دعر العود، بالكسر، دعرا، فهو دعر: دخن فلم يتقد وهو الرديء الدخان، ومنه اتخذت الدعارة، وهي الفسق.
The wood smoked, with kasra, a smoky burning, so it was smoky: it produced smoke but did not ignite, and it was of poor smoky quality, and from this is derived 'al-da'aarah', which is fornication.
وعود دعر أي كثير الدخان، وفي التهذيب: عود دعر، وقيل: الدعر ما احترق من حطب أو غيره فطفئ قبل أن يشتد احتراقه، والواحدة دعرة.
And smoky wood means very smoky, and in Al-Tahdhib: smoky wood, and it was said: 'al-da'r' is what burns from wood or other things and extinguishes before its burning intensifies, and the singular is 'da'rah'.
باتت حواطب ليلى يلتمسن لها ... جزل الجذى، غير خوار ولا دعر
Layla's woodcutters spent the night seeking for her... dry logs, not weak nor smoky.

ويقال: هذا زند دعر إذا لم يور؛ وأنشد: مؤتشب يكبو به زند دعر
And it is said: this is an unproductive fire drill if it does not produce sparks; and he recited: A blazing fire is made to falter by an unproductive fire drill.
ويقال للنخلة إذا لم تقبل اللقاح: نخلة داعرة ونخيل مداعير فتزاد تلقيحا وتنحق، قال: وتنحيقها أن يوطأ عسقها حتى يسترخي فذلك دواؤها.
And it is said of a date palm if it does not accept pollination: a barren date palm and barren date palms, so it is pollinated again and 'tanhaq'. He said: and its 'tanhiq' is that its spathe is trodden until it relaxes, and that is its remedy.
ويقال للون الفيل: المدعر؛ قال ثعلب: والمدعر اللون القبيح من جميع الحيوان.
And the color of an elephant is called 'al-mud'ar'; Tha'lab said: and 'al-mud'ar' is the ugly color of all animals.
ودعر الرجل ودعر دعارة: فجر ومجر، وفيه دعارة ودعرة ودعارة.
And a man committed fornication and committed fornication with promiscuity: he committed adultery and fornication, and in him is promiscuity, and fornication, and promiscuity.

And a man who is treacherous and flawed: a traitor who finds fault with his companions; Al-Ja'adi said: May I never find a treacherous one who knows... ancient enmity and malice.
دعر الرجل دعرا إذا كان يسرق ويزني ويؤذي الناس، وهو الداعر.
A man committed 'da'ran' if he steals, commits adultery, and harms people, and he is 'al-da'ir'.
وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه: اللهم ارزقني الغلظة والشدة على أعدائك وأهل الدعارة والنفاق ؛ الدعارة: الفساد والشر.
And in the narration of Umar, may God be pleased with him: O God, grant me harshness and severity against Your enemies and the people of promiscuity and hypocrisy; 'al-da'aarah' means corruption and evil.
وفي الحديث: كان في بني إسرائيل رجل داعر ؛ ويجمع على دعار.
And in the hadith: There was in the Children of Israel a wicked man; and its plural is 'du'aar'.
فأين دعار طيء ، وأراد بهم قطاع الطريق.
So where are the bandits of Tayy, and he meant highwaymen by them.
سألت أبا زيد عن شيء فقال: ما لك ولهذا؟ هو كلام المداعير.
I asked Abu Zayd about something, and he said: What do you have to do with this? It is the talk of the corrupt ones.
ورجل دعرة: فيه ذلك، وحكاه كراع ذعرة، بالذال المعجمة وسكون العين، وذعرة؛ قال: والجمع ذعرات، قال: فأما الداعر، بالدال المهملة، فهو الخبيث.
And a man with a flaw: he has that, and Kurra narrated it as 'dha'arah', with the unpointed dhal and a sukun on the 'ayn', and 'dha'arah'; he said: and the plural is 'dha'araat', he said: as for 'al-da'ir', with the unpointed dal, it means the wicked one.
وداعراً: اسم فحل منجب تنسب إليه الداعرية من الإبل.
And Daa'iran: the name of a fertile stallion from which the Da'iriyyah breed of camels is descended.
