And what is known is: he gathers them, and he has his gathering.
فمن فرغ لها قلبه وحاذ عليها، فهو مؤمن أي حافظ عليها، من حاذ الإبل يحوذها إذا حازها وجمعها ليسوقها.
So whoever dedicates his heart to it and guards it, he is a believer, meaning he preserves it, from the act of driving camels when he gathers and collects them to drive them.
وطرد أحوذ: سريع؛
And a swift chase: fast;
وأحوذ السير: سار سيرا شديدا.
And al-aḥwadh al-sayr: he traveled with intense speed.
والأحوذي: السريع في كل ما أخذ فيه، وأصله في السفر.
And al-aḥwadhī: swift in everything undertaken, its origin being in travel.
والحوذ: السوق السريع، يقال: حذت الإبل أحوذها حوذا وأحوذتها مثله.
And al-ḥawḏ: the swift driving; it is said: I drove the camels swiftly, I made them drive swiftly, and I made them drive swiftly, similarly.
على أحوذيين استقلت عليهما، ... فما هي إلا لمحة فتغيب
On swift wings it took flight, ... and it was but a glimpse before it disappeared
أتتك عبس تحمل المشيا، ... ماء من الطثرة أحوذيا
‘Abs came to you carrying the march, ... water from the diarrhea, causing rapid evacuation.
والأحوذي: الذي يسير مسيرة عشر في ثلاث ليال؛
And al-aḥwadhī: one who travels a distance of ten days in three nights;
وأحوذ ذاك إذا جمعه وضمه؛
And gather that if you collect and draw it together;
ومنه يقال: استحوذ على كذا إذا حواه.
And from this it is said: he seized such-and-such if he encompassed it.
وأحوذ ثوبه: ضمه إليه؛
And he gathered his garment: he drew it to himself;
إذا اجتمعت وأحوذ جانبيها ... وأوردها على عوج طوال
When they gathered and he drew its sides together ... and brought them to long, crooked legs
وأمر محوذ: مضموم محكم كمحوز، وجاد ما أحوذ قصيدته أي أحكمها.
And a muḥawwaḏ matter: gathered and perfected, like muḥawwaz, and he perfected his poem, meaning he made it excellent.
وأحوذ الصانع القدح إذا أخفه؛
And the craftsman made the cup light if he thinned it;
فهو كقدح المنيح أحوذه الصانع، ... ينفي عن متنه القوبا
He is like a cup of the gifted, made light by the craftsman, ... repelling the dirt from its surface
والأحوذي: المشمر في الأمور القاهر لها الذي لا يشذ عليه منها شيء.
And al-aḥwadhī: the diligent in matters, the conqueror of them, from whom nothing escapes.
والحويذ من الرجال: المشمر؛
And al-ḥuwaiḏ among men: the diligent one;
والأحوذي: الذي يغلب.
And al-aḥwadhī: one who prevails.
واستحوذ: غلب.
And istiḥawḏa: he prevailed.
كان والله أحوذيا نسيج وحده.
By God, he was a unique, unmatched individual.
الأحوذي: الحاد المنكمش في أموره الحسن لسياق الأمور.
Al-aḥwadhī: the sharp, agile one in his affairs, good at managing matters.
وحاذه يحوذه حوذا: غلبه.
And he contended with him, he overcame him with contention: he defeated him.
واستحوذ عليه الشيطان واستحاذ أي غلب، جاء بالواو على أصله، كما جاء استروح واستصوب، وهذا الباب كله يجوز أن يتكلم به على الأصل.
And Satan overcame him and seized him, meaning he dominated him, coming with the 'waw' according to its origin, as istarūḥa and istasawba came, and this entire category can be spoken of according to the origin.
تقول العرب: استصاب واستصوب واستجاب واستجوب، وهو قياس مطرد عندهم.
The Arabs say: istasaba and istasawaba, istajaba and istajwaba, and it is a consistent analogy for them.
ألم نستحوذ عليكم ؛ أي ألم نغلب على أموركم ونستول على مودتكم.
Did we not overcome you?; meaning, did we not gain control over your affairs and win your affection.
ما من ثلاثة في قرية ولا بدو لا تقام فيهم الصلاة إلا وقد استحوذ عليهم الشيطان أي استولى عليهم وحواهم إليه؛
There are no three people in a village or desert where prayer is not established among them except that Satan has overcome them, meaning he has taken control of them and gathered them to himself;
امتنعوا من استعمال استحوذ معتلا وإن كان القياس داعيا إلى ذلك مؤذنا به، لكن عارض فيه إجماعهم على إخراجه مصححا ليكون ذلك على أصول ما غير من نحوه كاستقام واستعان.
