قال ابن سيده: هذا قول أهل اللغة وتحريره أن القسور والقسورة اسمان للأسد، أنثوه كما قالوا أسامة إلا أن أسامة معرفة.

Ibn Sidah said: This is the statement of the linguists, and its verification is that 'al-qaswar' and 'al-qaswarah' are two names for the lion; they feminized it as they said 'Usamah', except that 'Usamah' is definite.

وقيل في قوله: فرت من قسورة ، قيل: هم الرماة من الصيادين؛ قال الأزهري: أخطأ الليث في غير شيء مما فسر، فمنها قوله: الشرشر الكلب، وإنما الشرشر نبت معروف، قال: وقد رأيته في البادية تسمن الإبل عليه وتغزر، وقد ذكره ابن الأعرابي وغيره في أسماء نبوت البادية؛ وقوله: القسور الصياد خطأ إنما القسور نبت معروف ناعم؛ روى ثعلب عن ابن الأعرابي أنه أنشده لجبيها في صفة معزى بحسن القبول وسرعة السمن على أدنى المرتع: فلو أنها طافت بطنب معجم، ... نفى الرق عنه جدبه، وهو صالح لجاءت كأن القسور الجون بجها ... عساليجه، والثامر المتناوح

And it was said regarding his saying: 'They fled from 'qaswarah'', it was said: they are the archers among the hunters. Al-Azhari said: Al-Layth erred in more than one thing he explained. Among them is his saying: 'Al-sharshar is the dog', but 'al-sharshar' is a known plant. He said: I have seen it in the desert, and camels fatten on it and become more productive. Ibn Al-A'rabi and others mentioned it among the names of desert plants. And his saying: 'Al-qaswar is the hunter' is an error; 'al-qaswar' is a known, tender plant. Tha'lab narrated from Ibn Al-A'rabi that he recited to him from Jubayha in description of goats with good acceptance and rapid fattening on the least pasture: 'If they had grazed on a barren plain... its dryness would be removed from it, and it would be good. They would come as if 'al-qaswar' were their dark-skinned... its shoots, and the fruitful, the mutually supporting'.

قال: وقال الليث القسور الصياد والجمع قسورة، وهو خطأ لا يجمع قسور على قسورة إنما القسورة اسم جامع للرماة، ولا واحد له من لفظه.

He said: And Al-Layth said 'Al-qaswar' is the hunter, and the plural is 'qaswarah', which is an error. 'Qaswar' is not pluralized as 'qaswarah'; rather, 'qaswarah' is a collective noun for archers, and it has no singular form from its root.

ابن الأعرابي: القسورة الرماة والقسورة الأسد والقسورة الشجاع والقسورة أول الليل والقسورة ضرب من الشجر.

Ibn Al-A'rabi: 'Al-qaswarah' means archers, and 'al-qaswarah' means the lion, and 'al-qaswarah' means the brave one, and 'al-qaswarah' means the early part of the night, and 'al-qaswarah' means a type of tree.

الفراء في قوله تعالى: فرت من قسورة ، قال: الرماة، وقال الكلبي بإسناده: هو الأسد.

Al-Farra' regarding the Almighty's saying: 'They fled from 'qaswarah'', said: the archers. And Al-Kalbi, with his chain of narration, said: it is the lion.

وروي عن عكرمة أنه قيل له: القسورة، بلسان الحبشة، الأسد، فقال: القسورة الرماة، والأسد بلسان الحبشة عنبسة، قال: وقال ابن عيينة: كان ابن عباس يقول القسورة نكر الناس، يريد حسهم وأصواتهم.

And it is narrated from Ikrimah that he was asked: 'Al-qaswarah', in the Abyssinian language, means lion. He said: 'Al-qaswarah' means archers, and the lion in the Abyssinian language is 'Anbasah'. He said: And Ibn Uyaynah said: Ibn Abbas used to say 'al-qaswarah' means the multitude of people, meaning their sounds and voices.

وقال ابن عرفة: قسورة فعولة من القسر، فالمعنى كأنهم حمر أنفرها من نفرها برمي أو صيد أو غير ذلك.

And Ibn 'Arifah said: 'Qaswarah' is a pattern of 'fa'ulah' from 'qasr'. So the meaning is as if they are wild asses startled by their flight due to shooting, hunting, or something else.

قال ابن الأثير: وورد القسورة في الحديث، قال: القسورة الرماة من الصيادين، وقيل الأسد، وقيل كل شديد.

Ibn Al-Athir said: And 'al-qaswarah' is mentioned in the Hadith. He said: 'Al-qaswarah' means the archers among the hunters, and it is said the lion, and it is said every strong one.

والقياسر والقياسرة: الإبل العظام؛ قال الشاعر: وعلى القياسر في الخدور كواعب ... رجح الروادف، فالقياسر دلف الواحد: قيسري، وقال الأزهري: لا أدري ما واحدها.

