And it is said al-'asran refers to the morning and the evening.
حافظ على العصرين ؛ يريد صلاة الفجر وصلاة العصر
Observe the two 'asr times; meaning the Fajr prayer and the Asr prayer.
قيل: وما العصران؟ قال: صلاة قبل طلوع الشمس وصلاة قبل غروبها
It was asked: And what are the two 'asr times? He said: A prayer before sunrise and a prayer before sunset.
ومننه حديث علي رضي الله عنه: ذكرهم بأيام الله واجلس لهم العصرين أي بكرة وعشيا.
And from it is the hadith of Ali, may God be pleased with him: Remind them of the days of God and sit with them in the two 'asr times, meaning morning and evening.
لا أفعل ذلك ما اختلف العصران.
I will not do that as long as the day and night alternate.
والعصر: العشي إلى احمرار الشمس، وصلاة العصر مضافة إلى ذلك الوقت، وبه سميت
And al-'asr: the late afternoon until the redness of the sun, and the Asr prayer is attributed to that time, and it was named after it.
تروح بنا يا عمرو، قد قصر العصر، ... وفي الروحة الأولى الغنيمة والأجر
Let's go, O Amr, the afternoon has shortened; ... In the first departure is spoils and reward.
والعصر الحبس، وسميت عصرا لأنها تعصر أي تحبس عن الأولى
And al-'asr is restraint, and it is called 'asr because it is squeezed, meaning held back from the first.
وأعصرنا: دخلنا في العصر.
And we entered the afternoon: we entered into the time of the afternoon.
وجاء فلان عصرا أي بطيئا.
And so-and-so came slowly, meaning slowly.
يقال: جاء فلان على عصار من الدهر أي حين.
It is said: So-and-so came at a certain time, meaning a time.
نام فلان وما نام العصر أي وما نام عصرا، أي لم يكد ينام.
So-and-so slept but did not sleep at all, meaning he barely slept.
يدعون جارهم وذمته ... علها، وما يدعون من عصر
They call upon their neighbor and his protection ... perhaps, and what they call upon for refuge.
المعصر: التي بلغت عصر شبابها وأدركت، وقيل: أول ما أدركت وحاضت
Al-mu'sir: she who has reached the age of her youth and maturity, and it was said: the first time she reached maturity and menstruated.
جارية بسفوان دارها ... قد أعصرت أو قد دنا إعصارها
A maiden in Safwan, her dwelling ... has reached maturity or her maturity is near.
هي التي قاربت الحيض لأن الإعصار في الجارية كالمراهقة في الغلام
She is the one who is close to menstruation because maturity in a girl is like adolescence in a boy.
المعصر هي التي راهقت العشرين، وقيل: المعصر ساعة تطمث أي تحيض لأنها تحبس في البيت، يجعل لها عصرا
Al-mu'sir is she who is nearing twenty, and it was said: Al-mu'sir is the time of menstruation because she is confined to the house, and a period is made for her.
أعصرت الجارية وأشهدت وتوضأت إذا أدركت.
The girl has reached maturity, become aware, and purified herself when she reached maturity.
بلغت عصرة شبابها وإدراكها؛ يقال بلغت عصرها وعصورها
She reached the age of her youth and maturity; it is said she reached her age and her ages.
وفنقها المراضع والعصور
And her young ones are the sucklings and the young ones.
كان إذا قدم دحية لم يبق معصر إلا خرجت تنظر إليه من حسنه
When Dihyah arrived, no maiden remained but she came out to look at him because of his beauty.
المعصر الجارية أول ما تحيض لانعصار رحمها
Al-mu'sir is the maiden when she first menstruates due to the expulsion from her womb.
عصر العنب ونحوه مما له دهن أو شراب أو عسل يعصره عصرا
To press grapes and the like from which oil, drink, or honey is extracted, he presses it with a pressing.
فهو معصور، وعصير، واعتصره: استخرج ما فيه
So it is pressed, and juice, and he squeezed it: he extracted what was in it.
