Al-Farra' said: 'Al-waṣīd and al-aṣīd are two variants, like al-wikāf and al-ikāf, and they both mean courtyard.'

And he closed the door, and he shut it; it is 'mūṣad', like 'awjaʿahu' (it pained him), so it is 'mūjiʿ' (painful).

فوقع الجبل على باب الكف فأوصده أي سده، من أوصدت الباب إذا أغلقته

So the mountain fell upon the entrance of the cave and sealed it, from 'awṣadtu al-bāba' (I closed the door) if you close it.

وأوصد القدر: أطبقها، والاسم منهما جميعا الوصاد؛ حكاه اللحياني.

And he sealed the pot: he covered it completely, and the noun from both is 'al-waṣṣād'; Al-Laythyani narrated this.

قال أبو عبيدة: آصدت وأوصدت إذا أطبقت، ومعنى مؤصدة أي مطبقة عليهم.

Abu Ubaydah said: 'Āṣada and Awṣada mean to cover completely, and 'mūʾṣadah' means closed in upon them.'

والوصيدة كالحظيرة تتخذ للمال إلا أنها من الحجارة والحظيرة من الغصنة.

And 'al-waṣīdah' is like a pen made for livestock, except that it is made of stones, while a pen is made of branches.

تقول منه: استوصدت في الجبل إذا اتخذت الوصيدة.

You say from it: 'I built a stone enclosure in the mountain' if you made a 'waṣīdah'.

ووصده: أغراه؛ وأوصد الكلب بالصيد كذلك.

And he incited him: he provoked him; and he incited the dog towards the prey similarly.

والتوصيد: التحذير

And 'al-tawṣīd': warning.

قال: وعندي أنه إنما عنى به خبته سراويله، أو غير ذلك منها، وقوله لم يستعن أي لم يحلق عانته.

He said: 'And I think he meant by it the lining of his trousers, or something else from it, and his saying 'lam yastaʿin' means he did not shave his pubic hair.'

وصد النساج بعض الخيط في بعض وصدا ووصده: أدخل اللحمة في السدى.

And the weaver wove some thread into some, 'waṣdan', and he wove it: he inserted the weft into the warp.
