الأمر معروف، نقيض النهي.
The command is known, the opposite of prohibition.
أمره به وأمره؛ الأخيرة عن كراع؛ وأمره إياه، على حذف الحرف، يأمره أمرا وإمارا فأتمر أي قبل أمره
He commanded him to do it, and he commanded him; the latter is from Kara'; and he commanded him to do it, omitting the particle, he commands him a command and an imāra, so he accepted, meaning he accepted his command.
وربرب خماص ... يأمرن باقتناص إنما أراد أنهن يشوقن من رآهن إلى تصيدها واقتناصها، وإلا فليس لهن أمر.
And they are lean and hungry... they incite to hunting; he only meant that they make whoever sees them desire to hunt and capture them, otherwise they have no command.
وأمرنا لنسلم لرب العالمين
And We commanded, 'Submit to the Lord of the worlds.'
فمن قال: أمرتك بأن تفعل فالباء للإلصاق والمعنى وقع الأمر بهذا الفعل
So whoever says: 'I commanded you to do it,' the 'ba' is for attachment, and the meaning is that the command fell upon this action.
ومن قال أمرتك أن تفعل فعلى حذف الباء
And whoever says 'I commanded you to do it' is omitting the 'ba'.
ومن قال أمرتك لتفعل فقد أخبرنا بالعلة التي لها وقع الأمر، والمعنى أمرنا للإسلام.
And whoever says 'I commanded you to do it' has informed us of the reason for which the command was given, and the meaning is 'We commanded for submission'.
أتى أمر الله فلا تستعجلوه
The command of Allah has come, so do not seek to hasten it.
قال الزجاج: أمر الله ما وعدهم به من المجازاة على كفرهم من أصناف العذاب
Al-Zajjaj said: The command of Allah is what He promised them of recompense for their disbelief from various torments.
حتى إذا جاء أمرنا وفار التنور
Until when Our command came and the oven overflowed.
وكذلك قوله تعالى: أتاها أمرنا ليلا أو نهارا فجعلناها حصيدا
And likewise His saying: Our command came to it by night or by day, and We made it stubble.
وأمرنا لنسلم لرب العالمين
And We commanded, 'Submit to the Lord of the worlds.'
وأمر أهلك بالصلاة
And enjoin prayer upon your family.
خذ العفو وأمر بالعرف
Take what is given freely, command what is good.
أمر فلان مستقيم وأموره مستقيمة.
So-and-so's affair is straight, and his affairs are straight.
ألا إلى الله تصير الأمور.
Unquestionably, to Allah all matters are [ultimately] decided.
وأوحى في كل سماء أمرها
And He inspired in each heaven its affair.
والآمرة: الأمر، وهو أحد المصادر التي جاءت على فاعلة كالعافية والعاقبة والجازية والخاتمة.
And al-āmirah: the command, and it is one of the masdars that came on the pattern of fā'ilah like al-'āfiyah, al-'āqibah, al-jāziyah, and al-khātimah.
وقالوا في الأمر: أومر ومر، ونظيره كل وخذ؛ قال ابن سيده؛ وليس بمطرد عند سيبويه.
And they said regarding the command: awmir and mar, and its parallel is kull and khudh; Ibn Sidah said; and it is not consistent according to Sibawayh.
فإذا تقدم قبل الكلام واو أو فاء قلت: وأمر فأمر كما قال عز وجل: وأمر أهلك بالصلاة
So if a waw or fa precedes the word, you say: wa'mur fa'mur, as in His Almighty saying: And enjoin prayer upon your family.
وكلا منها رغدا؛ ولم يقل: وأكلا
And eat from it [wherever you will] with pleasure; and He did not say: wa'kulā.
وإذا أردنا أن نهلك قرية أمرنا مترفيها ففسقوا فيها
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent dwellers, and they commit ungodliness therein.
قرأ أكثر القراء: أمرنا، وروى خارجة عن نافع آمرنا، بالمد، وسائر أصحاب نافع رووه عنه مقصورا، وروي عن أبي عمرو: أمرنا، بالتشديد، وسائر أصحابه رووه بتخفيف الميم وبالقصر
Most of the reciters read: amarnā, and Kharijah narrated from Nafi' āmaranā, with the long vowel, and the rest of Nafi's companions narrated it from him as short, and it was narrated from Abu Amr: ammarana, with shadda, and the rest of his companions narrated it with a light mim and short vowel.
