وَالزَّنْبُورُ: شَجَرَةٌ عَظِيمَةٌ فِي طُولِ الدَّلْبَةِ وَلَا عَرْضَ لَهَا،

And 'al-zunbur': is a large tree in the length of a poplar and without width,

وَرَقُهَا مِثْلُ وَرَقِ الجَوْزِ فِي مَنْظَرِهِ وَرِيحِهِ، وَلَهَا نُورٌ مِثْلُ نُورِ العُشَرِ أَبْيَضُ مُشْرَبٌ، وَلَهَا حَمْلٌ مِثْلُ الزَّيْتُونِ سَوَاءٌ،

Its leaves are like walnut leaves in appearance and smell, and it has a bloom like the 'ushar' bloom, white with a tinge, and it has fruit like olives exactly,

فَإِذَا نَضَجَ اشْتَدَّ سَوَادُهُ وَحَلَا جِدًّا، يَأْكُلُهُ النَّاسُ كَالرَّطْبِ، وَلَهَا عُجْمَةٌ كَعُجْمَةِ الغُبَيْرَاءِ، وَهِيَ تَصْبُغُ الفَمَ كَمَا يَصْبُغُهُ الفِرْصَادُ، تُغْرَسُ غَرْسًا.

So when it ripens, its blackness intensifies and it becomes very sweet, people eat it like fresh dates, and it has a pit like the pit of 'ghubayra', and it stains the mouth as 'firsad' stains it, it is planted by cuttings.

قَالَ ابْنُ الأَعْرَابِيِّ: مِنْ غَرِيبِ شَجَرِ البَرِّ الزَّنَابِيرُ، وَاحِدَتُهَا زَنْبِيرَةٌ وَزِنْبَارَةٌ وَزُنْبُورَةٌ، وَهُوَ ضَرْبٌ مِنَ التِّينِ، وَأَهْلُ الحَضَرِ يُسَمُّونَهُ الحِلْوَانِيَّ.

Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Among the strange trees of the desert are 'al-zanabir', its singular is 'zanbira', 'zinbara', and 'zunbura', and it is a type of fig, and the city dwellers call it 'al-hilwani'.

وَالزَّنْبُورُ مِنَ الفَأْرِ: العَظِيمُ، وَجَمْعُهُ زَنَابِرُ؛

And 'al-zunbur' of mice: is the large one, and its plural is 'zanabir';

فَأَقْنَعَ كَفَّيْهِ وَأَجْنَحَ صَدْرَهُ ... بِجُرْعٍ، كَإِنْتاجِ الزَّبابِ الزَّنابيرِ

So he cupped his hands and spread his chest... with gulps, like the offspring of mice, the large ones
