البتر: استئصال الشيء قطعا.
Al-batr: Severing something by cutting.
البتر قطع الذنب ونحوه إذا استأصله.
Al-batr is cutting off a tail and the like when it is completely severed.
بترت الشيء بترا: قطعته قبل الإتمام.
I cut something off (batartu shay'an batran): I cut it before completion.
والانبتار: الانقطاع.
And al-inbitar: is the cessation or being cut off.
وهي التي قطع ذنبها.
And it is that whose tail was cut off.
وقيل كل قطع بتر؛ بتره يبتره بترا فانبتر وتبتر.
And it is said that every cut is a batr; he cut it (batara-hu), it is cut (yabtiru-hu) with a cutting (batran), so it became cut off (inbatara) and it became cut off (tabattara).
وسيف باتر وبتور وبتار: قطاع.
And a sword that is batir, batur, and battar: is cutting.
والباتر: السيف القاطع.
And al-batir: is the cutting sword.
والأبتر: المقطوع الذنب من أي موضع كان من جميع الدواب؛ وقد أبتره فبتر، وذنب أبتر.
And al-abtar: is the one whose tail is cut off from wherever it may be from all animals; and he made it tailless (abtarahu) so it became tailless (batara), and a tailless tail (dhanabun abtar).
وفي الحديث: أنه نهى عن البتيراء ؛ هو أن يوتر بركعة واحدة، وقيل: هو الذي شرع في ركعتين فأتم الأولى وقطع الثانية:
And in the Hadith: that he forbade al-batti'ra; it is to perform Witr with one rak'ah, and it was said: it is that which begins two rak'ahs and completes the first and cuts off the second:
ما هذه البتراء؟
What is this battra' (incomplete prayer/speech)?
وكل أمر انقطع من الخير أثره، فهو أبتر.
And every matter whose trace of good is cut off, it is abtar (lacking good).
والأبتران: العير والعبد، سميا أبترين لقلة خيرهما.
And al-abtarān: are the wild ass and the slave, they are named abtarayn due to their lack of goodness.
وقد أبتره الله أي صيره أبتر.
And Allah made him abtar (childless/lacking good) meaning He made him abtar.
وخطبة بتراء إذا لم يذكر الله تعالى فيها ولا صلي على النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم؛ وخطب زياد خطبته البتراء:
And a battra' sermon is when Allah the Almighty is not mentioned in it, nor is the Prophet, peace be upon him, blessed; and Ziyad delivered his battra' sermon:
قيل لها البتراء لأنه لم يحمد الله تعالى فيها ولم يصل على النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم.
It was called battra' because Allah the Almighty was not praised in it, nor was the Prophet, peace be upon him, blessed.
كان لرسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، درع يقال لها البتراء، سميت بذلك لقصرها.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had a coat of mail called Al-Batrā', it was named so due to its shortness.
والأبتر من الحيات: الذي يقال له الشيطان قصير الذنب لا يراه أحد إلا فر منه، ولا تبصره حامل إلا أسقطت، وإنما سمي بذلك لقصر ذنبه كأنه بتر منه.
And al-abtar among snakes: is that which is called the devil, short-tailed, whom no one sees except they flee from it, and no pregnant woman sees it except she miscarries, and it was only named so due to the shortness of its tail as if it were cut off from it.
كل أمر ذي بال لا يبدأ فيه بحمد الله فهو أبتر ؛ أي أقطع.
Every important matter that does not begin with the praise of Allah is abtar; meaning cut off.
والبتر: القطع.
And al-batr: is cutting.
والأبتر من عروض المتقارب: الرابع من المثمن، كقوله: خليلي عوجا على رسم دار، ... خلت من سليمى ومن ميه
And al-abtar in the meter of al-Mutaqārib: is the fourth of the Muthmann, like his saying: My two companions, turn aside at the ruins of a dwelling, ... devoid of Sulayma and of her water.
وسماه قطرب البيت الرابع من المديد، وهو قوله: إنما الذلفاء ياقوتة، ... أخرجت من كيس دهقان [دهقان] سماه أبتر.
And Qutrub named the fourth verse of al-Madid as battar, which is his saying: Indeed, the slender one is a ruby, ... taken out of a dehqan's purse, he called it abtar.
إن شانئك هو الأبتر ؛ نزلت في العاصي بن وائل وكان دخل على النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وهو جالس فقال: هذا الأبتر أي هذا الذي لا عقب له، فقال الله جل ثناؤه: إن شانئك يا محمد هو الأبتر أي المنقطع العقب؛ وجائز أن يكون هو المنقطع عنه كل خير.
Indeed, your enemy is al-abtar; it was revealed concerning Al-'Asi ibn Wa'il, who entered upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, while he was sitting, and said: This one is al-abtar, meaning this one who has no offspring, so Allah, Glorified is His name, said: Indeed, your enemy, O Muhammad, is al-abtar, meaning one whose lineage is cut off; and it is permissible that it means one from whom all good is cut off.
