ولد الناقة من حين يوضع إلى أن يفطم ويفصل، فإذا فصل عن أمه فهو فصيل، وقيل: هو حوار ساعة تضعه أمه خاصة، والجمع أحورة وحيران فيهما.

The young of the she-camel from when it is born until it is weaned and separated; when it is separated from its mother, it is a faṣīl. And it is said: it is a ḥiwār for an hour after its mother gives birth, and the plural is aḥwirah and ḥayrān for both.

اللهم أحر رباعنا أي اجعل رباعنا حيرانا؛

O God, make our camels' young ones return to a lesser state, meaning make our camels' young ones bewildered.

ألا تخافون يوما، قد أظلكم ... فيه حوار، بأيدي الناس، مجرور؟

Do you not fear a day that has overshadowed you... in which there is a camel calf, in the hands of people, dragged along?

فسره ابن الأعرابي فقال: هو يوم مشؤوم عليكم كشؤم حوار ناقة ثمود على ثمود.

Ibn al-A'rabi explained it, saying: it is an ill-omened day for you, like the ill omen of the camel calf of Thamud upon Thamud.

والمحور: الحديدة التي تجمع بين الخطاف والبكرة، وهي أيضا الخشبة التي تجمع المحالة.

And the maḥwar: the iron rod that connects the hook and the pulley wheel, and it is also the wooden piece that joins the pulley.

قال الزجاج: قال بعضهم قيل له محور للدوران لأنه يرجع إلى المكان الذي زال عنه، وقيل: إنما قيل له محور لأنه بدورانه ينصقل حتى يبيض.

Al-Zajjaj said: some said it is called maḥwar for rotation because it returns to the place it left, and it is said: it is called maḥwar because by its rotation it becomes polished until it is white.

ويقال للرجل إذا اضطرب أمره: قد قلقت محاوره؛

And it is said of a man whose affairs are disturbed: his pivots have become loose.

يا مي ما لي قلقت محاوري، ... وصار أشباه الفغا ضرائري؟

O May, why have my affairs become disturbed, ... and my rivals become like the Fugha?

والحديدة التي تدور عليها البكرة يقال لها: محور.

And the iron rod on which the pulley rotates is called: maḥwar.

والمحور: الهنة والحديدة التي يدور فيها لسان الإبزيم في طرف المنطقة وغيرها.

And the maḥwar: the metal piece and the iron rod in which the tongue of the buckle rotates at the end of the belt and elsewhere.

والمحور: الخشبة التي يبسط بها العجين يحور بها الخبز تحويرا.

And the maḥwar: the wooden stick with which the dough is spread, and with which the bread is shaped by turning.

وحور الخبزة تحويرا: هيأها وأدارها ليضعها في الملة.

And he shaped the bread by turning: he prepared it and rotated it to place it in the oven.

وحور عين الدابة: حجر حولها بكي وذلك من داء يصيبها، والكية يقال لها الحوراء، سميت بذلك لأن موضعها يبيض؛

And ḥawwar of the animal's eye: a stony growth around it, and that is from a disease that afflicts it, and the cauterization is called al-ḥawrā', named so because its place becomes white.

وفي الحديث: أنه كوى أسعد بن زرارة على عاتقه حوراء ؛

And in the hadith: that he cauterized Sa'd ibn Zurarah on his shoulder with a ḥawrā'.

وفي رواية: وجد وجعا في رقبته فحوره رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، بحديدة؛

And in another narration: he found pain in his neck, so the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, cauterized it with an iron.

الحوراء: كية مدورة، وهي من حار يحور إذا رجع.

Al-ḥawrā': a round cauterization, and it is from ḥāra yaḥūr if it returns.

وإن إب جهل قال: إن عهدي به وفي ركبتيه حوراء فانظروا ذلك، فنطروا فرأوه ؛

And Abu Jahl said: my last encounter with him was when he had a ḥawrā' on his knees, so look into that, and they looked and saw it.

وإنه لذو حوير أي عداوة ومضادة؛

And he is indeed full of ḥuwair, meaning enmity and antagonism.

والحور: أحد النجوم الثلاثة التي تتبع بنات نعش، وقيل: هو الثالث من بنات نعش الكبرى اللاصق بالنعش.

And al-ḥūrah: deficiency. And al-ḥūrah: return.

طحنت الطاحنة فما أحارت شيئا أي ما ردت شيئا من الدقيق؛

The millstone ground, and it did not return anything, meaning it did not yield any flour.

والحور: الهلكة؛ قال الراجز: في بئر لا حور سرى وما شعر

And al-ḥūr: destruction; and the poet said: in a well of destruction he traveled and did not know.

قال أبو عبيدة: أي في بئر حور، ولا زيادة.

Abu Ubaidah said: meaning in a well of destruction, and no addition.

وفلان حائر بائر: هذا قد يكون من الهلاك ومن الكساد؛

And so-and-so is ḥā'ir bā'ir: this could be from destruction and from stagnation.

والحائر: الراجع من حال كان عليها إلى حال دونها، والبائر: الهالك؛

And al-ḥā'ir: one who returns from a state he was in to a lesser state, and al-bā'ir: the destroyed.

ويقال: حور الله فلانا أي خيبه ورجعه إلى النقص.

And it is said: God made so-and-so ḥūr, meaning He disappointed him and returned him to deficiency.

والحور، بفتح الواو: نبت؛

And al-ḥawr, with a fatha on the waw: a plant.

وما أصبت منه حورا وحورورا أي شيئا.

And I did not obtain from it ḥawran or ḥawrūran, meaning anything.
