And their training is to put saddles on them and cover them with blankets until they sweat beneath them, so their excess fat goes and their flesh tightens.

فذلك التضمير الذي شاهدت العرب تفعله، يسمون ذلك مضمارا وتضميرا.

So that is the training that the Arabs witnessed and practiced, they call that 'miḍmār' and 'taḍmīr'.

وتضمير الفرس أيضا أن تعلفه حتى يسمن ثم ترده إلى القوت، وذلك في أربعين يوما، وهذه المدة تسمى المضمار

And training a horse is also to feed it until it fattens, then return it to sustenance, and that is in forty days, and this period is called 'al-miḍmār'.

And 'al-ḍimār' of wealth: that whose return is not hoped for, and 'al-ḍimār' of promises: that which is due to procrastination.

وإنما قيل له مضمر لأن حركته كالمضمر، إن شئت جئت بها، وإن شئت سكنته

And it was only called 'muḍammar' because its movement is like the hidden (vowel), if you wish you bring it, and if you wish you make it silent.

وأنضاء أنخن إلى سعيد طروقا، ثم عجلن ابتكارا حمدن مزاره، فأصبن منه عطاء لم يكن عدة ضمارا

And tired camels knelt to Sa'id during the night, then hurried in the morning. They praised his visit, and received from him a gift that was not an uncertain promise.

فإنه كان مالا ضمارا لا يرجى

For it was wealth that was lost ('ḍimār'), not to be hoped for.
