Al-Azhari said: And it is also 'al-'amadu and 'al-amadu'.

And 'amada 'alayhi: he was angry, like 'abada; Ya'qub narrated it in Al-Mubaddal.

قال الأزهري: ورأيت في كتاب قديم مسموع من كيل محق، بالتخفيف، من المحق، وفسر هل زاد على مكيال نقص كيله أي طفف

Al-Azhari said: And I saw in an old book, heard from 'kayli muḥiqqin', with abbreviation, from 'al-maḥiqqu', and it was explained as 'did it increase beyond a measure whose measure was deficient?', meaning 'was it short'.

فاكتل أصياعك منه وانطلق، ... ويحك هل أعمد من كيل محق

So measure out your spans from it and go... Woe to you, is it more than a full measure?

وقال: معناه هل أزيد على أن محق كيلي؟

And he said: Its meaning is 'Do I increase beyond the fact that my measure was full?'

فوضع رجله على مذمره ليجهز عليه، فقال له أبو جهل: أعمد من سيد قتله قومه أي أعجب

So he placed his foot on his flank to finish him off, and Abu Jahl said to him: 'a'amadu min sayyidin qatalathu qawmuhu', meaning 'more amazing than a chief killed by his people'.

فقال له أبو جهل: أعمد من سيد قتله قومه أي أعجب؛ قال أبو عبيد: معناه هل زاد على سيد قتله قومه، هل كان إلا هذا؟

So Abu Jahl said to him: 'a'amadu min sayyidin qatalathu qawmuhu', meaning 'more amazing'; Abu Ubaid said: Its meaning is 'Did he exceed a chief killed by his people? Was he anything other than this?'

وقال شمر: هذا استفهام أي أعجب من رجل قتله قومه

And Shammar said: This is a question, meaning 'more amazing than a man killed by his people'.

كأن الأصل أأعمد من سيد فخففت إحدى الهمزتين

As if the original was 'a'a'amadu min sayyidin', so one of the hamzas was lightened.

وأعمد من قوم كفاهم أخوهم ... صدام الأعادي، حيث فلت نيوبها

And 'a'amadu min qawmin kafāhum akhūhum... ṣiddāma al-a'ādī, ḥaythu falat niyūbuhā

يقول: هل زدنا على أن كفينا إخوتنا.

He says: Did we do more than suffice our brothers?

المعمد والعمد والعمدان والعمداني: الشاب الممتلئ شبابا، وقيل هو الضخم الطويل، والأنثى من كل ذلك بالهاء، والجمع العمدانيون

Al-Mu'ammadu, wa al-'amadu, wa al-'amadan, wa al-'amadāni: the young man full of youth, and it was said he is the large and tall one, and the female of all of that is with the 'ha', and the plural is 'al-'amadāniyyūn'.

Al-'amūdu, wa al-'imādu, wa al-'umdatu, wa al-'amadan: the leader of the army, and he is the 'al-zuwayru'.

It is said: ḥalasa bihi, wa 'arasa bihi, wa 'amada bihi, wa lazaba bihi if he stuck to him.

عمدان اسم جبل أو موضع؛ قال الأزهري: أراه أراد غمدان، بالغين، فصحفه وهو حصن في رأس جبل باليمن معروف وكان لآل ذي يزن

'Amdan is the name of a mountain or place; Al-Azhari said: I think he meant Ghamdān, with a ghayn, so he misspelled it, and it is a known fortress on top of a mountain in Yemen that belonged to the family of Dhi Yazan.

العمرود والعمرد: الطويل

Al-'umrūdu and al-'amardu: the tall one.

يقال ذئب عمرد وسبسب عمرد طويل؛ عن ابن الأعرابي؛ وأنشد

It is said: a fierce wolf and a long, open plain; from Ibn Al-A'rabi; and he recited:

فإلى صناع الرجل خرقاء اليد، ... خطارة بالسبسب العمرد

To the clumsy-handed woman... who roams the vast, tall plain.

ويقال: العمرد الشرس الخلق القوي

And it is said: Al-'amardu is fierce in disposition and strong.

ويقال: فرس عمرد

And it is said: a fierce horse.

من السح جوالا، كأن غلامه ... يصرف سبدا في العنان عمردا

From the swift ones, roaming, as if his slave... was directing a fierce one in the reins.

والسبد: الداهية. يقال: هو سبد أسباد

And 'al-sabdu': the calamity. It is said: He is a calamity of calamities.

شأو عمرد؛ قال عوف بن الأحوص: ثارت بهم قتلى حنيفة، إذ أبت ... بنسوتهم إلا النجاء العمردا

'Sha'wu 'amardin'; Auf bin Al-Ahwas said: The slain of Hanifa rose against them, when their women refused... except for the swift escape.

والعمرد: الذئب الخبيث؛ قال جرير يصف فرسا: على سابح نهد يشبه، بالضحى، ... إذا عاد فيه الركض، سيدا عمردا

And 'al-'amardu': the wicked wolf; Jarir said, describing a horse: On a rising, full-chested runner, resembling, at midday... when the running returned to it, a fierce master.

على رفل ذي فضول أقود، ... يغتال نسعيه بحوز موفد، صافي السبيب سلب عمرد

On a flowing, ample leader, ... who ambushes his strides with a reliable enclosure, pure of mane, a swift, select one.

فسألتها عن العمرد فقالت: النجيبة الرحيل من الإبل، وقالت: الرحيل الذي يرتحله الرجل ويركبه

So I asked her about 'al-'amardu', and she said: The excellent riding camel from the camels, and she said: The riding camel that a man rides and mounts.

والعمرد: السير السريع الشديد؛ وأنشد

And 'al-'amardu': the swift and intense pace; and he recited:

فلم أر للهم المنيخ كرحلة، ... يحث بها القوم النجاء العمردا

So I have not seen for the settled worry like a journey, ... with which the people urged on the swift escape.
