الثمر: حمل الشجر.
The fruit: the produce of the tree.
وأنواع المال والولد: ثمرة القلب.
And types of wealth and offspring: the fruit of the heart.
إذا مات ولد العبد قال الله تعالى لملائكته: قبضتم ثمرة فؤاده، فيقولون: نعم ؛ قيل للولد ثمرة لأن الثمرة ما ينتجه الشجر والولد ينتجه الأب.
When the servant's child dies, Allah the Almighty says to His angels: You have taken the fruit of his heart, and they say: Yes; the child is called a fruit because the fruit is what the tree produces and the child is produced by the father.
ما تسأل عمن ذبلت بشرته وقطعت ثمرته ، يعني نسله، وقيل: انقطاع شهوته للجماع.
What do you ask about one whose skin has withered and whose lineage has been cut off, meaning his offspring, and it was said: his desire for intercourse has ceased.
فأعطاه صفقة يده وثمرة قلبه أي خالص عهده.
So he gave him the grasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, meaning his sincere covenant.
أنه أخذ بثمرة لسانه أي طرفه الذي يكون في أسفله.
That he took hold of the tip of his tongue, meaning its lower extremity.
والثمر: أنواع المال، وجمع الثمر ثمار، وثمر جمع الجمع، وقد يجوز أن يكون الثمر جمع ثمرة كخشبة وخشب وأن لا يكون جمع ثمار لأن باب خشبة وخشب أكثر من باب رهان ورهن؛ قال ابن سيده: أعني أن جمع الجمع قليل في كلامهم؛ وحكى سيبويه في الثمر ثمرة، وجمعها ثمر كسمرة وسمر؛ قال: ولا تكسر لقلة فعلة في كلامهم، ولم يحك الثمرة أحد غيره.
And 'al-thamar': types of wealth, and the plural of 'al-thamara' is 'thimar', and 'thamar' is the plural of the plural, and it is possible that 'al-thamar' is the plural of 'thamara' like 'khashaba' and 'khashab', and not the plural of 'thimar' because the pattern 'khashaba' and 'khashab' is more common than 'rihan' and 'rihn'; Ibn Sidah said: I mean that the plural of the plural is rare in their speech; Sibawayh narrated for 'al-thamar' 'thamara', and its plural is 'thamar' like 'samara' and 'samar'; he said: and it is not broken because 'fa'ala' is rare in their speech, and no one narrated 'al-thamara' except him.
وأثمر الشجر: خرج ثمره.
And the tree bore fruit: its fruit appeared.
وثمر الشجر وأثمر: صار فيه الثمر، وقيل: الثامر الذي بلغ أوان أن يثمر.
And the tree bore fruit and produced fruit: fruit appeared on it, and it was said: 'al-thāmir' is that which has reached the time to bear fruit.
والمثمر: الذي فيه ثمر، وقيل: ثمر مثمر لم ينضج، وثامر قد نضج.
And 'al-muthmir': that which has fruit on it, and it was said: unripe fruit is 'muthmir', and ripe fruit is 'thāmir'.
أثمر الشجر إذا طلع ثمره قبل أن ينضج، فهو مثمر، وقد ثمر الثمر يثمر، فهو ثامر، وشجر ثامر إذا أدرك ثمره.
The tree bore fruit when its fruit appeared before it ripened, so it is 'muthmir', and the fruit ripened, it ripens, and it is 'thāmir', and a tree is 'thāmir' when its fruit is ripe.
لا قطع في ثمر ولا كثر ؛ الثمر: هو الرطب في رأس النخلة فإذا كبر فهو التمر، والكثر: الجمار؛ ويقع الثمر على كل الثمار ويغلب على ثمر النخل.
There is no cutting for fruit nor for pith; 'al-thamar': it is the fresh date at the top of the palm tree, and when it grows it is 'al-tamr', and 'al-kathr': the pith; and 'al-thamar' applies to all fruits and is predominantly used for the fruit of the palm.
