يقال: نرت الثوب وأنرته ونيرته إذا جعلت له علما.
It is said: I marked the garment, and I made it marked, and I marked it, if you made a mark for it.
وروي عن ابن عمر، رضي الله عنهما، أنه قال: لولا أن عمر نهى عن النير لم نر بالعلم بأسا ولكنه نهى عن النير ، والاسم النيرة، وهي الخيوطة والقصبة إذا اجتمعنا، فإذا تفرقنا سميت الخيوطة خيوطة والقصبة قصبة وإن كانت عصا فعصا، وعلم الثوب نير، والجمع أنيار.
And it was narrated from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them: that he said: If Umar had not forbidden al-Nair, we would not see any harm in the mark, but he forbade al-Nair, and the name is al-Nairah, and it is the thread and the reed when they are gathered; when they separate, the thread is called a thread and the reed is called a reed, even if it is a stick, it is a stick, and the mark of the garment is Nair, and the plural is aniyar.
ونيرت الثوب تنييرا، والاسم النير، ويقال للحمة الثوب نير.
And I marked the garment with tanyir, and the name is al-Nair, and the weft of the garment is called Nair.
وثوب منير: منسوج على نيرين؛ عن اللحياني.
And a marked garment: woven on two threads; according to Al-Lihyani.
فقمت بها تمشي تجر وراءنا ... على أثرينا نير مرط مرجل
So I stood with her, walking, dragging behind us... on our tracks, the mark of a flowing garment.
والنيرة أيضا: من أدوات النساج ينسج بها، وهي الخشبة المعترضة.
And al-Nairah also: one of the weaver's tools with which he weaves, and it is the crossbeam.
فما تأتوا يكن حسنا جميلا، ... وما تسدوا لمكرمة تنيروا
So whatever you do will not be good and beautiful, and you do not fulfill any noble deed that you mark.
ألم تسأل الأحلاف كيف تبدلوا ... بأمر أناروه، جميعا، وألحموا؟
Have you not asked the allies how they changed... by a matter they marked, all of them, and they joined?
والطرة من الطريق تسمى النير تشبيها بنير الثوب، وهو العلم في الحاشية؛
And the edge of the road is called al-Nair by analogy with the mark of the garment, which is the sign on the hem;
على ظهر ذي نيرين: أما جنابه ... فوعث، وأما ظهره فموعس
On the back of the one with two marks: as for its side... it is rough, and as for its back, it is smooth.
فلاة ذات نيرين ... بمرو، سمحها رنه

يقال: ناقة ذات نيرين إذا حملت شحما على شحم كان قبل ذلك،

ورجل ذو نيرين أي قوته وشدته ضعف شدة صاحبه.

The crossbeam on the necks of two yoked oxen for plowing is called Nair, and it is the yoke of the plow,
ويقال للحرب الشديدة: ذات نيرين؛
And a severe war is called: ذات نيرين (having two marks/intensities);
عدا عن سليمى أنني كل شارق ... أهز، لحرب ذات نيرين، ألتي
He moved away from Sulayma, that I every morning... I shake, for a war of two intensities, the one.

وقال الليث: النائرة الكائنة تقع بين القوم.
And Al-Layth said: Al-Na'irah is the event that occurs between a group of people.
أقبلن، من نير ومن سواج، ... بالقوم قد ملوا من الإدلاج
They came, from Nair and from Sawaj, ... with the people who were tired of traveling.
أبو بردة بن نيار: رجل من قضاعة من الصحابة، واسمه هانئ.
