And Abu Bakr said: The Arabs do not say 'harrawta the garment', but they say 'harrayta'.
وَقَوْلُهُ: بَيْنَ مَهْرُودَتَيْنِ أَيْ بَيْنَ شُقَّتَيْنِ أَخَذَتَا مِنَ الْهَرَدِ، وَهُوَ الشَّقُّ، خَطَأٌ لِأَنَّ الْعَرَبَ لَا تُسَمِّي الشَّقَّ لِلْإِصْلَاحِ هَرْدًا بَلْ يُسَمُّونَ الْإِخْرَاقَ وَالْإِفْسَادَ هَرْدًا.
And his saying: between two torn garments, meaning between two pieces of cloth taken from al-hard, which is a rip, is incorrect because the Arabs do not call a rip for mending 'hard', rather they call ripping and spoiling 'hard'.
وَقَالَ: وَالدَّالُ وَالذَّالُ أُخْتَانِ تُبَدَّلُ إِحْدَاهُمَا مِنَ الْأُخْرَى؛ يُقَالُ: رَجُلٌ مَدَلٌّ وَمَذَلٌّ إِذَا كَانَ قَلِيلَ الْجِسْمِ خَفِيَّ الشَّخْصِ، وَكَذَلِكَ الدَّالُ وَالذَّالُ فِي قَوْلِهِ مَعْرُودَتَيْنِ.
And he said: And the dal and dhal are sisters, one is substituted for the other; it is said: a man is 'madall' and 'madhall' if he is thin-bodied and inconspicuous, and likewise dal and dhal in his saying 'ma'roodatein'.
وَقَوْلُ سَاعِدَةَ الْهُذَلِيِّ: غَدَاةَ شَوَاحِطٍ فَنَجَوْتُ شَدًّا، ... وَثَوْبُكَ فِي عَبَاقِيَةٍ هَرِيدٌ أَيْ مَشْقُوقٌ.
And the saying of Sa'idah Al-Hudhali: On the morning of Shawahit, I escaped with a rush, ... And your garment in Abaqiyah is torn, meaning ripped.
