مضر اللبن يمضر مضورا: حمض وابيض، وكذلك النبيذ إذا حمض.
Milk sours, it becomes sour and white, and so does wine when it ferments.
ومضر اللبن أي صار ماضرا، وهو الذي يحذي اللسان قبل أن يروب.
And 'madr al-laban' means the milk became sour, which is what pricks the tongue before it curdles.
ولبن مضير: حامض شديد الحموضة؛
And 'labanun madir': sour milk, intensely sour;
يقال إن مضر كان مولعا بشربه فسمي مضر به
It is said that Mudar was fond of drinking it, so Mudar was named after it
المضيرة: مريقة تطبخ بلبن وأشياء، وقيل: هي طبيخ يتخذ من اللبن الماضر.
Al-madirah: a broth cooked with milk and other things, and it is said: it is a dish made from sour milk.
أن تطبخ اللحم باللبن البحت الصريح الذي قد حذى اللسان حتى ينضج اللحم وتخثر المضيرة.
To cook meat with pure, unadulterated milk that has pricked the tongue until the meat is cooked and the 'madirah' thickens.
ويقال: فلان يتمضر أي يتعصب لمضر
And it is said: So-and-so 'yatamaddaru' means he is zealous for Mudar
لا تسبوا مضر ولا ربيعة فإنهما كانا مؤمنين.
Do not revile Mudar or Rabi'ah, for they were both believers.
وقيل لمضر الحمراء ولربيعة الفرس لأنهما لما اقتسما الميراث أعطي مضر الذهب، وهو يؤنث، وأعطي ربيعة الخيل.
Mudar was called 'the red' and Rabi'ah 'the horseman' because when they divided the inheritance, Mudar was given gold (and it is feminine), and Rabi'ah was given horses.
محمرة مصفرة فكأنها ... عصب، تيمن في الوغى وتمضر
Reddish-yellow, as if they were... banners, Yemenites in battle and Mudarites.
ولبن مضر، قال ابن سيده: وأراه على النسب كمضر وطعم لأن فعله إنما هو مضر، بفتح الضاد لا كسرها
And 'laban Mudar', Ibn Sidah said: I think it is by way of attribution like Mudar and taste, because its verb is 'madara', with a fatha on the dhal, not a kasra
ومضارة اللبن: ما سال منه.
And 'madarat al-laban': what flows out of it.
والماضر: اللبن الذي يحذي اللسان قبل أن يدرك، وقد مضر يمضر مضورا، وكذلك النبيذ.
And 'al-madir': the milk that pricks the tongue before it matures, and it has soured ('madara yamduru maduran'), and likewise wine.
يقاتل معها مضر، مضرها الله في النار ، أي جعلها في النار
Mudar will fight with her; may God destroy her in Hell, meaning may He make her enter Hell
يقال: مضرنا فلانا فتمضر أي صيرناه كذلك بأن نسبناه إليها
It is said: We 'madarnahu' so-and-so, and he 'tammadara', meaning we made him so by attributing him to it
مضرها أهلكها، من قولهم: ذهب دمه خضرا مضرا أي هدرا
Mudarraha means destroyed her, from their saying: his blood went in vain, 'khadran madran', meaning wasted.
نرى أصله من مضور اللبن وهو قرصه اللسان وحذيه له، وإنما شدد للكثرة والمبالغة.
We think its origin is from the souring of milk, which is its pinching and pricking of the tongue, and the shadda is for abundance and exaggeration.
وفي الحديث: سأله رجل فقال: يا رسول الله، ما لي من ولدي؟ قال: ما قدمت منهم، قال: فمن خلفت بعدي قال: لك منهم ما لمضر من ولده أي أن مضر لا أجر له فيمن مات من ولده اليوم وإنما أجره فيمن مات من ولده قبله.
And in the hadith: A man asked him, 'O Messenger of God, what do I have from my children?' He said: 'What you sent ahead.' He said: 'And whom have I left behind me?' He said: 'You have from them what Mudar has from his children,' meaning that Mudar has no reward for those of his children who died today, but his reward is for those of his children who died before him.
والعرب تقول: مضر الله لك الثناء أي طيبه.
And the Arabs say: 'Maddara Allahu laka al-thana'' meaning may God make your praise good.
وتماضر: اسم امرأة، مشتق من هذه الأشياء؛ قال ابن دريد: أحسبه من اللبن الماضر.
And Tamador: a woman's name, derived from these things; Ibn Duraid said: I think it is from sour milk.
