Shammir said: Al-fazr is breaking; he said: I was in the desert and saw tents pitched, so I asked a Bedouin: Whose tents are these? He said: For Banu Fazarah, may God break their backs. I asked: What do you mean by it? He said: May God break them.

ويقال: فزرت أنف فلان فزرا أي ضربته بشيء فشققته، فهو مفزور الأنف.

It is said: He struck so-and-so's nose and split it, so he is one whose nose is split.

وفيه: أن رجلا من الأنصار أخذ لحي جزور فضرب به أنف سعد ففزره أي شقه.

And their saying in the proverb: I will not come to you with the sheep of Fazar; Fazar is a nickname for Sa'd ibn Zayd Manat ibn Tamim, who came to the market with sheep and gave them away there, saying: Whoever takes one of them, it is his, and no two or more are to be taken from them. Abu Ubaidah said something similar, except that he said: Al-fazr is the young goat itself, so they made a proverb of it and said: I will not come to you with the sheep of Fazar, meaning until those gather, and they will never gather; this is the opinion of Ibn al-Kalbi; Abu al-Haytham said: I do not know it, and Al-Azhari said: I have not seen anyone who knows it.

يقال: لا أفعل ذلك معزى الفزر؛ فمعناه في معزى الفزر أن يقولوا حتى تجتمع تلك وهي لا تجتمع الدهر كله.
