Al-ḥazra; and it was said: Al-ḥazra is what people select by hand from the best of their possessions;

وحزرة المال: خياره، وبها سمي الرجل، وحزيرته كذلك،

And the best of wealth is its choicest part, and a man is named after it, and his ḥazīra is likewise,

ويقال: هذا حزرة نفسي أي خير ما عندي، والجمع حزرات، بالتحريك.

And it is said: This is the best of my soul, meaning the best of what I have, and the plural is ḥazrāt, with vowelization.

فقال له: لا تأخذ من حزرات أنفس الناس شيئا، خذ الشارف والبكر ، يعني في الصدقة؛

He said to him: Do not take anything from the best of what people possess, take the old she-camel and the young she-camel, meaning in charity;

الحزرات، جمع حزرة، بسكون الزاي: خيار مال الرجل،

Al-ḥazrāt, the plural of ḥazra, with a sukun on the zay: the choicest of a man's wealth,

سميت حزرة لأن صاحبها لم يزل يحزرها في نفسه كلما رآها، سميت بالمرة الواحدة من الحزر.

It is called ḥazra because its owner never ceased estimating it in his mind whenever he saw it, named after the single instance of estimation.

ولهذا أضيفت إلى الأنفس؛ وأنشد الأزهري: الحزرات حزارت النفس أي هي مما تودها النفس؛

And for this reason it was attributed to the souls; and Al-Azhari recited: Al-ḥazrāt are the choicest of the soul, meaning they are what the soul desires;

وقال آخر: وحزرة القلب خيار المال

And another said: And the best of the heart is the choicest of wealth

الحزرات حزرات القلب، ... اللبن الغزار غير اللحب، حقاقها الجلاد عند اللزب

وفي الحديث: لا تأخذوا حزرات أموال الناس ونكبوا عن الطعام ، ويروى بتقديم الراء، وهو مذكور في موضعه.

And in the Hadith: Do not take the best of people's wealth and turn away from the food, and it is narrated with the ra preceding, and it is mentioned in its place.

وقال أبو سعيد: حزرات الأموال هي التي يؤديها أربابها، وليس كل المال الحزرة، قال: وهي العلائق؛

Abu Sa'id said: The ḥazrāt of wealth are what their owners pay, and not all wealth is ḥazra, he said: and they are the cherished possessions;

وفي مثل العرب: وا حزرتي وأبتغي النوافلا

And among the Arab proverbs: Oh, my estimation, and I seek supererogatory acts

أبو عبيدة: الحزرات نقاوة المال، الذكر والأنثى سواء؛

Abu Ubaidah: Al-ḥazrāt are the pure part of wealth, male and female alike;

يقال: هي حزرة ماله وهي حزرة قلبه؛

It is said: She is the best of his wealth and she is the best of his heart;

وأنشد شمر: ندافع عنهم كل يوم كريهة، ... ونبذل [نبذل] حزرات النفوس ونصبر

And Shamir recited: We defend them from every hardship each day, ... And we expend the best of souls and endure

And among the Arab proverbs: The sting reached and it was estimated; it is said of a matter when it reaches its limit and is full.

ابن شميل عن المنتجع: الحازر دقيق الشعير وله ريح ليس بطيب.

Ibn Shammil from Al-Muntaji': Al-ḥāzir is barley flour and it has an unpleasant smell.

والحزرة: موت الأفاضل.

And al-ḥazra: the death of the eminent.

والحزورة: الرابية الصغيرة، والجمع الحزاور، وهو تل صغير.

And al-ḥazūra: the small hillock, and the plural is al-ḥazāwir, and it is a small hill.

الأزهري: الحزور المكان الغليظ؛ وأنشد:

Al-Azhari: Al-ḥazūr is the rough place; and he recited:

في عوسج الوادي ورضم الحزور

In the acacia of the valley and the stones of the rough ground

وأزرت ... به قامسات من رعان وحزور

And it was hindered... by leaping ones from the heights and rough places

ووجه حازر: عابس باسر.

And a ḥāzir face: frowning, scowling.

