And in the hadith about coitus interruptus: 'It was as if it was forbidden; meaning, it was prohibited, and wherever 'al-zajr' occurs in the hadith, it means prohibition.'

وزجر السبع والكلب وزجر به: نهنهه.

And he deterred the wild beast and the dog, and he deterred with it: he restrained it.

قال سيبويه: وقالوا هو مني مزجر الكلب أي بتلك المنزلة فحذف وأوصل.

Sibawayh said: And they said, 'He is from me as far as a dog can be deterred,' meaning at that distance, so it was omitted and connected.

وزجرت البعير حتى ثار ومضى أزجره زجرا.

And I urged the camel until it moved and went, I urge it on with a cry.

وزجرت فلانا عن السوء فانزجر، وهو كالردع للإنسان.

And I deterred so-and-so from evil, and he desisted, and it is like restraint for a human.

وأما للبعير فهو كالحث بلفظ يكون زجرا له.

But for a camel, it is like urging with a word that is a deterrent to it.

قال الزجاج: الزجر النهر، والزجر للطير وغيرها التيمن بسنوحها والتشاؤم ببروحها.

Al-Zajjaj said: Al-zajr is reprimanding, and al-zajr for birds and others is taking good omens from their rightward flight and bad omens from their leftward flight.

وإنما سمي الكاهن زاجرا لأنه إذا رأى ما يظن أنه يتشاءم به زجر بالنهي عن المضي في تلك الحاجة برفع صوت وشدة.

And the soothsayer is only called a 'zajir' because when he sees what he thinks is an ill omen, he deters [people] from proceeding with that need by raising his voice and with intensity.

الليث: الزجر أن تزجر طائرا أو ظبيا سانحا أو بارحا فتطير منه.

Al-Layth: Al-zajr is that you deter a bird or a gazelle, whether it flies right or left, and it flies away from you.

وفي الحديث: كان شريح زاجرا شاعرا ؛ الزجر للطير هو التيمن والتشاؤم بها والتفؤل بطيرانها كالسانح والبارح، وهو نوع من الكهانة والعيافة.

And in the hadith: 'Shurayh was a diviner of poets'; Al-zajr for birds is taking good omens and bad omens from them and foretelling by their flight, like rightward and leftward, and it is a type of soothsaying and augury.

وفي حديث ابن مسعود: من قرأ القرآن في أقل من ثلاث، فهو زاجر ؛ من زجر الإبل يزجرها إذا حثها وحملها على السرعة.

And in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud: 'Whoever reads the Quran in less than three [days] is a 'zajir'; from 'zajara al-ibil' (he urges the camels), he urges them when he hastens them and makes them move quickly.

قال الأزهري: وزجر البعير أن يقال له: حوب، وللناقة: حل. وأما البغل فزجره: عدس، مجزوم؛ ويزجر السبع فيقال له: هج هج وجه جه وجاه جاه.

Al-Azhari said: And urging a camel is saying to it: 'hawb', and to a she-camel: 'hall'. As for a mule, its urging is: 'adas', jussive; and he urges a wild beast by saying to it: 'haj haj, wajh jah, wa jah jah.'

وزجر الطائر يزجره زجرا وازدجره تفاءل به وتطير فنهاه ونهره.

And he observed the bird, he took an omen from it, and he was deterred by it, and he took an omen from it, so he forbade him and reprimanded him.

والزجور من الإبل: التي تدر على الفصيل إذا ضربت، فإذا تركت منعته، وقيل: هي التي لا تدر حتى تزجر وتنهر.

And al-zajur from camels: is one that gives milk to the young one when it is struck, but if left alone, it withholds it, and it was said: it is one that does not give milk until it is urged and reprimanded.

والزجور: هي التي ترأم بأنفها وتمنع درها.

And al-zajur: is one that is affectionate with its nose and withholds its milk.

الجوهري: الزجور من الإبل التي تعرف بعينها وتنكر بأنفها.

Al-Jawhari: Al-zajur from camels is one that recognizes with its eye and rejects with its nose.

وبعير أزجر: في فقاره انخزال من داء أو دبر.

And an 'azjar' camel: has a weakness in its spine from disease or old age.

وزجرت الناقة بما في بطنها زجرا رمت به ودفعته.

And the she-camel expelled what was in her belly with a push, she threw it and expelled it.

والزجر: ضرب من السمك عظام صغار الحرشف، والجمع زجور، يتكلم به أهل العراق؛ قال ابن دريد: ولا أحسبه عربيا، والله أعلم.

And al-zajr: is a type of fish with small scales, and its plural is 'zajur', spoken by the people of Iraq; Ibn Duraid said: And I do not think it is Arabic, and Allah knows best.
