كأن المعنى، والله أعلم، أنه يبلغ من ثنائه أنه يمدح الإنسان فيصدق فيه حتى يصرف القلوب إلى قوله ثم يذمه فيصدق فيه حتى يصرف القلوب إلى قوله الآخر، فكأنه قد سحر السامعين بذلك

The meaning, and God knows best, is that his praise reaches such a point that he praises a person and it is believed, thus turning hearts to his words, then he disparages him and it is believed, thus turning hearts to his other words, as if he has bewitched the listeners with that.

إن من البيان ما يصرف قلوب السامعين وإن كان غير حق

Indeed, some eloquence can sway the hearts of listeners even if it is not true.

وأصل السحر صرف الشيء عن حقيقته إلى غيره

And the origin of magic is turning something from its reality to something else.

فكأن الساحر لما أرى الباطل في صورة الحق وخيل الشيء على غير حقيقته، قد سحر الشيء عن وجهه أي صرفه

So it is as if the magician, when he shows falsehood in the form of truth and makes something appear other than its reality, has turned the thing from its true nature, meaning he has diverted it.

فأنى تسحرون ؛ معناه فأنى تصرفون

So how are you enchanted? Meaning, how are you turned away?

تقول العرب للرجل ما سحرك عن وجه كذا وكذا أي ما صرفك عنه؟

The Arabs say to a man, 'What magic turned you away from such and such?' meaning, 'What diverted you from it?'

العرب إنما سمت السحر سحرا لأنه يزيل الصحة إلى المرض

The Arabs only named magic 'siḥr' because it removes health and causes illness.

وإنما يقال سحره أي أزاله عن البغض إلى الحب

And it is said 'he enchanted him' meaning he turned him from hatred to love.

يريد أن غلبة حبها كالسحر وليس به لأنه حب حلال، والحلال لا يكون سحرا لأن السحر كالخداع

He means that the overwhelming love for her is like magic, but it is not magic because it is a lawful love, and lawful love is not magic because magic is like deception.

رأيتك مسحورا، يمينك فاجره

I saw you bewitched; your oath, then break it.

من تعلم بابا من النجوم فقد تعلم بابا من السحر

Whoever learns a chapter of astronomy has learned a chapter of magic.

والسحر والسحارة: شيء يلعب به الصبيان إذا مد من جانب خرج على لون، وإذا مد من جانب آخر خرج على لون آخر مخالف

And al-siḥr and al-siḥārah: it is something children play with; if pulled from one side it comes out one color, and if pulled from another side it comes out a different, opposing color.

وسحره بالطعام والشراب يسحره سحرا وسحره: غذاه وعلله، وقيل: خدعه

And 'saḥarahu bi-l-ṭaʿām wa-l-sharāb' (he nourished him with food and drink) means he fed him and nurtured him, and it is said: he deceived him.

نسحر بالطعام وبالشراب عصافير وذبان ودود

We nourish with food and drink sparrows, flies, and worms.

فإن تسألينا: فيم نحن؟ فإننا عصافير من هذا الأنام المسحر

If you ask us: 'What are we about?' then indeed we are sparrows among these enchanted people.

إنما أنت من المسحرين

You are only among those who are nourished.

إنما أنت بشر مثلنا

You are only a human being like us.

إن تتبعون إلا رجلا مسحورا

You follow none but an enchanted man.

يا أيها الساحر ادع لنا ربك بما عهد عندك إننا لمهتدون

O sorcerer, call upon your Lord for us with what He has covenanted with you; indeed, we are [now] guided.

والسحر: الفساد

And magic is corruption.

وطعام مسحور إذا أفسد عمله

And 'ṭaʿām masḥūr' (spoiled food) if its effect is corrupted.

ونبت مسحور: مفسود

And 'nabt masḥūr' (spoiled plant): corrupted.

أرض مسحورة: أصابها من المطر أكثر مما ينبغي فأفسدها

Masḥūrah land: it was struck by more rain than it should have, and it corrupted it.

وغيث ذو سحر إذا كان ماؤه أكثر مما ينبغي

And rain with 'siḥr' if its water is more than it should be.

