النَّحْبُ، وَهُوَ مَا يُنْذِرُهُ الْإِنْسَانُ فَيَجْعَلُهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ نَحْبًا وَاجِبًا
The pledge, which is what a person vows and makes obligatory upon himself.
وَجَمْعُهُ نُذُورٌ
And its plural is nudhur (vows).
وَالشَّافِعِيُّ سَمَّى فِي كِتَابِ جِرَاحِ الْعَمْدِ مَا يَجِبُ فِي الْجِرَاحَاتِ مِنَ الدِّيَاتِ نَذَرًا
And Al-Shafi'i named in the book of intentional wounds what is due in wounds from blood money as a 'nadhra' (vow/obligation).
وَأَهْلُ الْعِرَاقِ يُسَمُّونَهُ الْأَرْشَ
And the people of Iraq call it al-arsh (compensation).
إِنَّمَا قِيلَ لَهُ نَذْرٌ لِأَنَّهُ نُذِرَ فِيهِ أَيْ أُوجِبَ، مِنْ قَوْلِكَ نَذَرْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي أَيْ أَوْجَبْتُ
It was only called a 'nadhra' because it was vowed in it, meaning obligated, from your saying 'I vowed upon myself', meaning 'I obligated'.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ: أَنَّ عُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَضَيَا فِي الْمِلْطَاةِ بِنِصْفِ نَذْرِ الْمُوضِحَةِ أَيْ بِنِصْفِ مَا يَجِبُ فِيهَا مِنَ الْأَرْشِ وَالْقِيمَةِ
And in the narration of Ibn al-Musayyab: That Umar and Uthman, may God be pleased with them, ruled in the 'miltaqah' (a type of wound) with half the 'nadhra' of the 'muwaddihah' (another type of wound), meaning half of what is due in it from compensation and value.

وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ ذِكْرُ النَّذْرِ مُكَرَّرًا
And the word 'nadhra' (vow) is mentioned repeatedly in the hadith.
لَا تَنْذِرُوا عَلَى أَنَّكُمْ تُدْرِكُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ شَيْئًا لَمْ يُقَدِّرْهُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ أَوْ تَصْرِفُونَ بِهِ عَنْكُمْ مَا جَرَى بِهِ الْقَضَاءُ عَلَيْكُمْ
Do not make vows on the assumption that you will achieve by the vow something that God has not decreed for you, or that you will avert by it what has been decreed upon you.

And warn him of the matter, a warning and a vow.
وَأَنْذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ الْآزِفَةِ

And the vanguard of the army: their vanguard that warns them of the enemy's affairs, i.e., informs them.
وَالْإِنْذَارُ: الْإِبْلَاغُ، وَلَا يَكُونُ إِلَّا فِي التَّخْوِيفِ، وَالِاسْمُ النَّذَرُ
And al-indhar: the conveying (of information), and it only occurs in the context of frightening; and the noun is al-nadhar.
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Then how was My punishment and My warning?
وَجَاءَكُمُ النَّذِيرُ
And the warner has come to you.
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا
Indeed, We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
فَأَتَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، الصَّفَا فَصَعِدَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ نَادَى: يَا صَبَاحَاهْ فَاِجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ
So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Al-Safa, ascended it, and then called out: 'O morning!' So people gathered to him.
So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'O sons of Abdul Muttalib, O sons of so-and-so, if I told you that cavalry were coming to conquer this mountain intending to raid you, would you believe me?' They said: 'Yes.'
قَالَ: فَإِنِّي نَذِيرٌ لَكُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ
He said: 'Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment.'
وَأَنْذَرْتُ الْقَوْمَ سَيْرَ الْعَدُوِّ إِلَيْهِمْ فَنَذِرُوا أَيْ أَعْلَمْتُهُمْ ذَلِكَ فَعَلِمُوا وَتَحَرَّزُوا
And I warned the people of the enemy's march towards them, so they became aware, meaning I informed them of that, so they knew and took precautions.