عصارة الشيء وعصاره وعصيره: ما تحلب منه إذا عصرته
The extract of a thing, its extract, and its juice: what is squeezed from it when you press it.
فإن العذارى قد خلطن للمتي ... عصارة حناء معا وصبيب
For the virgins have mixed for the perfume ... extract of henna together and dye.
وأنى فليس عصاره كعصار
And when, its extract is not like extract.
والعصارة: ما سال عن العصر وما بقي من الثفل أيضا بعد العصر
And al-'usaarah: what flows from pressing and what remains of the dregs also after pressing.
عصارة الخبز الذي تحلبا
The extract of the bread that was squeezed out.
وصار ما في الخبز من عصيره ... إلى سرار الأرض، أو قعوره
And what was in the bread from its juice went ... to the depths of the earth, or its hollows.
وكل شيء عصر ماؤه، فهو عصير
And everything whose water is pressed out, it is juice.
والمعصرة: التي يعصر فيها العنب.
And al-mu'sarah: the place where grapes are pressed.
والمعصار: الذي يجعل فيه الشيء ثم يعصر حتى يتحلب ماؤه.
And al-mis'aar: that in which something is placed then pressed until its water flows out.
والعواصر: ثلاثة أحجار يعصرون العنب بها يجعلون بعضها فوق بعض.
And al-'awaasir: three stones by which they press grapes, placing some on top of others.
لا أفعله ما دام للزيت عاصر
I will not do it as long as there is a presser for the oil.
والمعصرات: السحاب فيها المطر
And al-mu'siraat: clouds containing rain.
وأنزلنا من المعصرات ماء ثجاجا
And We sent down from the rain clouds, abundant water.
أعصر الناس: أمطروا
The people were rained upon: they received rain.
فيه يغاث الناس وفيه يعصرون
By it people are given rain and by it they are rained upon.
قال لبيد: وما كان وقافا بدار معصر
Labeed said: And he was not one to stop at a place of rain.
قال أبو زبيد: صاديا يستغيث غير مغاث، ... ولقد كان عصرة المنجود
Abu Zubayd said: Thirsty, seeking help, not helped, ... and indeed he was the refuge of the distressed.
المعصر السحابة التي قد آن لها أن تصب
Al-mu'sir is the cloud that is due to pour.
السحابة المعصر التي تتحلب بالمطر ولما تجتمع مثل الجارية المعصر قد كادت تحيض ولما تحض
The mu'sir cloud is that which is about to rain but has not yet gathered, like the mu'sir girl who is about to menstruate but has not yet.
إن المعصرات الرياح ذوات الأعاصير، وهو الرهج والغبار
Indeed, al-mu'siraat are winds with whirlwinds, which are dust and dirt.
وكأن سهك المعصرات كسوتها ... ترب الفدافد والبقاع بمنخل
And as if the scent of the dust storms clothed you ... with the dust of the plains and the valleys through a sieve.
وأنزلنا من المعصرات ماء ثجاجا
And We sent down from the rain clouds, abundant water.
المعصرات السحائب لأنها تعصر الماء
Al-mu'siraat are clouds because they squeeze out water.
وذي أشر كالأقحوان تشوفه ... ذهاب الصبا، والمعصرات الدوالح
And of the proud like the chamomile, you see ... the passing of youth, and the heavy rain clouds.
والذهاب: الأمطار، ويقال: إن الخير بهذا البلد عصر مصر أي يقلل ويقطع.
And al-dhahaab: the rains, and it is said: goodness in this country is scarce and cut off.
الإعصار: الريح تثير السحاب
Al-i'saar: the wind that stirs up clouds.
فأصابها إعصار فيه نار فاحترقت
Then a whirlwind with fire struck it, and it burned.
الإعصار الرياح التي تهب من الأرض وتثير الغبار فترتفع كالعمود إلى نحو السماء
Al-i'saar is the winds that blow from the earth and stir up dust, rising like a column towards the sky.
