When his mother incited him and reviled him, meaning she encouraged him to abandon Islam and reviled him for his Islam.

فجاء عمر ذامرا أي متهددا

And Umar came, 'dhamiran', meaning threateningly.

الذمار: ذمار الرجل وهو كل ما يلزمك حفظه وحياطته وحمايته والدفع عنه وإن ضيعه لزمه اللوم

Al-dhimar: a man's dhimar, which is everything that is incumbent upon you to preserve, guard, protect, and defend; if he neglects it, blame is incumbent upon him.

وفلان حامي الذمار إذا ذمر غضب وحمى

And so-and-so is a protector of the dhimar when he becomes angry and defends.

ألا إن عثمان فضح الذمار

Indeed, Uthman exposed the dhimar.

حبذا يوم الذمار ؛ يريد الحرب لأن الإنسان يقاتل على ما يلزمه حفظه

'What a glorious day of dhimar!' he meant war, because a person fights for what he is obligated to protect.

والقوم يتذامرون أي يحض بعضهم بعضا على الجد في القتال

And the people incite each other, meaning they urge one another to be serious in fighting.

والقائد يذمر أصحابه إذا لامهم وأسمعهم ما كرهوا ليكون أجد لهم في القتال

And the commander incites his companions when he blames them and makes them hear what they dislike, so that they may be more eager for battle.

وهو أن يفعل الرجل فعلا لا يبالغ في نكاية العدو فهو يتذمر أي يلوم نفسه ويعاتبها كي يجد في الأمر

It is when a man does something without exerting himself fully against the enemy, so he blames himself and admonishes himself to be more vigorous in the matter.

وأقبل فلان يتذمر كأنه يلوم نفسه على فائت

And so-and-so came, 'yatadhammaru', as if blaming himself for something missed.

وظل يتذمر على فلان إذا تنكر له وأوعده

And he kept 'yatadhammaru' against so-and-so, meaning he became hostile to him and threatened him.

فخرج يتذمر ؛ أي يعاتب نفسه ويلومها على فوات الذمار

So he went out 'yatadhammaru', meaning he admonished himself and blamed himself for the loss of the dhimar.

ورجل ذمر وذمر وذمر وذمير: شجاع من قوم أذمار

And a man is 'dhamir', 'dhamar', 'dhamir', and 'dhamir': brave from a people of 'adhmar'.

والمذمر: القفا

And 'al-midhmar' is the nape of the neck.

انتهيت يوم بدر إلى أبي جهل وهو صريع فوضعت رجلي في مذمره فقال: يا رويعي الغنم لقد ارتقيت مرتقى صعبا

On the day of Badr, I reached Abu Jahl while he was fallen, and I placed my foot on his 'midhmar', and he said: 'O shepherd of sheep, you have climbed a difficult ascent.'

والمذمر: الذي يدخل يده في حياء الناقة لينظر أذكر جنينها أم أنثى

And 'al-mudhimmir' is one who inserts his hand into the vulva of a she-camel to see if her fetus is male or female.

متى ذمرت قبلي الأرجل؟

حراجيج قود ذمرت في نتاجها، بناحية الشحر الغرير

Lean, well-bred she-camels that 'dhamarat' in their offspring, in the region of al-Shahr al-Ghurayr.

وقد ورد في الحديث ذكر ذمار، بكسر الذال وبعضهم يفتحها، اسم قرية باليمن على مرحلتين من صنعاء، وقيل: هو اسم صنعاء.

And the name Dhimar, with a kasra on the dhal, and some pronounce it with a fatha, is mentioned in the hadith as the name of a village in Yemen, two stages from Sana'a, and it is said to be the name of Sana'a itself.
