And in the hadith: 'rabble, ghathrah'; thus it is narrated. It is said its origin is gaytharah from which the 'ya' was deleted. It is said in the hadith of Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, when the people entered to kill him, he said: 'Indeed, these are rabble, ghathrah,' meaning ignorant people.
قال ابن الأثير: وهو من الأغثر الأغبر، وقيل للأحمق الجاهل: أغثر، استعارة وتشبيها بالضبع الغثراء للونها،
Ibn al-Athir said: 'It is from al-aghthar al-aghbar (dusty). And the ignorant fool is called aghthar, by way of metaphor and comparison to the hyena (al-ghathra') for its color.'
والواحد غاثر، وقال القتيبي: لم أسمع غاثرا، وإنما يقال رجل أغثر إذا كان جاهلا، قال: والأجود في غثرة أن يقال هو جمع غاثر مثل كافر وكفرة،
And the singular is ghathir. Al-Qutaybi said: 'I have not heard of ghathir; rather, a man is called aghthar if he is ignorant.' He said: 'And the best explanation for ghathrah is to say it is the plural of ghathir, like kafir and kufrat.'
وفي حديث أبي ذر: أحب الإسلام وأهله وأحب الغثراء أي عامة الناس وجماعتهم، وأراد بالمحبة المناصحة لهم والشفقة عليهم.
And in the hadith of Abu Dharr: 'I love Islam and its people, and I love al-ghathra', meaning the common people and their community,' and by love he intended sincere advice and compassion for them.
وفي حديث أويس: أكون في غثراء الناس ؛ هكذا جاء في رواية، أي في العامة المجهولين، وقيل: هم الجماعة المختلطة من قبائل شتى.
And in the hadith of Uwais: 'I am among the ghathra' of people'; thus it came in a narration, meaning among the unknown commoners. It is said: 'They are the mixed group from various tribes.'
وقولهم: كانت بين القوم غيثرة شديدة؛ قال ابن الأعرابي: هي مداوسة القوم بعضهم بعضا في القتال.
And their saying: 'There was severe ghaytharah between the people'; Ibn al-A'rabi said: 'It is the people grappling with each other in combat.'
قال الأصمعي: تركت القوم في غيثرة وغيثمة أي في قتال واضطراب.
Al-Asma'i said: 'I left the people in ghaytharah and ghaythamah, meaning in combat and turmoil.'
والأغثر: الذي فيه غبرة. والأغثر: قريب من الأغبر؛ ويسمى الطحلب الأغثر، والغثرة: غبرة إلى خضرة، وقيل: الغثرة شبيهة بالغبشة يخلطها حمرة، وقيل: هي الغبرة، الذكر أغثر والأنثى غثراء؛
And al-aghthar: that which has dustiness. Al-aghthar: close to al-aghbar (dusty); and algae is called al-aghthar. And al-ghathrah: dustiness with a greenish tint. It is said: Al-ghathrah is similar to duskiness mixed with redness. It is said: It is dustiness; the male is aghthar and the female is ghathra'.
حتى اكتسيت من المشيب عمامة ... غثراء، أعفر لونها بخضاب
Until I was covered by gray hair with a turban... ghathra', its color is dusty (aghfar) with dye.
والغثراء وغثار معرفة: الضبع، كلتاهما للونها.
And al-ghathra' and al-ghuthar (definite): the hyena, both referring to its color.
قال ابن الأعرابي: الضبع فيها شكلة وغثرة أي لونان من سواد وصفرة سمجة، وذئب أغثر كذلك؛ ابن الأعرابي: الذئب فيه غبرة وطلسة وغثرة.
Ibn al-A'rabi said: 'The hyena has a mixture and ghathrah, meaning two colors of unpleasant blackness and yellowness.' And a wolf is aghthar similarly; Ibn al-A'rabi: 'The wolf has dustiness, muddiness, and ghathrah.'
وكبش أغثر: ليس بأحمر ولا أسود ولا أبيض.
And an aghthar ram: not red, nor black, nor white.
وفي حديث لقيامة: يؤتى بالموت كأنه كبش أغثر؛ قال: هو الكدر اللون كالأغبر والأربد والأغثر.
And in the hadith of the Resurrection: 'Death will be brought forth as if it were an aghthar ram'; it is said: 'It is of a turbid color like al-aghbar, al-arbad, and al-aghthar.'
والغثراء من الأكسية والقطائف ونحوهما: ما كثر صوفه وزئبره، وبه شبه الغلفق فوق الماء؛
And al-ghathra' from cloaks, carpets, and the like: that which has abundant wool and pile; and by this, the scum on water is likened.

And al-aghthar: a bird with tangled feathers, a long neck, with dustiness in its color, and it is a water bird.
ورجل أغثر: أحمق.
And a man aghthar: foolish.
والغنثر: الثقيل الوخم، نونه زائدة؛ ومنه قول أبي بكر الصديق، رضي الله عنه، لابنه عبد الرحمن، رضي الله عنه: يا غنثر.
And al-ghunthar: the heavy, sluggish one, its 'nun' is extra; and from this is the saying of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, to his son Abd al-Rahman, may Allah be pleased with him: 'O Ghunthar.'
وأصاب القوم من دنياهم غثرة أي كثرة.
And the people attained ghathrah from their worldly affairs, meaning abundance.
وعليه غثرة من مال أي قطعة.
And upon him is ghathrah of wealth, meaning a portion.
والمغاثير: لغة في المغافير.
And al-maghathir: a dialectal variant of al-maghafeer.
والمغثور: لغة في المغفور.
And al-maghthur: a dialectal variant of al-maghfur.
وأغثر الرمث وأغفر إذا سال منه صمغ حلو، ويقال له المغثور والمغثر، وجمعه المغاثير والمغافير، يؤكل وربما سال لثاه على الثرى مثل الدبس، وله ريح كريهة،
And al-ramth 'aghfara' and 'aghfara' if sweet gum flows from it, and it is called al-maghthur and al-maghthar, and its plural is al-maghathir and al-maghafeer. It is eaten, and its sap may flow onto the ground like molasses, and it has an unpleasant odor.
وقال يعقوب: هو شيء ينضحه الثمام والرمث والعرفط والعشر حلو كالعسل، واحدها مغثور ومغثار ومغثر؛ الأخيرة عن يعقوب وحده.
And Ya'qub said: 'It is something that the thamam, ramth, 'arfaj, and 'ashar exude, sweet like honey. Its singular is maghthur, maghthar, and maghthar; the last is from Ya'qub alone.'
وخرج الناس يتمغثرون، مثل يتمغفرون أي يجتنون المغافير.
And the people went out yatamaghtharun, like yatamaghfarun, meaning they were gathering al-maghafeer.
