وَقَالَ النَّضْرُ: الْوَتَرُ أَنْ يَضْرِبَهَا عَلَى غَيْرِ ضَبْعَةٍ.
Abu Zayd: Al-mast is for a man to insert his hand into the womb of the mare after the stallion has served her, and extract her wathr, which is the stallion's fluid that collects in her womb and then she does not conceive from it; and Al-Nadr said: Al-wathr is to serve her without a specific time.
قَالَ: وَالْمَوْثُورَةُ تُضْرَبُ فِي الْيَوْمِ الْوَاحِدِ مِرَارًا فَلَا تُلْقَحُ.
He said: And the mawthurah is served multiple times in a single day and does not conceive.
وَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْعَرَبِ: أَعْجَبُ النِّكَاحِ وَثَرٌ عَلَى وَثَرٍ أَيْ نِكَاحٌ عَلَى فِرَاشٍ وَثِيرٍ.
And some of the Arabs said: The most admirable mating is wathr upon wathr, meaning mating upon a soft bed.
وَاسْتَوْثَرْتُ مِنَ الشَّيْءِ أَيْ اِسْتَكْثَرْتُ مِنْهُ، مِثْلُ اِسْتَوْثَنْتُ وَاِسْتَوْثَجْتُ.
And I sought abundance of the thing, meaning I sought much of it, like seeking abundance and seeking muchness.
ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ: التَّوَاوِيرُ الشَّرْطُ، وَهُمُ الْعَتَلَةُ وَالْفَرْعَةُ وَالْأَمَلَةُ، وَاحِدُهُمْ آمِلٌ مِثْلُ كَافِرٍ وَكَفَرَةٍ.
Ibn Al-A'rabi: Al-tawawir are the conditions, and they are the strong ones, the prominent ones, and the hopeful ones, their singular is aamil like kafir and kafarah.
ابْنُ سِيدَهْ: وَالْوَثَرُ جِلْدٌ يُقَدُّ سُيُورًا عَرْضُ السَّيْرِ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعُ أَصَابِعَ أَوْ شِبْرٌ تَلْبَسُهُ الْجَارِيَةُ الصَّغِيرَةُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُدْرِكَ؛ عَنِ ابْنِ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ؛ وَأَنْشَدَ: عَلَّقْتُهَا وَهِيَ عَلَيْهَا وَثَرٌ ... حَتَّى إِذَا مَا جُعِلَتْ فِي الْخِدْرِ وَأَتْلَعَتْ بِمِثْلِ جِيدِ الْوَبَرِ
Ibn Sideh: And al-wathr is a skin cut into straps, the width of the strap being four fingers or a span, which a young girl wears before puberty; from Ibn Al-A'rabi; and he recited: I hung it on her, and she had a wathr on her... until she was placed in the tent, and she showed a neck like that of the hyrax.
وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: وَتَلْبَسُهُ أَيْضًا وَهِيَ حَائِضٌ، وَقِيلَ، الْوَثَرُ النِّقْبَةُ الَّتِي تُلْبَسُ، وَالْمَعْنَيَانِ مُتَقَارِبَانِ، قَالَ: وَهُوَ الرِّيطُ أَيْضًا.
And he said another time: And she wears it also while she is menstruating, and it is said, al-wathr is the covering that is worn, and the two meanings are close, he said: And it is also a fine cloth.
