وفي حديث الإسراء: قال له موسى، عليه السلام: لقد داورت بني إسرائيل على أدنى من هذا فضعفوا ؛

And in the Hadith of Al-Isrā': Moses, peace be upon him, said to him: You negotiated with the Children of Israel for less than this, and they weakened;

هو فاعلت من دار بالشيء يدور به إذا طاف حوله، ويروى: راودت.

يقول: لا يمكن أن يستقى من الماء القليل إلا بدلاء واسعة الأجواف قصيرة الجوانب لتنغمس في الماء وإن كان قليلا فتمتلئ منه؛

He says: It is not possible to draw water from a small amount of water except with wide-bellied, short-sided buckets so that they sink into the water, even if it is little, and fill from it;

ويقال: هي من المداراة في الأمور، فمن قال هذا فإنه ينصب التاء في موضع الكسر، أي بمداراة الدلاء، ويقول لا يستقى على ما لم يسم فاعله.

And it is said: It is from the midārah in matters. So whoever says this, he pronounces the 'tāʾ' with a kasra, meaning by the persuasion of the buckets, and he says 'lā yustaqā' (passive voice).

ودار: موضع؛ قال ابن مقبل: عاد الأذلة في دار، وكان بها ... هرت الشقاشق ظلامون للجزر

And Dār: a place; Ibn Muqbil said: The humiliated returned to a place, and in it were ... the roaring of the camels, oppressors of the slaughter.

وابن دارة: رجل من فرسان العرب؛ وفي المثل: محا السيف ما قال ابن دارة أجمعا

And Ibn Darrah: a man from the knights of the Arabs; And in the proverb: The sword erased all that Ibn Darrah had said.

والداري: العطار، يقال: إنه نسب إلى دارين فرضة بالبحرين فيها سوق كان يحمل إليها مسك من ناحية الهند؛

And the Dārī: the perfumer, it is said that he is attributed to Darin, a port in Bahrain where there was a market to which musk was brought from the direction of India;

وفي الحديث: مثل الجليس الصالح مثل الداري إن لم يحذك من عطره علقك من ريحه ؛

والداري، بتشديد الياء: العطار، قالوا: لأنه نسب إلى دارين، وهو موضع في البحر يؤتى منه بالطيب؛

And the Dārī, with a shaddah on the 'yāʾ': the perfumer, they said: because he is attributed to Darin, which is a place in the sea from which perfumes are brought;

ومن كلام علي، كرم الله وجهه: كأنه قلع داري أي شراع منسوب إلى هذا الموضع البحري؛

And from the words of Ali, may God honor his face: It is as if he were a Dārī sail, meaning a sail attributed to this maritime location;

قال ابن بري: الشعر للكميت بن معروف، وقال ابن الأعرابي: هو للكميت بن ثعلبة الأكبر؛

Ibn Barrī said: The poetry is by Al-Kumayt bin Maʿrūf, and Ibn Al-Aʿrābī said: It is by Al-Kumayt bin Thaʿlabah the Elder;

قال: وسبب هذا الشعر أن سالم بن دارة هجا فزارة وذكر في هجائه زميل بن أم دينار الفزاري فقال:

He said: And the reason for this poetry is that Sālim bin Darrah satirized Fazārah and mentioned in his satire Zumayl bin Umm Dīnār Al-Fazārī, so he said:

فلا تكثروا فيه الملامة، إنه ... محا السيف ما قال ابن دارة أجمعا

So do not increase blame upon it, for indeed ... the sword erased all that Ibn Darrah had said.

ثم إن زميلا لقي سالم بن دارة في طريق المدينة فقتله وقال:

Then Zumayl met Sālim bin Darrah on the road to Medina and killed him, and said:

أنا زميل قاتل ابن داره، ... وراحض المخزاة عن فزاره

I am Zumayl, the killer of Ibn Darrah, ... and the remover of disgrace from Fazārah.

ويروى: وكاشف السبة عن فزاره . وبعده: ثم جعلت أعقل البكاره جمع بكر. قال: يعقل المقتول بكارة.

And it is narrated: And the revealer of shame from Fazārah. And after it: Then I made the virginity of the young camels to be tied up. He said: The slain man's virginity is tied up.

ومسان وعبد الدار: بطن من قريش النسب إليهم عبدري؛

And Musan and Abd ad-Dar: a clan of Quraysh, to whom the 'Abdari' lineage is traced;

قال سيبويه: وهو من الإضافة التي أخذ فيها من لفظ الأول والثاني كما أدخلت في السبطر حروف السبط؛

Sībawayh said: And it is from the type of idafa (genitive construction) where something is taken from the form of both the first and the second, just as letters of 'al-Sibṭ' were inserted into 'al-Sibṭar';

قال أبو الحسن: كأنهم صاغوا من عبد الدار اسما على صيغة جعفر ثم وقعت الإضافة إليه.

Abū Al-Ḥasan said: It is as if they formed a name from 'Abd ad-Dar in the pattern of Jaʿfar, and then the idafa occurred to it.

ودارين: موضع ترفأ إليه السفن التي فيها المسك وغير ذلك فنسبوا المسك إليه،

And Darin: a place to which ships carrying musk and other things were brought, so they attributed the musk to it,

وسأل كسرى عن دارين: متى كانت؟ فلم يجد أحدا يخبره عنها إلا أنهم قالوا: هي عتيقة بالفارسية فسميت بها.

And Khosrow asked about Darin: When was it? And he found no one to inform him about it except that they said: It is 'ʿatīqah' in Persian, so it was named.

وداران: موضع؛ قال سيبويه: إنما اعتلت الواو فيه لأنهم جعلوا الزيادة في آخره بمنزلة ما في آخره الهاء وجعلوه معتلا كاعتلاله ولا زيادة فيه وإلا فقد كان حكمه أن يصح كما صح الجولان

And Dārān: a place; Sībawayh said: The 'wāw' in it became weak because they made the addition at its end like that which has a 'hāʾ' at its end, and they made it weak like its weakness, and there is no addition in it, otherwise its rule would have been to be sound, just as Al-Jawlān is sound.

وداراء: موضع؛ قال: لعمرك ما ميعاد عينك والبكا ... بداراء إلا أن تهب جنوب

And Dārāʾ: a place; He said: By your life, the appointment of your eye and weeping ... in Dārāʾ is only when the south winds blow.

ودارة: من أسماء الداهية، معرفة لا ينصرف؛ عن كراع، قال: يسألن عن دارة أن تدورا

And Dārah: one of the names of a calamity, definite and indeclinable; From Kurāʿ, he said: They ask about a calamity to turn them around.

ودارة الدور: موضع، وأراهم إنما بالغوا بها، كما تقول: رملة الرمال.

And Dāratu al-Dawr: a place, and it seems to me they exaggerated with it, just as you say: Ramlatu al-Rimāl (a sandy place).
