هو الذي يبصر بنوره ذو العماية ويرشد بهداه ذو الغواية
He is the one by whose light the blind see and by whose guidance the misguided are led.
الله نور السماوات والأرض
God is the Light of the heavens and the earth.
مثل نوره كمشكاة فيها مصباح ؛ أي مثل نور هداه في قلب المؤمن كمشكاة فيها مصباح
His light is like a niche with a lamp in it; meaning the likeness of the light of His guidance in the heart of the believer is like a niche with a lamp in it.
والنور: الضياء
And light: the radiance.
والنور: ضد الظلمة
And light: the opposite of darkness.
والنور الضوء، أيا كان، وقيل: هو شعاعه وسطوعه
And light is the radiance, whatever it may be, and it was said: it is its rays and its brightness.
وقد نار نورا وأنار واستنار ونور؛ الأخيرة عن اللحياني، بمعنى واحد، أي أضاء
And it became luminous with luminosity, and it illuminated, and it became illuminated, and it illuminated; the last is from Al-Lihyani, meaning one thing, i.e., it shone.
واستنار به: استمد شعاعه
And he sought radiance from it: he drew from its rays.
وحتى يبيت القوم في الصيف ليلة ... يقولون: نور صبح، والليل عاتم
And until the people spend a night in summer... they say: the morning has dawned, and the night is dark.
فرض عمر بن الخطاب، رضي الله عنه، للجد ثم أنارها زيد بن ثابت أي نورها وأوضحها وبينها
Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, decreed for the grandfather, then Zayd ibn Thabit illuminated it, meaning he lit it up, clarified it, and made it evident.
والتنوير: وقت إسفار الصبح؛ يقال: قد نور الصبح تنويرا
And the dawning: the time of the breaking of the dawn; it is said: the morning has dawned with dawning.
والتنوير: الإنارة
And the dawning: the illumination.
والتنوير: الإسفار
And the dawning: the breaking of the dawn.
أنه نور بالفجر أي صلاها، وقد استنار الأفق كثيرا
That he prayed the dawn prayer, meaning he prayed it, and the horizon had become very bright.
نائرات الأحكام ومنيرات الإسلام ؛ النائرات الواضحات البينات، والمنيرات كذلك
Illuminating judgments and clarifying Islam; the illuminating ones are the clear, evident ones, and the clarifying ones are likewise.
وأنار المكان: وضع فيه النور
And he lit up the place: he put light in it.
ومن لم يجعل الله له نورا فما له من نور ؛ معناه من لم يهده الله للإسلام لم يهتد
And whoever God has not made for him a light, then he has no light; meaning whoever God has not guided to Islam, he has not been guided.
والمنار والمنارة: موضع النور
And the beacon and the lampstand: the place of light.
والمنارة: الشمعة ذات السراج
And the lampstand: the candle with a lamp.
وكلاهما في كفه يزنية، ... فيها سنان كالمنارة أصلع
And both are in his hand, a Yemeni spearhead, ... in it a spearhead like a smooth lampstand.
والمنار: العلم وما يوضع بين الشيئين من الحدود
And the landmark: the sign and what is placed between two things as boundaries.
لعن الله من غير منار الأرض أي أعلامها
May God curse him who changes the landmarks of the land, meaning its signs.
والمنار: علم الطريق
And the landmark: the sign of the road.
والمنار العلم والحد بين الأرضين
And the landmark is the sign and the boundary between lands.
والمنار: جمع منارة، وهي العلامة تجعل بين الحدين
And the landmark: a plural of minara, which is the sign placed between the two boundaries.
منار الحرم: أعلامه التي ضربها إبراهيم الخليل، على نبينا وعليه الصلاة والسلام، على أقطار الحرم ونواحيه وبها تعرف حدود الحرم من حدود الحل
The landmarks of the Sanctuary: its signs that Abraham the Friend, peace be upon him and our Prophet, set up on the peripheries and sides of the Sanctuary, by which the boundaries of the Sanctuary are known from the boundaries of the permissible area.
أراد به منار الحرم، ويجوز أن يكون لعن من تخوم الأرضين، وهو أن يقتطع طائفة من أرض جاره أو يحول الحد من مكانه
He meant by it the landmarks of the Sanctuary, and it is permissible that he cursed those who alter the boundaries of lands, which is to carve off a portion of his neighbor's land or to move the boundary from its place.
المنار العلم يجعل للطريق أو الحد للأرضين من طين أو تراب
The landmark is the sign made for the road or the boundary for lands, of clay or earth.
إن للإسلام صوى ومنارا أي علامات وشرائع يعرف بها
Indeed, Islam has pillars and landmarks, meaning signs and laws by which it is known.
