أبو خيرة وابن شميل: العربد، الدال شديدة: حية أحمر أرقش بكدرة وسواد لا يزال ظاهرا عندنا وقلما يظلم إلا أن يؤذى، لا صغير ولا كبير.

Abu Khayrah and Ibn Shumayl said: Al-'arabid, with a strong 'dal': is a red, speckled snake with muddiness and blackness, which is always visible among us and rarely darkens unless provoked, neither young nor old.

ويقال للمعربد: عربيد كأنه شبه بالحية.

And the one who behaves like this is called 'arabid', as if he were likened to the snake.

والعربيد والمعربد: السوار في السكر، منه.