إن كنت ريحا فقد لاقيت إعصارا
If you are a wind, you have met a whirlwind.
أن تهيج الريح التراب فترفعه.
For the wind to stir up the dust and lift it.
إذا ما جد واستذكى عليها، ... أثرن عليه من رهج عصارا
When it became strong and fragrant upon it, ... they stirred up dust from it.
الإعصار الريح التي تسطع في السماء
Al-i'saar is the wind that rises into the sky.
وبينما المرء في الأحياء مغتبط، ... إذا هو الرمس تعفوه الأعاصير
And while a person is happy among the living, ... suddenly he is the grave, swept away by whirlwinds.
والعصر والعصرة: الغبار.
And al-'asr and al-'asrah: dust.
أن امرأة مرت به متطيبة بذيلها عصرة، وفي رواية: إعصار
That a woman passed by him, perfumed, with her garment raising dust, and in another narration: a whirlwind.
فقال: أين تريدين يا أمة الجبار؟ فقالت: أريد المسجد ؛ أراد الغبار أنه ثار من سحبها، وهو الإعصار
He said: Where are you going, O servant of the Almighty? She said: I want the mosque; he meant the dust that rose from her garment, which is the whirlwind.
والعصر: العطية؛ عصره يعصره: أعطاه
And al-'asr: the gift; he gave it to him: he gave it to him.
لو كان في أملاكنا واحد، ... يعصر فينا كالذي تعصر
If there were one among our possessions, ... who gives to us like you give.
أي يتخذ فينا الأيادي، وقال غيره: أي يعطينا كالذي تعطينا
Meaning he bestows favors upon us, and others said: Meaning he gives to us like you give to us.
الاعتصار: انتجاع العطية.
Al-i'tisar: seeking a gift.
وإنما العيش بربانه، ... وأنت من أفنانه معتصر
And life is by its master, ... and you are plucked from its branches.
والمعتصر: الذي يصيب من الشيء ويأخذ منه.
And al-mu'tasir: he who obtains from something and takes from it.
ورجل كريم المعتصر والمعصر والعصارة أي جواد عند المسألة كريم.
And a generous man of the 'mu'tasir', 'mu'sir', and 'usaarah' meaning generous when asked.
فمن واستبقى ولم يعتصر
So whoever preserves and keeps and does not withhold.
وكل شيء منعته، فقد عصرته.
And everything you prevent, you have restrained.
سئل عن العصرة للمرأة، فقال: لا أعلم رخص فيها إلا للشيخ المعقوف المنحني ؛ العصرة هاهنا: منع البنت من التزويج
He was asked about 'al-'usrah' for a woman, and he said: I do not know of any permission for it except for an old, bent man; 'al-'usrah' here means preventing a daughter from marrying.
اعتصر عليه: بخل عليه بما عنده ومنعه.
He was stingy with him: he was stingy with him with what he had and withheld it.
اعتصر ماله: استخرجه من يده.
He reclaimed his property: he took it out of his hand.
أنه قضى أن الوالد يعتصر ولده فيما أعطاه وليس للولد أن يعتصر من والده، لفضل الوالد على الولد
That he ruled that a father can reclaim from his son what he gave him, and the son cannot reclaim from his father, due to the father's superiority over the son.
قوله يعتصر ولده أي له أن يحبسه عن الإعطاء ويمنعه إياه.
His saying 'he reclaims his son' means he has the right to withhold it from giving and prevent him from it.
وكل شيء منعته وحبسته فقد اعتصرته؛ وقيل: يعتصر يرتجع.
And everything you prevent and withhold, you have reclaimed; and it was said: 'ya'tasir' means to take back.
اعتصر العطية: ارتجعها
He took back the gift: he reclaimed it.
يعتصر الوالد على ولده في ماله
The father reclaims from his son regarding his property.
المعتصر الذي يصيب من الشيء يأخذ منه ويحبسه
Al-mu'tasir is one who obtains something, takes it, and withholds it.
