مشافرها في ماء مزن وباقل
Its lips in rainwater and verdure.
وأراد ذو الرمة بالمتثلم حوضا قد تهدم أكثره لقدمه وقلة عهد الناس به
And Dhu al-Rummah meant by al-mutathallim a basin whose greater part had collapsed due to its age and people's infrequent use of it.
إن تك جلمود بصر لا أوبسه
If it is a hard stone, I will not move it.
أوقد عليه فأحميه فينصدع
It is ignited and heated until it cracks.
البصرة والكذان، كلاهما: الحجارة التي ليست بصلبة
Al-Basrah and al-Kadhdhan, both are stones that are not hard.
وأرض فلان بصرة، بضم الصاد، إذا كانت حمراء طيبة
And so-and-so's land is basrah (with damma on the sad) if it is red and good.
وأرض بصرة إذا كانت فيها حجارة تقطع حوافر الدواب
And a basrah land if it has stones that cut the hooves of animals.
والبصر الأرض الطيبة الحمراء
And al-basar is the good, red land.
والبصرة والبصرة والبصرة: أرض حجارتها جص، قال: وبها سميت البصرة، والبصرة أعم، والبصرة كأنها صفة، والنسب إلى البصرة بصري وبصري، الأولى شاذة؛ قال عذافر: بصرية تزوجت بصريا
And al-Basrah, al-Basrah, and al-Basrah: land whose stones are gypsum. He said: And Basra was named after it. Al-Basrah is more general, and al-Basrah is like an adjective. The nisbah to Basra is Basri and Basri; the first is irregular. 'Adhafir said: A Basri woman married a Basri man.
وبصر القوم تبصيرا: أتوا البصرة
And the people's basara, tabseeran: they came to Basra.
أخبر من لاقيت أني مبصر
Inform whomever you meet that I am seeing.
وكائن ترى قبلي من الناس بصرا
And how many people you see before me have seen.
وفي البصرة ثلاث لغات: بصرة وبصرة وبصرة، واللغة العالية البصرة
And in Basra there are three pronunciations: Basrah, Basrah, and Basrah, and the elevated pronunciation is Basrah.
البصر والبصرة الحجارة البراقة
Al-basar and al-basrah are glittering stones.
البصرة: الطين العلك
Al-basrah: sticky clay.
والبصر الطين العلك الجيد الذي فيه حصى
And al-basar is the good, sticky clay that contains gravel.
والبصيرة: الترس، وقيل: هو ما استطال منه، وقيل: هو ما لزق بالأرض من الجسد، وقيل: هو قدر فرسن البعير منه، وقيل: هو ما استدل به على الرمية
And al-baseerah: the shield. And it is said: it is what extends from it. And it is said: it is what sticks to the ground from the body. And it is said: it is the size of a camel's hoof. And it is said: it is what one infers the target from.
ويقال: هذه بصيرة من دم، وهي الجدية منها على الأرض
And it is said: this is a baseerah of blood, and it is the clot of it on the ground.
والبصيرة: مقدار الدرهم من الدم
And al-baseerah: the amount of a dirham of blood.
والبصيرة: الثأر
And al-baseerah: vengeance.
وفي الحديث: فأمر به فبصر رأسه أي قطع
And in the hadith: So he was ordered and his head was basara, meaning cut.
يقال: بصره بسيفه إذا قطعه
It is said: he basara him with his sword if he cut him.
والبصيرة من الدم ما لم يسل، وقيل: هو الدفعة منه، وقيل: البصيرة دم البكر؛ قال: راحوا، بصائرهم على أكتافهم، ... وبصيرتي يعدو بها عتد وأى
And al-baseerah from blood is what has not flowed. And it is said: it is a gush of it. And it is said: al-baseerah is the blood of a virgin. He said: They departed, their blood vengeance on their shoulders... and my vengeance, he runs with it.
يقول: تركوا دم أبيهم خلفهم ولم يثأروا به وطلبته أنا؛ وفي الصحاح: وأنا طلبت ثأري
He means: they left their father's blood behind them and did not avenge it, and I sought it; and in Al-Sihah: And I sought my vengeance.
وكان أبو عبيدة يقول: البصيرة في هذا البيت الترس أو الدرع، وكان يرويه: حملوا بصائرهم؛ وقال ابن الأعرابي: راحوا بصائرهم يعني ثقل دمائهم على أكتافهم لم يثأروا بها
And Abu Ubaydah used to say: Al-baseerah in this verse is the shield or the armor, and he used to recite it as: they carried their shields. And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: They departed with their basair, meaning the weight of their blood on their shoulders, not having avenged it.