والمنارة: التي يؤذن عليها، وهي المئذنة
And the minaret: that upon which the call to prayer is made, and it is the minaret.
لعك في مناسمها منار، ... إلى عدنان، واضحة السبيل
And for 'Akk in their pastures is a beacon, ... to Adnan, a clear path.
والمنار: محجة الطريق
And the beacon: the main road.
قد جاءكم من الله نور وكتاب مبين ؛ قيل: النور هاهنا هو سيدنا محمد رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أي جاءكم نبي وكتاب
There has come to you from God a light and a clear Book; it was said: the Light here is our master Muhammad, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, meaning a prophet and a book has come to you.
سيأتيكم النور
The light will come to you.
واتبعوا النور الذي أنزل معه ؛ أي اتبعوا الحق الذي بيانه في القلوب كبيان النور في العيون
And follow the light which was sent down with it; meaning follow the truth whose clarity in the hearts is like the clarity of light in the eyes.
يهدي الله لنوره من يشاء ، يهدي به الله من اتبع رضوانه
God guides to His light whom He wills, and God guides by it whoever follows His pleasure.
نور أنى أراه أي هو نور كيف أراه
Light, how can I see Him? meaning He is Light, how can I see Him?
اللهم اجعل في قلبي نورا وباقي أعضائه ؛ أراد ضياء الحق وبيانه، كأنه قال: اللهم استعمل هذه الأعضاء مني في الحق واجعل تصرفي وتقلبي فيها على سبيل الصواب والخير
O God, make in my heart a light and in the rest of my limbs; he meant the radiance of truth and its clarity, as if he said: O God, employ these limbs of mine in truth and make my actions and my movements in them upon the path of correctness and goodness.
لا تستضيئوا بنار المشركين ، فقال: النار هاهنا الرأي، أي لا تشاوروهم
Do not seek light from the fire of the polytheists, so he said: the fire here means opinion, meaning do not consult them.
لا تراءى ناراهما أي لا يجتمعان بحيث تكون نار أحدهما تقابل نار الآخر
Their fires should not face each other, meaning they should not meet such that the fire of one faces the fire of the other.
أنور المتجرد أي نير الجسم
The radiant one stripped bare, meaning of luminous body.
يقال للحسن المشرق اللون: أنور، وهو أفعل من النور
The one with a bright complexion is called 'anwar', and it is an 'af'al' form from 'nur'.
يقال: نار فهو نير، وأنار فهو منير
It is said: it became luminous, so it is luminous, and it illuminated, so it is illuminating.
والنار: معروفة أنثى، وهي من الواو لأن تصغيرها نويرة
And fire: it is known to be feminine, and it is from 'waw' because its diminutive is 'nuwayrah'.
أن بورك من في النار ومن حولها ؛ قال الزجاج: جاء في التفسير أن من في النار هنا نور الله عز وجل، ومن حولها قيل الملائكة وقيل نور الله أيضا
Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it; Al-Zajjaj said: it came in interpretation that whoever is in the fire here is the light of God, the Almighty, and whoever is around it, it was said the angels, and it was also said the light of God.
فمن يأتنا يلمم بنا في ديارنا، ... يجد أثرا دعسا ونارا تأججا
So whoever comes to us and visits us in our homes, ... will find a deep trace and a blazing fire.
يجد حطبا جزلا ونارا تأججا
Will find abundant firewood and a blazing fire.
والجمع أنور «3» ونيران، انقلبت الواو ياء لكسرة ما قبلها، ونيرة ونور ونيار؛ الأخيرة عن أبي حنيفة
And the plural is anwar and niran, the waw turned into ya due to the kasra before it, and nayrah, nur, and niyar; the last is from Abu Hanifa.
فتعلوهم نار الأنيار ؛ قال ابن الأثير: لم أجده مشروحا ولكن هكذا روي فإن صحت الرواية فيحتمل أن يكون معناه نار النيران بجمع النار على أنيار، وأصلها أنوار لأنها من الواو كما جاء في ريح وعيد أرياح وأعياد، وهما من الواو
Then the fire of fires will rise over them; Ibn Al-Athir said: I did not find it explained, but it is narrated thus, and if the narration is correct, it is possible that its meaning is the fire of fires, by pluralizing 'nar' into 'aniyar', and its origin is 'anwar' because it is from 'waw' as in 'reeh' and 'wa'eed' (winds and threats), their plurals are 'aryah' and 'a'yad', and they are from 'waw'.
وتنور النار: نظر إليها أو أتاها
And to look at the fire: to look at it or approach it.
وتنور الرجل: نظر إليه عند النار من حيث لا يراه
And for a man to look at the fire: to look at him by the fire from where he cannot see him.