أنت حبر أهل المدينة وسيدهم؟ قال: نعم، قالوا: ألا ترى هذا الصنيبر الأبيتر من قومه؟ يزعم أنه خير منا ونحن أهل الحجيج وأهل السدانة وأهل السقاية؟ قال: أنتم خير منه، فأنزلت: إن شانئك هو الأبتر ، وأنزلت: ألم تر إلى الذين أوتوا نصيبا من الكتاب يؤمنون بالجبت والطاغوت ويقولون للذين كفروا هؤلاء أهدى من الذين آمنوا سبيلا.
You are the scholar of the people of Medina and their master? He said: Yes. They said: Do you not see this insignificant one, the abtar of his people? He claims he is better than us, and we are the people of pilgrimage, the custodians of the Ka'bah, and the providers of water? He said: You are better than him. So it was revealed: Indeed, your enemy is al-abtar, and it was revealed: Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They believe in Jibt and Taghut and say of those who disbelieve: These are more rightly guided than those who believe.
الأبتر المنبتر الذي لا ولد له؛ قيل: لم يكن يومئذ ولد له، قال: وفيه نظر لأنه ولد له قبل البعث والوحي إلا أن يكون أراد لم يعش له ولد ذكر.
Al-abtar is the one cut off who has no child; it was said: he had no child at that time. He said: And there is consideration in this because he had children before the mission and revelation, unless he meant that no male child lived for him.
والأبتر: المعدم.
And al-abtar: the destitute.
والأبتر: الخاسر.
And al-abtar: the loser.
والأبتر: الذي لا عروة له من المزاد والدلاء.
And al-abtar: is that which has no handle from waterskins and buckets.
وتبتر لحمه: انمار.
And his flesh became lean (tabattara lahmuhu): it became thin.
وبتر رحمه يبترها بترا: قطعها.
And he cut his kinship (batera rahimahu) he cuts it (yabtaruha) with a cutting (batran): he severed it.
والأباتر، بالضم: الذي يبتر رحمه ويقطعها؛ قال أبو الرئيس المازني واسمه عبادة بن طهفة يهجو أبا حصن السلمي: لئيم نزت في أنفه خنزوانة، ... على قطع ذي القربى أحذ أباتر
And al-abāter, with dammah: is he who cuts off his kinship and severs it; Abu al-Ra'is al-Mazini, whose name is 'Ubādah ibn Ṭahfah, said in satire of Abu Ḥiṣn al-Sulami: A base person, a boar's snout has entered his nose, ... towards severing the relative, a swift abāter.
وقيل: الأباتر القصير كأنه بتر عن التمام؛ وقيل؛ الأباتر الذي لا نسل له؛ وقوله أنشده ابن الأعرابي: شديد وكاء البطن ضب ضغينة، ... على قطع ذي القربى أحذ أباتر قال: أباتر يسرع في بتر ما بينه وبين صديقه.
And it was said: al-abāter is the short one as if he were cut off from completeness; and it was said: al-abāter is he who has no offspring; and his saying, which Ibn al-A'rābi recited: Strong of belly-binding, a lizard of malice, ... towards severing the relative, a swift abāter. He said: Abāter is one who hastens in cutting off what is between him and his friend.
وأبتر الرجل إذا أعطى ومنع.
And a man is abtar if he gives and withholds.
والحجة البتراء: النافذة؛ عن ثعلب.
And al-ḥujjah al-battra': the decisive one; from Tha'lab.
والبتيراء: الشمس.
And al-battayrā': the sun.
حين تبهر البتيراء الأرض ؛ أراد حين تنبسط الشمس على وجه الأرض وترتفع.
When al-battayrā' dazzles the earth; he meant when the sun spreads over the face of the earth and rises.
وأبتر الرجل: صلى الضحى، وهو من ذلك.
And a man performs abtar: he prays Duha, and it is from that.
تقضب الشمس أي تخرج شعاعها كالقضبان.
The sun 'taqḍab' meaning it sends out its rays like rods.
البِتيرَة تصغير البترة، وهي الأتان.
Al-battayrah is the diminutive of al-batrah, which is the she-ass.
والبترية: فرقة من الزيدية نسبوا إلى المغيرة بن سعد ولقبه الأبتر.
And al-Battriyyah: a sect of the Zaydis, attributed to al-Mughirah ibn Sa'd, whose nickname was al-Abṭar.
عفا النبت بعدي فالعريشان فالبتر
Vegetation withered after me, then Al-'Urayshān, then Al-Battr.
تركن رجال العنظوان تنوبهم ... ضباع خفاف من وراء الأباتر
They left the men of Al-'Unẓuwān to be replaced by ... light hyenas from behind Al-Abāter.