They refrained from using istiḥawḏa with a weak letter, even though analogy called for it and indicated it, but their consensus to keep it sound opposed it, so that it would be like the origins of what was changed from its kind, such as istiqāma and isti‘āna.
فقال: غلب على قلوبهم.
So he said: he dominated their hearts.
ألم نستحوذ عليكم ونمنعكم من المؤمنين ؛
Did we not overcome you and protect you from the believers?;
معنى ألم نستحوذ عليكم: ألم نستول عليكم بالموالاة لكم.
The meaning of 'Did we not overcome you?': Did we not gain control over you by allying with you.
حاذ الحمار أتنه إذا استولى عليها وجمعها وكذلك حازها؛
The donkey mounted its female if it took control of her and gathered her, and similarly it possessed her;
استحوذ خرج على أصله، فمن قال حاذ يحوذ لم يقل إلا استحاذ، ومن قال أحوذ فأخرجه على الأصل قال استحوذ.
Istiḥawḏa came out according to its origin; so whoever says ḥāḏa yaḥūḏu says only istiḥāḏa, and whoever says aḥwaḏa and brings it out according to the origin says istiḥawḏa.
والحاذ: الحال؛
And al-ḥāḏ: the condition;
أغبط الناس المؤمن الخفيف الحاذ أي خفيف الظهر.
The most envied of people is the believer with a light condition, meaning light of back.
والحاذان: ما وقع عليه الذنب من أدبار الفخذين، وقيل: خفيف الحال من المال؛
And al-ḥāḏān: what the rump rests upon from the hindquarters of the thighs, and it was said: light of condition in terms of wealth;
ليأتين على الناس زمان يغبط الرجل فيه لخفة الحاذ كما يغبط اليوم أبو العشرة ؛
There will come upon people a time when a man will be envied for the lightness of his condition, just as the wealthy man is envied today;
كيف حالك وحاذك؟
How is your condition and your state?
والحاذ طريقة المتن، واللام أعلى من الذال، يقال: حال متنه وحاذ متنه، وهو موضع اللبد من ظهر الفرس.
And al-ḥāḏ is the path of the back, and the 'lam' is higher than the 'dhal'; it is said: his back is its path, and his back is its path, and it is the place of the saddle on the horse's back.
والحاذان ما استقبلك من فخذي الدابة إذا استدبرتها؛
And al-ḥāḏān are what face you from the thighs of the animal if you turn your back to it;
وتلف حاذيها بذي خصل ... ريان، مثل قوادم النسر
And its sides are entwined with thick hair ... moist, like the forelegs of an eagle
والحاذان لحمتان في ظاهر الفخذين تكونان في الإنسان وغيره؛
And al-ḥāḏān are two muscles on the outer part of the thighs, found in humans and others;
خفيف الحاذ نسال الفيافي، ... وعبد للصحابة غير عبد الرياشي
Light of thigh, traversing the deserts, ... and a servant of the companions, not a servant of the wealthy.
والحاذ الذي يقع عليه الذنب من الفخذين من ذا الجانب وذا الجانب؛
And al-ḥāḏ is what the rump rests upon from the thighs, from this side and that side;
وتلف حاذيها بذي خصل ... عقمت، فنعم بنية العقم
And its sides are entwined with thick hair ... barren, and what a good offspring of barrenness
والحاذ ما وقع عليه الذنب من أدبار الفخذين، وجمع الحاذ أحواذ.
And al-ḥāḏ is what the rump rests upon from the hindquarters of the thighs, and the plural of al-ḥāḏ is aḥwāḏ.
والحاذ والحال معا: ما وقع عليه اللبد من ظهر الفرس؛
And al-ḥāḏ and al-ḥāl together: what the saddle rests upon from the horse's back;
وفي حديث: ليأتين على الناس زمان يغبط الرجل فيه لخفة الحاذ كما يغبط اليوم أبو العشرة ؛ ضربه مثلا لقلة المال والعيال.
And in the hadith: There will come upon people a time when a man will be envied for the lightness of his condition, just as the wealthy man is envied today; he struck it as an example for scarcity of wealth and family.
ورجل خفيف الحاذ أي قليل المال، ويكون أيضا القليل العيال.
And a man with a light condition means little wealth, and it can also mean few dependents.
