This is a metaphor for the one who is excessive in acquiring worldly possessions and withholds their rightful due. This is because spring sprouts the finest legumes, and livestock consume them excessively due to their pleasant taste, until their stomachs distend beyond capacity, their intestines rupture, and they perish or approach perishing.
وأما قوله إلا آكلة الخضر فإنه مثل للمقتصد وذلك أن الخضر ليس من أحرار البقول وجيدها التي ينبتها الربيع بتوالي أمطاره فتحسن وتنعم
As for his saying, 'except the eater of al-khidr,' it is a metaphor for the one who is moderate. This is because al-khidr is not among the finest and best legumes that spring produces with its successive rains, making them lush and tender.
فضرب آكلة الخضر من المواشي مثلا لمن يقتصر في أخذ الدنيا وجمعها، ولا يحمله الحرص على أخذها بغير حقها، فهو ينجو من وبالها كما نجت آكلة الخضر
Thus, the eater of al-khidr among livestock is a metaphor for one who is content with acquiring and accumulating worldly possessions, and greed does not drive them to take what is not rightfully theirs. They are thus saved from its consequences, just as the eater of al-khidr was saved.
أكلت حتى إذا امتدت خاصرتاها استقبلت عين الشمس فثلطت وبالت؟
She ate until her flanks distended, then she faced the sun and passed loose stool and urinated?
وإنما تحبط الماشية لأنها تمتلئ بطونها ولا تثلط ولا تبول فتنتفخ أجوافها فيعرض لها المرض فتهلك
Livestock perish because their stomachs become full, and they do not pass stool or urinate, causing their insides to swell, leading to illness and death.
والخضرة في شيات الخيل: غبرة تخالط دهمة، وكذلك في الإبل؛ يقال: فرس أخضر، وهو الديزج.
And greenness in the markings of horses is a grayishness mixed with blackness, and similarly in camels; it is said, 'an أخضر horse,' which is al-dayzaj.
إياكم وخضراء الدمن، قيل: وما ذاك يا رسول الله؟ فقال: المرأة الحسناء في منبت السوء ؛ شبهها بالشجرة الناضرة في دمنة البعر، وأكلها داء، وكل ما ينبت في الدمنة وإن كان ناضرا، لا يكون ثامرا
Beware of 'greenness of the dung heaps.' It was asked, 'What is that, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'A beautiful woman from a bad origin.' He likened her to a fresh tree in a dung heap, and eating from it is a disease, and anything that grows in dung, even if fresh, is not fruitful.
فمنظرها حسن أنيق ومنبتها فاسد
Its appearance is beautiful and elegant, but its origin is corrupt.
بيع الثمار وهي خضر لم يبد صلاحها، سمي ذلك مخاضرة لأن المتبايعين تبايعا شيئا أخضر بينهما، مأخوذ من الخضرة.
The sale of fruits while they are green and their ripeness has not yet appeared. This is called mukhadarah because the two parties to the sale traded something green between them, derived from greenness.
والخضار من اللبن مثل السمار الذي مذق بماء كثير حتى اخضر، كما قال الراجز: جاؤوا بضيح، هل رأيت الذئب قط؟ أراد اللبن أنه أورق كلون الذئب لكثرة مائه حتى غلب بياض لون اللبن.
And al-khidar of milk is like al-simar that has been diluted with much water until it turned greenish, as the poet said: 'They brought a pale [milk], have you ever seen a wolf?' He meant the milk, which had taken on a wolf-like hue due to its high water content, overpowering the white color of the milk.
وذهب دمه خضرا مضرا، وذهب دمه بطرا أي ذهب دمه باطلا هدرا، وهو لك خضرا مضرا أي هنيئا مريئا، وخضرا لك ومضرا أي سقيا لك ورعيا؛ وقيل: الخضر الغض والمضر إتباع.