فمن قرأ أمرنا، بالتخفيف، فالمعنى أمرناهم بالطاعة ففسقوا.
So whoever reads amarnā, with the light vowel, the meaning is 'We commanded them to obey, and they became wicked'.
ألست تقول أمرت زيدا فضرب عمرا؟ والمعنى أنك أمرته أن يضرب عمرا فضربه فهذا اللفظ لا يدل على غير الضرب
Do you not say 'I commanded Zayd, so he struck Amr'? And the meaning is that you commanded him to strike Amr, and he struck him, so this wording does not indicate anything other than striking.
وإذا أردنا أن نهلك قرية أمرنا مترفيها ففسقوا فيها ، أمرتك فعصيتني، فقد علم أن المعصية مخالفة الأمر، وذلك الفسق مخالفة أمر الله.
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent dwellers, and they commit ungodliness therein. I commanded you, and you disobeyed me. It is known that disobedience is a violation of the command, and that wickedness is a violation of Allah's command.
قال: من قرأ أمرنا، بالتخفيف، فالمعنى أمرناهم بالطاعة ففسقوا.
He said: Whoever reads amarnā, with the light vowel, the meaning is 'We commanded them to obey, and they became wicked'.
قال: وروي عنه أنه بمعنى أكثرنا
He said: And it was narrated from him that it means 'We made numerous'.
قال: والدليل على هذا قول النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم؛ خير المال سكة مأبورة أو مهرة مأمورة؛ أي مكثرة.
He said: And the evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: The best wealth is a well-trodden path or a prolific mare; meaning numerous.
مهرة مأمورة أي نتوج ولود؛
A prolific mare, meaning giving birth and bearing young;
إن يغبطوا يهبطوا، وإن أمروا، ... يوما، يصيروا للهلك والنكد
If they are envied, they descend; and if they increase... one day, they will become ruined and miserable.
إنما هو مهرة مأمورة للازدواج لأنهم أتبعوها مأبورة، فلما ازدوج اللفظان جاؤوا بمأمورة على وزن مأبورة كما قالت العرب: إني آتيه بالغدايا والعشايا، وإنما تجمع الغداة غدوات فجاؤوا بالغدايا على لفظ العشايا تزويجا للفظين، ولها نظائر.
It is only a prolific mare for the sake of parallelism because they followed it with 'ma'būrah', so when the two words matched, they brought 'ma'mūrah' on the pattern of 'ma'būrah', just as the Arabs said: 'I come to him in the mornings and evenings', and the plural of 'al-ghadāh' is 'ghadawāt', so they brought 'al-ghadāyā' on the pattern of 'al-'ashāyā' for the parallelism of the two words, and it has parallels.
والأصل فيها مؤمرة على مفعلة، كما قال، صلى الله عليه وسلم: ارجعن مأزورات غير مأجورات ؛ وإنما هو موزورات من الوزر فقيل مأزورات على لفظ مأجورات ليزدوجا.
And its origin is mu'ammirah on the pattern of muf'alah, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: Return burdened with sin, not rewarded; and it is originally mawzūrāt from 'al-wazr', so it was said 'ma'zūrāt' on the pattern of 'ma'jūrāt' for parallelism.
أمر الله المهرة أي كثر ولدها.
Allah made the mare numerous, meaning her offspring increased.
أمر القوم أي كثروا
The people increased, meaning they became numerous.
لقد أمر أمر ابن أبي كبشة وارتفع شأنه
Indeed, the affair of the son of Abu Kabshah has become prominent, and his status has risen.
ما لي أرى أمرك يأمر؟ فقال: والله ليأمرن أي يزيد على ما ترى
Why do I see your affair increasing? He said: By Allah, it will surely increase, meaning it will exceed what you see.
كنا نقول في الجاهلية قد أمر بنو فلان أي كثروا.
We used to say in the Jahiliyyah: The people of so-and-so have increased, meaning they became numerous.
وأمر الرجل، فهو أمر: كثرت ماشيته.