And 'al-qayasar' and 'al-qayasirah': large camels. A poet said: 'And upon the large camels in the chambers, voluptuous maidens... their hips outweighing, so the large camels are slow-moving.' The singular is 'qaysari'. And Al-Azhari said: I do not know its singular.

وقسورة الليل: نصفه الأول، وقيل معظمه؛ قال توبة بن الحمير: وقسورة الليل التي بين نصفه ... وبين العشاء، قد دأبت أسيرها

And 'qaswarat al-layl': its first half, and it is said its greater part. Tawbah ibn Al-Humayr said: 'And the early part of the night, which is between its half... and 'isha', I have persistently traversed it.'

والقسور: ضرب من النبات سهلي، واحدته قسورة.

And 'al-qaswar': a type of lowland plant, its singular is 'qaswarah'.

وقال أبو حنيفة: القسور حمضة من النجيل، وهو مثل جمة الرجل يطول ويعظم والإبل حراص عليه؛ قال جبيها الأشجعي في صفة شاة من المعز: ولو أشليت في ليلة رحبية، ... لأرواقها قطر من الماء سافح لجاءت كأن القسور الجون بجها ... عساليجه، والثامر المتناوح يقول: لو دعيت هذه المعز في مثل هذه الليلة الشتوية الشديدة البرد لأقبلت حتى تحلب، ولجاءت كأنها تمأت من القسور أي تجيء في الجدب والشتاء من كرمها وغزارتها كأنها في الخصب والربيع.

And Abu Hanifah said: 'Al-qaswar' is a sour plant from the 'najil' grass, and it is like a man's thick hair, long and large, and camels are eager for it. Jubayha Al-Ashja'i said in description of a goat from the herd: 'And if I had called out on a vast night... for its watering, a flowing stream of water. She would come as if 'al-qaswar' were her dark skin... its shoots, and the fruitful, the mutually supporting.' He means: if these goats were called upon on such a night of severe winter cold, they would come until milked, and they would come as if they were nourished by 'al-qaswar', meaning they come in drought and winter from their generosity and abundance as if in fertility and spring.

والقسوري: ضرب من الجعلان أحمر.

And 'al-qaswari': a type of red beetle.

والقيسري من الإبل: الضخم الشديد القوي، وهي القياسرة.

And 'al-qaysari' from camels: the large, strong, and powerful one, and it is 'al-qayasirah'.

والقيسري: الكبير؛ عن ابن الأعرابي؛ وأنشد: تضحك مني أن رأتني أشهق، ... والخبز في حنجرتي معلق، وقد يغض القيسري الأشدق . ورد ذلك عليه فقيل: إنما القيسري هنا الشديد القوي؛ وأما قول العجاج: أطربا وأنت قيسرى؟ ... والدهر بالإنسان دواري فهو الشيخ الكبير أيضا، ويروى قنسري، بكسر النون.

And 'al-qaysari': the old one; from Ibn Al-A'rabi. And he recited: 'She laughs at me when she sees me gasping... and the bread stuck in my throat. And 'al-qaysari' the wide-mouthed might swallow it.' This was refuted to him, and it was said: 'Al-qaysari' here means the strong, powerful one. As for the saying of Al-'Ajjaj: 'Are you delighted, and you are 'qaysara'? ... And time turns the human being around.' It means the old man, and it is narrated as 'qunsuri', with a kasrah on the noon.

وقال الليث: القيسري الضخم المنيع الشديد.

And Al-Layth said: 'Al-qaysari' is the large, impregnable, strong one.

والقوسرة والقوسرة، كلتاهما: لغة في القوصرة والقوصرة.

And 'al-qawsarah' and 'al-quwsarah', both are a dialectal variation for 'al-quwsarah' and 'al-quwsarah'.

وبنو قسر: بطن من بجيلة، إليهم ينسب خالد بن عبد الله القسري من العرب وهم رهطه.

And Banu Qasr: a clan from Bajila, to them is attributed Khalid ibn Abdullah Al-Qasri among the Arabs, and they are his kin.

والقسر: اسم رجل قيل هو راعي ابن أحمر، وإياه عنى بقوله: أظنها سمعت عزفا، فتحسبه ... أشاعه القسر ليلا حين ينتشر

And 'Al-Qasr': the name of a man, it is said he is the shepherd of Ibn Ahmar, and he is meant by his saying: 'I think she heard music, and she thinks... Al-Qasr spread it at night when it disperses.'

وقسر: موضع؛ قال النابغة الجعدي: شرقا بماء الذوب يجمعه ... في طود أيمن من قرى قسر

And 'Qasr': a place. Al-Nabighah Al-Ja'di said: 'Eastward with meltwater it gathers... in the mountain of Yaman from the villages of Qasr.'
