ورجل سهار العين: لا يغلبه النوم؛
And a man with sleepless eyes: sleep does not overcome him;
ليل ساهر أي ذو سهر،
A sleepless night, meaning possessing sleeplessness,
كتمتك ليلا بالجمومين ساهرا،
I concealed from you a night with abundant waters, while sleepless,
فسهرت عنها الكالئين، فلم أنم ... حتى التفت إلى السماك الأعزل
So I stayed awake from them, the watchers, and did not sleep... until I turned to the distant star.
السَّهَار والسهاد، بالراء والدال.
Al-suhar and al-suhad, with ra and dal.
الساهرة: الأرض، وقيل: وجهها.
Al-sahira: the earth, and it is said: its surface.
فإذا هم بالساهرة ؛
Then they are on the earth;
وقيل: الساهرة الفلاة؛
And it is said: al-sahira is the desert;
يرتدن ساهرة، كأن جميمها ... وعميمها أسداف ليل مظلم
They roam a desert, as if their gathering... and their multitude were the dark curtains of night.
وقيل: هي الأرض التي لم توطأ، وقيل: هي أرض يجددها الله يوم القيامة.
And it is said: it is the land that has not been trodden, and it is said: it is land that God will renew on the Day of Resurrection.
الساهرة وجه الأرض العريضة البسيطة.
Al-sahira is the wide and plain surface of the earth.
كأنها سميت بهذا الاسم لأن فيها الحيوان نومهم وسهرهم،
It is as if it was named this because in it animals have their sleep and their wakefulness,
وفيها لحم ساهرة وبحر،
And in it is the flesh of the earth and the sea,
وساهور العين: أصلها ومنبع مائها، يعني عين الماء؛
And 'sahur' of the eye: its origin and the source of its water, meaning a spring of water;
لاقت تميم الموت في ساهورها،
Tameem met death in its spring,
ويقال لعين الماء ساهرة إذا كانت جارية.
And a spring of water is called 'sahira' if it is flowing.
خير المال عين ساهرة لعين نائمة ؛
The best wealth is a flowing spring (sahira) to a sleeping eye (nā'ima);
إنها لساهرة العرق، وهو طول حفلها وكثرة لبنها.
She is 'sahirat al-'araq', which is the length of her udder and the abundance of her milk.
والأسهران: عرقان يصعدان من الأنثيين حتى يجتمعا عند باطن الفيشلة، وهما عرقا المني،
And al-asheran: two veins that ascend from the testicles until they meet at the inner part of the groin, and they are the veins of semen,
وهما العرقان اللذان يندران من الذكر عند الإنعاظ،

عرقان في المتن يجري فيهما الماء ثم يقع في الذكر؛

حوالب أسهريه بالذنين

وأنكر الأصمعي الأسهرين، قال: وإنما الرواية أسهرته أي لم تدعه ينام،
And Al-Asma'i denied 'al-asherin', saying: The narration is 'as'haratuhu', meaning it did not let him sleep,
أسهراه ذكره وأنفه.
'As'harahu' refers to his penis and his nose.
والأسهران عرقان في الأنف،
And al-asheran are two veins in the nose,
إذا اغتلم الحمار سالا دما أو ماء.
When the donkey is aroused, they bleed blood or water.
والساهرة والساهور: كالغلاف للقمر يدخل فيه إذا كسف فيما تزعمه العرب؛
And al-sahira and al-sahur: like a sheath for the moon into which it enters when it is eclipsed, according to what the Arabs claim;
قمر وساهور يسل ويغمد
A moon and a sheath that is drawn and sheathed
وقيل: الساهور للقمر كالغلاف للشيء؛
And it is said: Al-sahur is to the moon like a sheath is to a thing;
كأنها عرق سام عند ضاربه، ... أو فلقة خرجت من جوف ساهور
As if she were a vein of poison near its striker, ... or a piece that came out of the core of a sahur
أو شقة خرجت من جنب ساهور
Or a piece that came out from the side of a sahur
يقال للقمر إذا كسف: دخل في ساهوره، وهو الغاسق إذا وقب.
It is said of the moon when it is eclipsed: it has entered its sahur, which is the darkness when it encroaches.
تعوذي بالله من هذا فإنه الغاسق إذا وقب ؛ يريد: يسود إذا كسف.
Seek refuge in God from this, for it is the darkness when it encroaches; meaning: it turns black when it is eclipsed.
والساهور والسهر: نفس القمر.
And al-sahur and al-sahar: the moon itself.
والساهور: دارة القمر، كلاهما سرياني.
And al-sahur: the disc of the moon, both are Syriac.
ويقال: الساهور ظل الساهرة، وهي وجه الأرض.
And it is said: Al-sahur is the shadow of al-sahira, which is the surface of the earth.