And the man's [livestock] increased, so he is 'amr: his livestock became numerous.
آمره الله: كثر نسله وماشيته، ولا يقال أمره؛
Allah made him numerous: his offspring and livestock increased, and it is not said 'ammarahu';
ومثله كثير، وقيل: آمره وأمره لغتان.
And it is similar to many, and it is said: āmarahu and amrahu are two dialects.
آمرته، بالمد، وأمرته لغتان بمعنى كثرته.
Āmartuhu (with the long vowel) and amartuhu are two dialects meaning 'I made it numerous'.
أمر ماله، بالكسر، أي كثر.
Amara his wealth, with kasra, meaning it increased.
وأمر بنو فلان إيمارا: كثرت أموالهم.
And the people of so-and-so increased abundantly: their wealth became numerous.
رجل أمور بالمعروف، وقد ائتمر بخير: كأن نفسه أمرته به فقبله.
A man enjoining good, and he resolved on good: as if his soul commanded him to do it, so he accepted it.
تآمروا على الأمر وائتمروا: تماروا وأجمعوا آراءهم.
They conspired regarding the matter and conferred: they debated and gathered their opinions.
إن الملأ يأتمرون بك ليقتلوك
Indeed, the eminent men are conspiring against you to kill you.
أي يتشاورون عليك ليقتلوك؛ واحتج بقول النمر بن تولب: أحار بن عمرو فؤادي خمر، ... ويعدو على المرء ما يأتمر
Meaning they are consulting about you to kill you; and he used as evidence the saying of Al-Nimr bin Tawalib: My heart is intoxicated, O Har bin Amr... and what one consults upon harms a person.
ويعدو على المرء ما يأتمر أي إذا ائتمر أمرا غير رشد عدا عليه فأهلكه.
And what one consults upon harms a person, meaning if he consults upon an unwise matter, it will harm him and destroy him.
إن الملأ يأتمرون بك ؛ أي يهمون بك؛
Indeed, the eminent men are conspiring against you; meaning they are plotting against you;
وأتمروا بينكم بمعروف؛ أي هموا به واعتزموا عليه
And consult each other about it with good; meaning they intended it and resolved upon it.
يأتمرون بك ؛ يأمر بعضهم بعضا بقتلك.
They conspire against you; meaning some of them command others to kill you.
ائتمر القوم وتآمروا إذا أمر بعضهم بعضا
The people conferred and conspired when some of them commanded others.
ومعنى يأتمرون بك أي يؤامر بعضهم بعضا فيك أي في قتلك أحسن من قول القتيبي إنه بمعنى يهمون بك.
And the meaning of 'ya'tamarūn bika' is that some of them consult with others about you, meaning in your killing, which is better than Al-Qutaybi's saying that it means 'they plot against you'.
وأما قوله: وأتمروا بينكم بمعروف؛ فمعناه، والله أعلم، ليأمر بعضكم بعضا بمعروف
And as for His saying: 'And consult each other about it with good'; its meaning, and Allah knows best, is that some of you should command others with good.
اعلمن أن كل مؤتمر معناه أن من ائتمر رأيه في كل ما ينوبه يخطئ أحيانا
Know that everyone who consults [his opinion] means that whoever consults his opinion on everything that befalls him sometimes errs.
لما رأى تلبيس أمر مؤتمر
When he saw the confusion of a deliberated matter.
تلبيس أمر أي تخليط أمر. مؤتمر أي اتخذ أمرا.
Confusion of a matter, meaning mixing up a matter. Mu'tamir, meaning one who has taken a matter.
بئسما ائتمرت لنفسك.
What a terrible thing you have resolved upon for yourself.
رجل إذا نزل به أمر ائتمر رأيه
A man, when an affair befalls him, consults his opinion.
معناه ارتأى وشاور نفسه قبل أن يواقع ما يريد
Meaning he considered and consulted himself before undertaking what he intended.
اعلمن أن كل مؤتمر أي كل من عمل برأيه فلا بد أن يخطئ الأحيان.
Know that everyone who consults [his opinion], meaning everyone who acts upon his opinion, must sometimes err.
ولا يأتمر لمرشد أي لا يشاوره.
And he does not consult for a guide, meaning he does not seek his counsel.