والحزور والحزور، بتشديد الواو: الغلام الذي قد شب وقوي؛

And al-ḥazūr and al-ḥazūr, with a shadda on the waw: the boy who has grown up and become strong;

لن يعدم المطي مني مسفرا، ... شيخا بجالا وغلاما حزورا

The mounts will not lack from me a traveler, ... an old man of stature and a strong youth

لن يبعثوا شيخا ولا حزورا ... بالفاس، إلا الأرقب المصدرا

They will not send an old man nor a strong youth ... with a pickaxe, except the watchful one who leads.

والجمع حزاور وحزاورة، زادوا الهاء لتأنيث الجمع.

And the plural is ḥazāwir and ḥazāwira, they added the ha for the feminine plural.

والحزور: الذي قد انتهى إدراكه؛

And al-ḥazūr: he whose maturity has been reached;

إن حري حزور حزابيه، ... كوطبة الظبية فوق الرابيه

Indeed, my companion is a strong youth of his companions, ... like the leaping of a doe upon the hillock

قد جاء منه غلمة ثمانيه، ... وبقيت ثقبته كما هيه

Eight young men have come from him, ... and his remaining one remains as it is.

الجوهري: الحزور الغلام إذا اشتد وقوي وخدم؛

Al-Jawhari: Al-ḥazūr is the boy when he becomes strong, powerful, and serves;

وقال يعقوب: هو الذي كاد يدرك ولم يفعل.

And Ya'qub said: He is one who almost reached maturity but did not.

كنا مع رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، غلمانا حزاورة ؛

We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, as young boys approaching maturity;

هو الذي قارب البلوغ، والتاء لتأنيث الجمع؛

He is one who approached puberty, and the ta is for the feminine plural;

كنت غلاما حزورا فصدت أرنبا ، ولعله شبهه بحزورة الأرض وهي الرابية الصغيرة.

I was a strong youth and hunted a rabbit, and perhaps he likened him to the ḥazūra of the earth, which is the small hillock.

يقال للغلام إذا راهق ولم يدرك بعد حزور، وإذا أدرك وقوي واشتد، فهو حزور أيضا؛

It is said of a boy when he approaches puberty and has not yet reached it, he is ḥazūr, and when he reaches maturity, becomes strong and powerful, he is also ḥazūr;

نزع الحزور بالرشاء المحصد

The strong one pulled with the well-rope that was cut.

أراد البالغ القوي.

He meant the mature, strong one.

وقال أبو حاتم في الأضداد الحزور الغلام إذا اشتد وقوي؛

And Abu Hatim said in the opposites: Al-ḥazūr is the boy when he becomes strong and powerful;

والحزور: الضعيف من الرجال؛

And al-ḥazūr: the weak among men;

وما أنا، إن دافعت مصراع بابه، ... بذي صولة فان، ولا بحزور

And I am not, if I defend the door's leaf, ... one with a fleeting attack, nor weak.

إن أحق الناس بالمنيه ... حزور ليست له ذريه

Indeed, the most deserving of people of death ... is a weakling who has no offspring

أراد بالحزور هاهنا رجلا بالغا ضعيفا؛

He meant by al-ḥazūr here a mature, weak man;

الحزور، عن العرب، الصغير غير البالغ؛

Al-ḥazūr, according to the Arabs, is the small one who has not reached puberty;

ومن العرب من يجعل الحزور البالغ القوي البدن الذي قد حمل السلاح؛

And among the Arabs, some consider al-ḥazūr to be the mature, physically strong one who has carried weapons;

والقول هو هذا.

And this is the correct view.

ابن الأعرابي: الحزرة النبقة المرة، وتصغر حزيرة.

Ibn al-A'rabi: Al-ḥazra is the bitter nabqa, and its diminutive is ḥazīra.

أنه سمع رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وهو واقف بالحزورة من مكة ؛

That he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, while he was standing at Al-Ḥazūra in Mecca;

هو موضع عند باب الحناطين وهو بوزن قسورة.

It is a place near the gate of the grain merchants and it is on the pattern of qaswara.

الناس يشددون الحزورة والحديبية، وهما مخففتان.

People pronounce Al-Ḥazūra and Al-Ḥudaybiyya with a shadda, while they are pronounced with a tanfīf (without shadda).