أنفع اللبن ما ولي حاذي الناقة أي ساعة تحلب من غير أن يكون رضعها حوار [حوار] قبل ذلك.
The most beneficial milk is that which follows the side of the she-camel, meaning the time of milking without a calf having nursed it before.
والحاذ: نبت، وقيل: شجر عظام ينبت نبتة الرمث لها غصنة كثيرة الشوك.
And al-ḥāḏ: a plant, and it was said: large trees that grow like the Rithmah plant, with many thorny branches.
إذا أخلفت صوب الربيع وصالها ... عراد وحاذ ملبس كل أجرعا «1» .
When the spring rains failed and its strength was tested ... by drought and ḥāḏ, covering every dry patch.
الحاذ شجر، الواحدة حاذة من شجر الجنبة؛
Al-ḥāḏ is a tree, the singular is ḥāḏah, from the shrubbery trees;
ذوات أمطي وذات الحاذ والأمطي: شجرة لها صمغ يمضغه صبيان الأعراب،
Possessors of Amṭī and possessors of al-ḥāḏ and al-amṭī: a tree that has gum which the children of the Bedouins chew,
الحاذة شجرة يألفها بقر الوحش؛
Al-ḥāḏah is a tree that wild cattle frequent;
وهن جنوح لذي حاذة، ... ضوارب غزلانها بالجرن
And they are inclined towards one with al-ḥāḏah, ... striking their gazelles with their horns
دعاهن ذكر الحاذ من رمل خطمة ... فمارد في جردائهن الأبارق
The mention of al-ḥāḏ from the sands of Khaṭmah called them ... and Marid in their open spaces, the shining ones
والحوذان: نبت يرتفع قدر الذراع له زهرة حمراء في أصلها صفرة وورقته مدورة والحافر يسمن عليه، وهو من نبات السهل حلو طيب الطعم؛
And al-ḥawḏān: a plant that rises about a cubit, having a red flower with yellow at its base and round leaves, and the hoofed animal fattens on it, and it is from the plants of the plain, sweet and pleasant in taste;
آكل من حوذانه وأنسل
I eat from its ḥawḏān and grow lean
والحوذان: نبات مثل الهندبا ينبت مسطحا في جلد الأرض وليانها لازقا بها، وقلما ينبت في السهل، ولها زهرة صفراء.
And al-ḥawḏān: a plant like chicory that grows flat on the skin of the earth and its soft parts, sticking to it, and it rarely grows in the plain, and it has a yellow flower.
حوذان: الحوذان نبت له ورق وقصب ونور أصفر.
Ḥawḏān: Al-ḥawḏān is a plant with leaves, stalks, and yellow blossoms.
والهاذة شجرة لها أغصان سبطة لا ورق لها، وجمعها الهاذ؛
And al-hāḏah is a tree with straight branches and no leaves, and its plural is al-hāḏ;
والمحفوظ في باب الأشجار الحاذ.
And what is preserved in the chapter on trees is al-ḥāḏ.
وحوذان وأبو حوذان: أسماء رجال؛
And Ḥawḏān and Abū Ḥawḏān: names of men;
أتتك قواف من كريم هجوته، ... أبا الحوذ، فانظر كيف عنك تذود
Verses have come to you from a generous one whom you have reviled, ... O father of al-Ḥawḏ, so see how you repel from yourself
إنما أراد أبا حوذان فحذف وغير بدخول الألف واللام؛
He only intended Abū Ḥawḏān, so he omitted and changed by the entry of the definite article;
جدلاء محكمة من صنع سلام يريد سليمان فغير مع أنه غلط فنسب الدروع إلى سليمان وإنما هي لداود؛
A strong, well-made one from the making of Salām, meaning Sulaymān, so he changed it, although he was mistaken in attributing the armor to Sulaymān, when it belonged to David;
ونسج سليم كل قضاء ذائل يعني سليمان أيضا، وقد غلط كما غلط الحطيئة؛
And Sulaym's weaving of every decaying judgment, meaning Sulaymān also, and he was mistaken as al-Ḥuṭayʾah was mistaken;
واحدتها حوذانة وبها سمي الرجل؛
Its singular is ḥawḏānah, and a man was named after it;
لو كان حوذانة بالبلاد، ... قام بها بالدلو والمقاط، أيام أدعو يا بني زياد ... أزرق بوالا على البساط
If Ḥawḏānah were in the lands, ... she would stand in them with the bucket and the rope, on the days I call, O sons of Ziyād ... blue, urinating on the carpet