والبصيرة: الدية
And al-baseerah: the blood money.
والبصائر: الديات في أول البيت، قال أخذوا الديات فصارت عارا، وبصيرتي أي ثأري قد حملته على فرسي لأطالب به فبيني وبينهم فرق
And al-basa'ir: the blood monies in the first part of the verse. He said: They took the blood money, so it became a shame. And my baseerah, meaning my vengeance, I have carried it on my horse to demand it, so between me and them is a separation.
البصيرة من الدم ما كان على الأرض
Al-baseerah from blood is what was on the ground.
والجدية: ما لزق بالجسد
And al-jiddiyyah: what sticks to the body.
والبصيرة شيء من الدم يستدل به على الرمية
And al-baseerah is something of blood from which one infers the target.
وفي حديث الخوارج: وينظر في النصل فلا يرى بصيرة أي شيئا من الدم يستدل به على الرمية ويستبينها به
And in the hadith of the Khawarij: And he looks at the blade and sees no baseerah, meaning any trace of blood from which one infers the target and clarifies it.
وفي اليد اليمنى لمستعيرها ... شهباء، تروي الريش من بصيرها
And in the right hand of its borrower... a white one, it quenches the feathers from its baseerah.
يجوز أن يكون جمع البصيرة من الدم كشعيرة وشعير ونحوها، ويجوز أن يكون أراد من بصيرتها فحذف الهاء ضرورة، كما ذهب إليه بعضهم في قول أبي ذؤيب: ألا ليت شعري، هل تنظر خالد ... عيادي على الهجران، أم هو يائس؟
It is permissible that it is the plural of baseerah from blood, like sha'eerah and sha'eer, and the like. And it is permissible that he intended from its baseerah and omitted the ha' out of necessity, as some have gone to in the saying of Abu Dhu'ayb: Alas, I wish I knew, does Khalid look... at my visits during estrangement, or is he despairing?
ويجوز أن يكون البصير لغة في البصيرة، كقولك حق وحقة وبياض وبياضة
And it is permissible that al-baseer is a variant pronunciation for al-baseerah, as you say haqq and haqqah, and bayad and bayadah.
والبصيرة: الدرع، وكل ما لبس جنة بصيرة
And al-baseerah: the armor. And everything worn as protection is a baseerah.
والبصيرة: الترس، وكل ما لبس من السلاح فهو بصائر السلاح
And al-baseerah: the shield. And everything worn of weapons is the weapons' basa'ir.
والباصر: قتب صغير مستدير مثل به سيبويه وفسره السيرافي عن ثعلب، وهي البواصر
And al-basir: a small, round dung cake, like Sibawayh mentioned and Al-Sairafi explained from Tha'lab, and it is al-bawaser.
وأبو بصير: الأعشى، على التطير
And Abu Basir: Al-A'sha, due to superstition.
وبصير: اسم رجل
And Basir: a man's name.
وبصرى: قرية بالشام، صانها الله تعالى؛ قال الشاعر: ولو أعطيت من ببلاد بصرى ... وقنسرين من عرب وعجم
And Busra: a village in the Levant, may God protect it. The poet said: And if I were given from the lands of Busra... and Qinnasrin, from Arabs and non-Arabs.
وتنسب إليها السيوف البصرية؛ وقال: يفلون بالقلع البصري هامهم
And the Basran swords are attributed to it. And he said: They cleave their heads with the Basran sword.
وأنشد الجوهري للحصين بن الحمام المري: صفائح بصرى أخلصتها قيونها، ... ومطردا من نسج داود محكما
And Al-Jawhari recited for Al-Husayn ibn Al-Hammam Al-Murri: Basran plates, their smiths have refined them... and a mail shirt, firmly woven by David.
والنسب إليها بصري؛ قال ابن دريد: أحسبه دخيلا
And the nisbah to it is Basri; Ibn Duraid said: I think it is an introduced word.
والأباصر: موضع معروف؛ وفي حديث كعب: تمسك النار يوم القيامة حتى تبص كأنها متن إهالة أي تبرق ويتلألأ ضوؤها
And Al-Abaser: a known place. And in the hadith of Ka'b: The fire will hold on the Day of Resurrection until it shines like the fat of melted fat, meaning its light will glitter and sparkle.
