Or a scent of musk that a sprinkle has touched.

And it is narrated: As if her mouth were cold 'Abqari.

والرك: المطر الضعيف، وتنضاحه: ترششه.

And ar-rukk is the light rain, and tanḍāḥuhu is its sprinkling.

إنه لأبرد من عبقر وأبرد من حبقر وأبرد من عضرس

It is colder than 'Abqar, colder than Habqar, and colder than 'Adras.

والحبقر والعبقر والعضرس البرد.

And al-Habqar, al-'Abqar, and al-'Adras are cold.

عبقر والعبقر البرد.

'Abqar and al-'Abqar are cold.

العبقر موضع تزعم العرب أنه من أرض الجن

Al-'Abqar is a place which the Arabs claim to be from the land of the jinn.

ومن فاد من إخوانهم وبنيهم، ... كهول وشبان كجنة عبقر

And whoever comes from their brothers and their sons, ... elders and youths like the jinn of 'Abqar.

مضوا سلفا قصد السبيل عليهم ... بهيا من السلاف، ليس بجيدر

They passed on ahead, following the path before them... splendid from the pure wine, not short.

نسبوا إليه كل شيء تعجبوا من حذقه أو جودة صنعته وقوته فقالوا: عبقري

They attributed to it everything they marveled at for its skill, the excellence of its craftsmanship, and its strength, so they said: 'Abqari.

وهو واحد وجمع، والأنثى عبقرية

And it is singular and plural, and the feminine is 'Abqariyyah.

كأن صليل المرو، حين تشده، ... صليل زيوف ينتقدن بعبقرا

Like the clinking of flint, when you strike it, ... the clinking of counterfeit coins being tested in 'Abqara.

حتى كأن رياض القف ألبسها، ... من وشي عبقر، تجليل وتنجيد

Until it is as if the meadows of the steppe were clothed, ... with the embroidery of 'Abqar, adornment and embellishment.

عبقر قرية تسكنها الجن فيما زعموا

'Abqar is a village inhabited by jinn, according to their claim.

فكلما رأوا شيئا فائقا غريبا مما يصعب عمله ويدق أو شيئا عظيما في نفسه نسبوه إليها فقالوا: عبقري

So whenever they saw something extraordinary and strange that was difficult to make and intricate, or something great in itself, they attributed it to it and said: 'Abqari.

اتسع فيه حتى سمي به السيد والكبير.

It was extended to include the master and the great one.

أنه كان يسجد على عبقري

That he used to prostrate himself on an 'Abqari.

وهي هذه البسط التي فيها الأصباغ والنقوش

And these are the carpets that have dyes and patterns.

حتى قالوا ظلم عبقري

Until they said 'Abqari injustice.

وهذا عبقري قوم للرجل القوي

And this is an 'Abqari of a people for a strong man.

فقال عبقري حسان

So He said, 'Abqari hasan.

وقرأه بعضهم: عباقري

And some of them read it: 'Abāqiri.

أراد جمع عبقري

He intended the plural of 'Abqari.

العبقري الطنافس الثخان، واحدتها عبقرية

Al-'Abqari are thick carpets, their singular is 'Abqariyyah.

And Qatadah said: they are rugs, and Sa'id bin Jubayr said: they are fine rugs.

وقد قالوا عباقر ماء لبني فزارة

And they have mentioned 'Abāqir, a water source of Banu Fazarah.

أهلي بنجد ورحلي في بيوتكم، ... على عباقر من غورية العلم

My family is in Najd and my journey is in your homes, ... on 'Abāqir from Ghawriyyah of Al-'Ilm.

'Abqar is a village in Yemen where clothes and carpets are embroidered, so its clothes are the finest clothes, and it became a metaphor for anything attributed to something high.

فكلما بالغوا في نعت شيء متناه نسبوه إليه

So whenever they exaggerated in describing something ultimate, they attributed it to it.

وقيل: إنما ينسب إلى عبقر الذي هو موضع الجن

And it was said: it is only attributed to 'Abqar, which is the place of the jinn.

ما وجدنا أحدا يدري أين هذه البلاد ولا متى كانت.

We have not found anyone who knows where this land is or when it existed.

ويقال: ظلم عبقري ومال عبقري ورجل عبقري كامل.

And it is said: 'Abqari injustice, 'Abqari wealth, and a complete 'Abqari man.

فلم أر عبقريا يفري فريه

Then I did not see an 'Abqari matching his performance.

سألت أبا عمرو بن العلاء عن العبقري، فقال: يقال هذا عبقري قوم، كقولك هذا سيد قوم وكبيرهم وشديدهم وقويهم ونحو ذلك.

I asked Abu Amr bin Al-'Ala about al-'Abqari, and he said: It is said, this is an 'Abqari of a people, like your saying: this is the chief of a people, their elder, their strong one, their powerful one, and the like.

وإنما أصل هذا فيما يقال أنه نسب إلى عبقر، وهي أرض يسكنها الجن، فصارت مثلا لكل منسوب إلى شيء رفيع

And the origin of this, as it is said, is its attribution to 'Abqar, which is a land inhabited by jinn, so it became a metaphor for anything attributed to something high.

بخيل عليها جنة عبقرية، ... جديرون يوما أن ينالوا فيستعلوا

With horses upon which are the jinn of 'Abqariyyah, ... worthy one day to attain and overcome.

أصل العبقري صفة لكل ما بولغ في وصفه

The origin of al-'Abqari is an attribute for everything whose description is exaggerated.

وأصله أن عبقر بلد يوشى فيه البسط وغيرها، فنسب كل شيء جيد إلى عبقر.

And its origin is that 'Abqar is a land where carpets and other things are embroidered, so everything good was attributed to 'Abqar.

وعبقري القوم: سيدهم

And the 'Abqari of the people: their chief.

وقيل: العبقري الذي ليس فوقه شيء

And it was said: al-'Abqari is one who has nothing above him.

والعبقري: الشديد

And al-'Abqari: the strong one.

والعبقري: السيد من الرجال

And al-'Abqari: the chief among men.

وهو الفاخر من الحيوان والجوهر.

And it is the magnificent among animals and substances.

فقيل أصله عبيقر

So it was said its origin is 'Ubayqir.

وقيل: عبقور فحذفت الواو

And it was said: 'Abqūr, so the waw was deleted.

وهو ذلك الموضع نفسه.

And it is that same place.

والعبقر والعبقرة من النساء: المرأة التارة الجميلة

And al-'Abqar and al-'Abqarah from women: the beautiful and attractive woman.

تبدل حصن بأزواجه ... عشارا، وعبقرة عبقرا

He replaced Hisan with his wives... pregnant, and a beautiful woman, a beautiful woman.

أراد عبقرة عبقرة فأبدل من الهاء ألفا للوصل

He intended 'Abqarah 'Abqarah, so he substituted an alif for the haa' for connection.

وعبقر: من أسماء النساء.

And 'Abqar: is among the names of women.