وتنورت النار من بعيد أي تبصرتها
And to perceive the fire from afar, meaning to see it.
الناس شركاء في ثلاثة: الماء والكلأ والنار ؛ أراد ليس لصاحب النار أن يمنع من أراد أن يستضيء منها أو يقتبس، وقيل: أراد بالنار الحجارة التي توري النار، أي لا يمنع أحد أن يأخذ منها
People are partners in three: water, pasture, and fire; he meant that the owner of the fire is not to prevent anyone who wants to seek light from it or to take a spark, and it was said: he meant by fire the stones from which fire is kindled, meaning no one is to be prevented from taking from them.
وما كان أسفل من ذلك فهو في النار ؛ معناه أن ما دون الكعبين من قدم صاحب الإزار المسبل في النار عقوبة له على فعله
And whatever is below that is in the fire; meaning that what is below the ankles of the foot of the one who wears his garment trailing is in the fire as a punishment for his action.
آخركم يموت في النار ؛ قال ابن الأثير: فكان لا يكاد يدفأ فأمر بقدر عظيمة فملئت ماء وأوقد تحتها واتخذ فوقها مجلسا، وكان يصعد بخارها فيدفئه، فبينا هو كذلك خسفت به فحصل في النار، قال: فذلك الذي قال له، والله أعلم
The last of you will die in the fire; Ibn Al-Athir said: he could hardly get warm, so he ordered a large pot to be filled with water and a fire to be lit under it, and a seat was made above it, and its steam would rise and warm him. While he was thus, the ground swallowed him up and he ended up in the fire, he said: that is what was said to him, and God knows best.
العجماء جبار والنار جبار ؛ قيل: هي النار التي يوقدها الرجل في ملكه فتطيرها الريح إلى مال غيره فيحترق ولا يملك ردها فيكون هدرا
The speechless animal is a hazard, and fire is a hazard; it was said: it is the fire that a man lights on his property which the wind carries to the property of another, and it burns, and he cannot prevent it, so it is considered a loss.
فإن تحت البحر نارا وتحت النار بحرا ؛ قال ابن الأثير: هذا تفخيم لأمر البحر وتعظيم لشأنه وإن الآفة تسرع إلى راكبه في غالب الأمر كما يسرع الهلاك من النار لمن لابسها ودنا منها
For beneath the sea is fire, and beneath the fire is the sea; Ibn Al-Athir said: this is to magnify the matter of the sea and to glorify its importance, and that disaster quickly befalls its rider in most cases, just as destruction quickly befalls whoever deals with fire and approaches it.
والنار: السمة، والجمع كالجمع، وهي النورة
And the brand: the mark, and the plural is like the plural, and it is the 'nura'.
ونرت البعير: جعلت عليه نارا
And I branded the camel: I put a brand on it.
وما به نورة أي ما سمتها
And he has no brand, meaning no mark.
والعرب تقول: ما نار هذه الناقة أي ما سمتها، سميت نارا لأنها بالنار توسم؛ وقال الراجز: حتى سقوا أبالهم بالنار، ... والنار قد تشفي من الأوار أي سقوا إبلهم بالسمة، أي إذا نظروا في سمة صاحبه عرف صاحبه فسقي وقدم على غيره لشرف أرباب تلك السمة وخلوا لها الماء
And the Arabs say: what is the brand of this she-camel, meaning what is its mark? It is called a brand because it is branded with fire; and the poet said: until they watered their camels with the brand, ... and the brand can heal from thirst, meaning they watered their camels with the mark, meaning if they looked at the mark of its owner, they knew its owner and watered it and gave it precedence over others due to the honor of the owners of that mark, and they left water for it.
ونجارها نارها أي سمتها تدل على نجارها يعني الإبل؛ قال الراجز يصف إبلا سمتها مختلفة: نجار كل إبل نجارها، ... ونار إبل العالمين نارها يقول: اختلفت سماتها لأن أربابها من قبائل شتى فأغير على سرح كل قبيلة واجتمعت عند من أغار عليها سمات تلك القبائل كلها
And its brand is its mark, meaning its mark indicates its owner, meaning the camels; the poet said, describing camels with different marks: The owner of every camel is its owner, ... And the brand of the camels of the world is its brand. He says: their marks differed because their owners were from various tribes, so the property of each tribe was raided and the marks of all those tribes gathered with the one who raided them.
وما ناراهما أي ما سمتهما التي وسمتا بها يعني ناقتيه الضالتين، والسمة: العلامة
And their brands, meaning their marks with which they were branded, meaning the two lost she-camels, and the mark: the sign.