زاكيا نبتها ثامرا فرعها ؛ يقال: شجر ثامر إذا أدرك ثمره؛ وقوله أنشده ابن الأعرابي: والخمر ليست من أخيك، ولكن ... قد، تغر بثامر الحلم قال: ثامره تامه كثامر الثمرة، وهو النضيج منه، ويروى: بآمن الحلم، وقيل: الثامر كل شيء خرج ثمره، والمثمر: الذي بلغ أن يجنى؛ هذه عن أبي حنيفة؛ وأنشد: تجتني ثامر جداده، ... بين فرادى برم أو تؤام وقد أخطأ في هذه الرواية لأنه قال بين فرادى فجعل النصف الأول من المديد والنصف الثاني من السريع، وإنما الرواية من فرادى وهي معروفة.
Its plant growing luxuriantly, its branch bearing fruit; it is said: a tree is 'thāmir' when its fruit is ripe; and the saying narrated by Ibn al-A'rabi: And wine is not from your brother, but ... it may deceive with the ripe fruit of wisdom. He said: its ripe fruit is complete like the ripe fruit of the fruit, and it is the ripe one of it, and it is narrated: with safe wisdom, and it was said: 'al-thāmir' is everything whose fruit has appeared, and 'al-muthmir': that which has reached the stage to be harvested; this is from Abu Hanifa; and he recited: Harvesting its ripe fruit, ... singly or in pairs. And he erred in this narration because he said 'between singly' making the first half of the extended meter and the second half of the rapid meter, but the narration is from 'faraadi' which is known.
والثمرة: الشجرة؛ عن ثعلب.
And 'al-thamara': the tree; according to Tha'lab.
أرض ثميرة كثيرة الثمر، وشجرة ثميرة ونخلة ثميرة مثمرة؛ وقيل: هما الكثيرا الثمر، والجمع ثمر.
Fertile land with much fruit, and a fertile tree and a fertile, fruit-bearing palm tree; and it was said: they are abundant in fruit, and the plural is 'thamar'.
وإذا كثر حمل الشجرة أو ثمر الأرض فهي ثمراء.
And when the tree's load is abundant or the land's fruit is abundant, it is 'tharmā'.
تظل على الثمراء منها جوارس، ... مراضيع صهب الريش، زغب رقابها
They rest upon the fruit-bearing trees, ... young bees with reddish wings, their necks downy.
وثمر النبات: نفض نوره وعقد ثمره؛ رواه ابن سيده عن أبي حنيفة.
And the fruiting of the plant: shedding its blossom and setting its fruit; narrated by Ibn Sidah from Abu Hanifa.
والثمر: الذهب والفضة؛ حكاه الفارسي يرفعه إلى مجاهد في قوله عز وجل: وكان له ثمر ؛ فيمن قرأ به، قال: وليس ذلك بمعروف في اللغة.
And 'al-thamar': gold and silver; narrated by al-Farsi, tracing it to Mujahid regarding the Almighty's saying: 'And he had wealth'; for those who read it as such, he said: and this is not common in the language.
وكان له ثمر ؛ قال: ما كان في القرآن من ثمر فهو مال وما كان من ثمر فهو من الثمار.
And he had wealth; he said: whatever is mentioned as 'thamar' in the Quran is wealth, and whatever is mentioned as 'thamar' is from the fruits.
مفتوح جمع ثمرة، ومن قرأ ثمر قال: من كل المال، قال: فأخبرت بذلك يونس فلم يقبله كأنهما كانا عنده سواء.
Opened, the plural of 'thamara', and whoever reads 'thamar' said: from all wealth, he said: so I informed Yunus of that and he did not accept it as if they were equal in his view.
وسمعت أبا الهيثم يقول ثمرة ثم ثمر ثم ثمر جمع الجمع، وجمع الثمر أثمار مثل عنق وأعناق.
And I heard Abu al-Haytham say 'thamara' then 'thamar' then 'thamar' is the plural of the plural, and the plural of 'thamar' is 'athmar' like 'unuq' and 'a'naq'.
والثمرة واحدة الثمر والثمرات، والثمر المال المثمر، يخفف ويثقل.
And 'al-thamara' is one 'al-thamar' and 'al-thamarāt', and 'al-thamar' is the fruitful wealth, pronounced with short and long vowels.
وكان له ثمر، وفسره بأنواع الأموال.
And he had wealth, and he interpreted it as types of wealth.
وثمر ماله: نماه.
And his wealth grew: he increased it.
ثمر الله مالك أي كثره.
May Allah make your wealth grow, meaning make it abundant.
وأثمر الرجل: كثر ماله.
