And al-madrāh, with the fatḥah, is the place from which mud is taken, and with it basins are plastered, meaning the gaps between their stones are sealed.

So he and Jubayr ibn Ṣakhr went and drew a bucket or two from the basin, then they plastered it, meaning they coated it and repaired it with mud, which is the cohesive clay, so that water would not escape from it.

إنما هو مدر أي مصبوغ بالمدر

It is only mud, meaning dyed with mud.

والممدرة والممدرة، الأخيرة نادرة: موضع فيه طين حر يستعد لذلك

And al-mumdarah and al-mumdarah, the latter is rare: a place with pure mud prepared for that purpose.

يقول: قد أتتك عطاشا فلا تنتظر إصلاح الحوض وأن يمتلئ فصب على رؤوسها دلوا دلوا

He says: They have come to you thirsty, so do not wait for the basin to be repaired and filled; rather, pour a bucket after a bucket on their heads.

لا تصبه على مدر وهو القلاع فيذوب ويذهب الماء

Do not pour it on al-madar, which is the crumbling (plaster), so it dissolves and the water is lost.

وبنو مدراء: أهل الحضر

And Banu Madra': the people of settled areas.

لنا الوبر ولكم المدر

We have the tents (made of hair), and you have the mud (settlements).

إنما عنى به المدن أو الحضر لأن مبانيها إنما هي بالمدر، وعنى بالوبر الأخبية لأن أبنية البادية بالوبر

He meant by it cities or settled areas because their buildings are made of mud, and he meant by al-wabr the tents because the structures of the desert dwellers are made of hair.

والمدر: ضخم البطنة

And al-madar: large of belly.

ورجل أمدر: عظيم البطن والجنبين متتربهما، والأنثى مدراء

And a man amdar: large of belly and flanks, their sides covered with dust; and the female is madrā'.

And an amdar hyena: on its belly is a sheen from its excrement.

فإذا هو بضبعان أمدر، فيقول: ما أنت بأبي

And behold, it was an amdar hyena, and he said: Are you not my father?

الأمدر المنتفخ الجنبين العظيم البطن

Al-amdar: the one bloated in the flanks and large of belly.

وقوله أمدر الجنبين أي عظيمهما

And his saying amdar al-janibayn means large of them (the flanks).

ويقال: الأمدر الذي قد تترب جنباه من المدر، يذهب به إلى التراب، أي أصاب جسده التراب

And it is said: Al-amdar is one whose flanks are covered with dust from the mud, referring to the dust, meaning dust has touched his body.

وقال بعضهم الأمدر الكثير الرجيع الذي لا يقدر على حبسه

And some of them said: Al-amdar is one who passes much excrement and cannot hold it in.

المدراء من الضباع التي لصق بها بولها

Al-madra' from the hyenas is one to which its urine has stuck.

ومدرت الضبع إذا سلحت

And the hyena madarat if it defecated.

الأمدر من الضباع الذي في جسده لمع من سلحه ويقال لون له

Al-amdar from the hyenas is one on whose body there is a sheen from its excrement, and it is said to be a color for it.

And al-amdar: the one who defecates in his clothes.

So he defecated in it and plastered his basin with it out of stinginess, so as not to drink from its remainder.

فقضى على بني هلال بعظم الخزي

So he ruled against Banu Hilal with great disgrace.

لقد جللت خزيا هلال بن عامر، بني عامر طرا، بسلحة مادر

Indeed, you have brought great disgrace upon Hilal ibn 'Amir, all of Banu 'Amir, with the excrement of Madir.

ويقال للرجل أمدر وهو الذي لا يمتسح بالماء ولا بالحجر

And a man is called amdar, and he is one who does not cleanse himself with water or stones.

فالحقن واعتكرت لها مدرية، كالسمهرية حدها وتمامها

So they caught up and a madrīyah churned for them, its edge and completeness like a samharīyah (spear).

وثنية مدران: من مساجد رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، بين المدينة وتبوك

And Thuniyat Madran: among the mosques of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, between Medina and Tabuk.

ولا تبقي خمور الأمدرينا

And do not leave the wines of al-Amadrīn.