وسحر المطر الطين والتراب سحرا: أفسده فلم يصلح للعمل

And the rain corrupted the mud and the earth, spoiling it so it was not fit for work.

أرض مسحورة: قليلة اللبن

Masḥūrah land: low in milk.

إن اللسق يسحر ألبان الغنم، وهو أن ينزل اللبن قبل الولاد

Indeed, the 'lasaq' spoils the milk of sheep, which is when the milk comes down before lambing.

والسحر والسحر: آخر الليل قبيل الصبح

And al-saḥar and al-saḥar: the end of the night, just before dawn.

أسحر القوم: صاروا في السحر، كقولك، أصبحوا

Asḥara al-qawm: they entered the pre-dawn time, like saying 'they entered the morning'.

أسحروا واستحروا: خرجوا في السحر

Asḥarū and istiḥarrū: they went out at pre-dawn.

بكرن بكورا واستحرن بسحرة

They set out early and traveled at pre-dawn.

And 'istaḥarra al-ṭā'ir' (the bird sang at pre-dawn).

إذا طرب الطائر المستحر

When the bird singing at pre-dawn is delighted.

والسحور: طعام السحر وشرابه

And al-suḥūr: the food and drink of pre-dawn.

السحور ما يتسحر به وقت السحر من طعام أو لبن أو سويق وضع اسما لما يؤكل ذلك الوقت

Al-suḥūr is what is eaten at the time of pre-dawn, whether food, milk, or gruel, and it is named for what is eaten at that time.

وقد تسحر الرجل ذلك الطعام أي أكله

And the man has eaten that food, meaning he has consumed it.

هو بالفتح اسم ما يتسحر به من الطعام والشراب، وبالضم المصدر والفعل نفسه

It is with a fatha the name for what is eaten at pre-dawn, food or drink, and with a damma the مصدر (verbal noun) and the verb itself.

والسحر والسحر والسحر: ما التزق بالحلقوم والمريء من أعلى البطن

And al-siḥr, al-siḥr, and al-siḥr: what adheres to the windpipe and esophagus from the upper abdomen.

ويقال للجبان: قد انتفخ سحره

And it is said to the coward: 'His lungs have inflated'.

إذا نزت بالرجل البطنة يقال: انتفخ سحره؛ معناه عدا طوره وجاوز قدره

If a man suffers from indigestion, it is said: 'His lungs have inflated'; meaning he has exceeded his limit and gone beyond his capacity.

إنما يقال انتفخ سحره للجبان الذي ملأ الخوف جوفه، فانتفخ السحر وهو الرئة حتى رفع القلب إلى الحلقوم

It is only said 'his lungs inflated' for the coward whose insides are filled with fear, so the lungs inflate until the heart is raised to the throat.

وبلغت القلوب الحناجر وتظنون بالله الظنونا

And the hearts have reached the throats, and you assume about Allah [various] assumptions.

وأنذرهم يوم الآزفة إذ القلوب لدى الحناجر

And warn them of the Approaching Day when the hearts are in the throats.

المقطعة الأسحار، والمقطعة السحور، والمقطعة النياط، وهو على التفاؤل، أي سحره يقطع على هذا الاسم

The one that cuts the lungs, the one that cuts the suhoor, and the one that cuts the vital organs, and this is an omen, meaning its lungs are cut according to this name.

انتفخ سحرك أي رئتك

Your lungs have inflated, meaning your lungs.

يقال ذلك للجبان وكل ذي سحر مسحر

This is said to the coward and everyone whose lungs are inflated.

وأربط ذي مسامع، أنت، جأشا، إذا انتفخت من الوهل السحور

And you are the most steadfast of those with hearing, when your lungs inflate from fear.

والسحر أيضا: الكبد

And al-siḥr is also: the liver.

والسحر: سواد القلب ونواحيه، وقيل: هو القلب، وهو السحرة أيضا

And al-siḥr: the blackness of the heart and its surroundings, and it is said: it is the heart, and it is also al-siḥarah.

وإني امرؤ لم تشعر الجبن سحرتي

And indeed, I am a man whose fear has not touched my heart.