And his blood was shed in vain and harmfully. And his blood was shed arrogantly, meaning his blood was shed unjustly and in vain. And 'khadran mudarran' for you means 'may it be pleasant and wholesome for you,' and 'khadran lak wa mudarran' means 'may it be a refreshing drink and sustenance for you.' It is said that 'al-khidr' means tender, and 'al-mudar' is an appositive.
وفي الحديث: إن الدنيا حلوة خضرة مضرة فمن أخذها بحقها بورك له فيها ؛ ومنه حديث ابن عمر: اغزوا والغزو حلو خضر أي طري محبوب لما ينزل الله من النصر ويسهل من الغنائم.
And in the hadith: 'Indeed, the world is sweet, green, and harmful. Whoever takes it by its right will be blessed in it.' And from the hadith of Ibn Umar: 'Go forth to battle, and battle is sweet and green,' meaning fresh and beloved due to the victory God bestows and the spoils that are made easy.
والخضر: نبي معمر محجوب عن الأبصار.
And Al-Khidr is a long-lived prophet veiled from sight.
روي عن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنه قال: جلس على فروة بيضاء فإذا هي تهتز خضراء ، وقيل: سمي بذلك لأنه كان إذا جلس في موضع قام وتحته روضة تهتز؛ وعن مجاهد: كان إذا صلى في موضع اخضر ما حوله ، وقيل: ما تحته، وقيل: سمي خضرا لحسنه وإشراق وجهه تشبيها بالنبات الأخضر الغض؛ قال: ويجوز في العربية الخضر، كما يقال كبد وكبد، قال الجوهري: وهو أفصح.
It is narrated from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said: 'He sat on a white patch of ground, and it began to sway green.' It is said he was named thus because when he sat in a place, a lush meadow would spring up beneath him. And from Mujahid: 'When he prayed in a place, the area around him turned green,' or 'beneath him.' It is said he was named Al-Khidr for his beauty and radiant face, likened to tender green plants. He said: 'Al-Khidr is permissible in Arabic, just as kabid and kabid are said.' Al-Jawhari said: 'It is more eloquent.'
ويقال للدلو إذا استقي بها زمانا طويلا حتى اخضرت: خضراء؛ قال الراجز: تمطى ملاطاه بخضراء فري، ... وإن تأباه تلقى الأصبحي
And a bucket is called 'khadra' if it has been used for a long time until it turns greenish. The poet said: 'Its rope stretched with a green bucket from Fari, ... and if you refuse it, you will find the Asbahani [bucket].'
وقوله، صلى الله عليه وسلم: ليس في الخضراوات صدقة؛ يعني به الفاكهة الرطبة والبقول، وقياس ما كان على هذا الوزن من الصفات أن لا يجمع هذا الجمع، وإنما يجمع به ما كان اسما لا صفة، نحو صحراء وخنفساء، وإنما جمعه هذا الجمع لأنه قد صار اسما لهذه البقول لا صفة، تقول العرب لهذه البقول: الخضراء، لا تريد لونها؛ وقال ابن سيده: جمعه جمع الأسماء كورقاء وورقاوات وبطحاء وبطحاوات، لأنها صفة غالبة غلبت غلبة الأسماء.
And his saying, peace be upon him: 'There is no charity in al-khadrawat,' meaning fresh fruits and vegetables. The pattern for adjectives of this form is not to be collected in this plural. It is only used for nouns, not adjectives, like sahra' and khunfusa'. It is pluralized this way because it has become a noun for these vegetables, not an adjective. Arabs refer to these vegetables as 'al-khadra', not intending their color. Ibn Sidah said: 'It is pluralized like nouns, such as warqa' and waraqawat, bat'ha' and bat'hawat, because it is a dominant adjective that has become like a noun.'
وفي الحديث: أتي بقدر فيه خضرات؛ بكسر الضاد، أي بقول، واحدها خضر.
And in the hadith: 'A pot containing khadrat was brought,' with a kasra on the dad, meaning vegetables, the singular of which is khidr.
