ويقال: أقفر فلان من أهله إذا انفرد عنهم وبقي وحده

And it is said: So-and-so became isolated from his family when he separated from them and remained alone.

ويقال: أقفر جسده من اللحم، وأقفر رأسه من الشعر

And it is said: his body became lean from flesh, and his head became bald from hair.

وإنه لقفر الرأس أي لا شعر عليه

And indeed, his head is bald, meaning no hair is on it.

رجل قفر الشعر واللحم قليلهما؛ والأنثى قفرة وقفرة، وكذلك الدابة

A man with little hair and flesh; and the female is qafira and qafira, and so is the animal.

تقول منه: قفرت المرأة، بالكسر، تقفر قفرا، فهي قفرة أي قليلة اللحم

You say from it: the woman became lean (qafirat), with kasra, she becomes lean (taqfaru) qafaran, she is qafira, meaning having little flesh.

وسويق قفار: غير ملتوت

And qifar broth: not twisted.

وخبز قفار: غير مأدوم

And qifar bread: not seasoned.

And the man became desolate: he ate his food without relish.

وفي الحديث: ما أقفر بيت فيه خل أي ما خلا من الأدام ولا عدم أهله الأدم

And in the Hadith: No house with vinegar in it is desolate, meaning it is not empty of relish, nor do its people lack relish.

والقفار، بالفتح: الخبز بلا أدم

And al-qaffaru, with fatha: bread without relish.

والقفار: الطعام بلا أدم

And al-qaffaru: food without relish.

يقال: أكلت اليوم طعاما قفارا إذا أكله غير مأدوم

It is said: I ate qaffaran food today if it was eaten unseasoned.

والقفار والقفير: الطعام إذا كان غير مأدوم

And al-qaffaru and al-qafir: food when it is unseasoned.

وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه: فإني لم آتهم ثلاثة أيام وأحسبهم مقفرين أي خالين من الطعام

And in the narration of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: For I did not come to them for three days and I thought they were destitute, meaning empty of food.

ومننه حديثه الآخر: قال للأعرابي الذي أكل عنده: كأنك مقفر

And from it is his other narration: He said to the Bedouin with whom he ate: It is as if you are destitute.

والقفار: شاعر؛ قال ابن الأعرابي: هو خالد بن عامر أحد بني عميرة بن خفاف بن امرئ القيس، سمي بذلك لأن قوما نزلوا به فأطعمهم الخبز قفارا

And Al-Qaffar: a poet; Ibn Al-A'rabi said: He is Khalid bin 'Amir, one of the Banu 'Umayra bin Khifaf bin Imru' al-Qais, so named because a people descended upon him and he fed them bread qaffaran.

والعرب تقول: نزلنا ببني فلان فبتنا القفر إذا لم يقروا

And the Arabs say: We descended upon the Banu so-and-so and spent the night in desolation (al-qafra) if they did not provide hospitality.

والتقفير: جمعك التراب وغيره

And al-taqfiru: your gathering of dust and other things.

والقفير: الزبيل؛ يمانية

And al-qafiru: the basket; a Yemeni term.

أبو عمرو: القفير القليف والنجوية «2» الجلة العظيمة البحرانية التي يحمل فيها القباب، وهو الكنعد المالح

Abu 'Amr: Al-qafiru is al-qaleef and al-najwiyya, the large Bahraini basket in which the domes are carried, and it is the salted kingfish.

وقفر الأثر يقفره قفرا واقتفره اقتفارا وتقفره، كله: اقتفاه وتتبعه

And qafara the track (yaqfiruhu) qafaran, and iqtafarahu iqtifaran, and taqaffarahu, all of them: to follow it and trace it.

وفي الحديث: أنه سئل عمن يرمي الصيد فيقتفر أثره أي يتبعه

And in the Hadith: He was asked about one who shoots game and then follows its track, meaning he traces it.

يقال: اقتفرت الأثر وتقفرته إذا تتبعته وقفوته

It is said: I followed the track and traced it if you followed it and pursued it.

وفي حديث يحيى بن يعمر: ظهر قبلنا أناس يتقفرون العلم ، ويروى يقتفرون أي يتطلبونه

And in the narration of Yahya bin Ya'mur: People appeared before us who sought knowledge (yataqaffaruna al-'ilm), and it is narrated yataqaffaruna, meaning they seek it.

وكانوا يقتفرون الأثر

And they used to follow the tracks.

فتصبح تقفرها فتية، ... كما يقفر النيب فيها الفصيل

So you become tracing it, young women, ... as the young camel traces the mother camel.

والقفور، مثال التنور: كافور النخل، وفي موضع آخر: وعاء طلع النخل

And al-qufuru, like al-tannuru: the spathe of the palm, and in another place: the sheath of the palm's spathe.

قال الأزهري: وكذلك الكافور الطيب يقال له قفور

Al-Azharī said: Likewise, the fragrant camphor is called qufur.

والقفور: نبت ترعاه القطا؛ قال أبو حنيفة: لم يحل لنا؛ وقد ذكره ابن أحمر فقال: ترعى القطاة البقل قفوره، ... ثم تعر الماء فيمن يعر

And al-qufuru: a plant that the sandgrouse grazes on; Abu Hanifa said: it was not permitted for us; Ibn Ahmar mentioned it, saying: The sandgrouse grazes on its qafur plant, ... then it seeks water among those who seek it.

والقفور شيء من أفاويه الطيب؛ وأنشد: مثواة عطارين بالعطور ... أهضامها والمسك والقفور

And al-qufuru is something from the fragrant spices; and he recited: The dwelling of perfumers with perfumes ... their fragrances, musk, and qufur.

And Qufayra: a woman's name.

قال الأزهري: كأنه تصغير القفرة من النساء، وقد مر تفسيره

Al-Azharī said: It is as if it is a diminutive of qafira from women, and its explanation has passed.