And the man became wealthy: his money increased.
والعقل المثمر: عقل المسلم، والعقل العقيم: عقل الكافر.
And the fruitful intellect: the intellect of a Muslim, and the barren intellect: the intellect of a disbeliever.
والثامر: نور الحماض، وهو أحمر؛ قال: من علق كثامر الحماض
And 'al-thāmir': the flower of the Hamad, which is red; he said: like the red flower of the Hamad.
أراد به حمرة ثمره عند إيناعه، كما قال: كأنما علق بالأسدان ... يانع حماض وأرجوان
He meant by it the redness of its fruit when it ripens, as he said: As if hung on the two lions ... ripe Hamad and crimson.
قل خيرا تغنم أو أمسك عن سوء تسلم؛ قال شمر: يريد أنه أخذ بطرف لسانه؛ وكذلك ثمرة السوط طرفه.
Say good and gain, or refrain from evil and be safe; Shammir said: he means he took hold of the tip of his tongue; and likewise the 'thamara' of the whip is its tip.
ثمرة الرأس جلدته.
The 'thamara' of the head is its skin.
أنه دق ثمرة السوط حتى أخذت له ؛ مخففة، يعني طرف السوط.
That he beat the tip of the whip until it was taken for him; softened, meaning the tip of the whip.
وثمر السياط: عقد أطرافها.
And the fruiting of whips: tying their ends.
فأتى بسوط لم تقطع ثمرته أي طرفه، وإنما دق عمر، رضي الله عنه، ثمرة السوط لتلين تخفيفا على الذي يضرب به.
So a whip was brought whose tip was not cut off, meaning its end, and Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, beat the tip of the whip to soften it as a relief for the one being whipped.
والثامر: اللوبياء؛ عن أبي حنيفة، وكلاهما اسم.
And 'al-thāmir': the lupine; from Abu Hanifa, and both are names.
والثمير من اللبن: ما لم يخرج زبده؛ وقيل: الثمير والثميرة الذي ظهر زبده؛ وقيل: الثميرة أن يظهر الزبد قبل أن يجتمع ويبلغ إناه من الصلوح؛ وقد ثمر السقاء تثميرا وأثمر، وقيل: المثمر من اللبن الذي ظهر عليه تحبب وزبد وذلك عند الرؤوب.
And 'al-thameer' (milk) is that from which the butterfat has not yet emerged; and it was said: 'al-thameer' and 'al-thameera' is that from which the butterfat has appeared; and it was said: 'al-thameera' is when the butterfat appears before it gathers and reaches its stage of readiness; and the skin bag churned and produced froth, and it was said: 'al-muthmir' (milk) is that which has begun to show lumps and froth, which occurs when it is curdling.
وأثمر الزبد: اجتمع؛ الأصمعي: إذا أدرك ليمخض فظهر عليه تحبب وزبد، فهو المثمر.
And the froth gathered; Al-Asma'i said: when it is ready to be churned and shows lumps and froth, it is 'al-muthmir'.
هو الثمير، وكان إذا كان مخض فرؤي عليه أمثال الحصف في الجلد ثم يجتمع فيصير زبدا، وما دامت صغارا فهو ثمير؛ وقد ثمر السقاء وأثمر، وإن لبنك لحسن الثمر، وقد أثمر مخاضك؛ قال أبو منصور: وهي ثميرة اللبن أيضا.
It is 'al-thameer', and when it was churned and lumps like pebbles appeared on the skin, then it gathered and became froth, and as long as they are small, it is 'thameer'; and the skin bag churned and produced froth, and indeed your milk has good froth, and your churning has produced froth; Abu Mansur said: and it is also 'thameerat al-laban'.
هل عندك قرى؟ قالت: نعم، خبز خمير ولبن ثمير وحيس جمير ؛ الثمير: الذي قد تحبب زبده وظهرت ثميرته أي زبده.
Do you have any hospitality? She said: Yes, leavened bread, frothy milk, and 'hais' with collected fat; 'al-thameer': that from which the butterfat has become lumpy and its froth has appeared, meaning its butterfat.
وإني لمن عبس، وإن قال قائل ... على رغمهم: ما أثمر ابن ثمير
And I am from 'Abas, even if someone says ... despite their will: the moonlit night has not produced (fruit).
