والعدة: ما أعد لأمر يحدث مثل الأهبة.
And al-'iddah: what is prepared for an event that occurs, like readiness.
يقال: أعددت للأمر عدته.
It is said: I prepared for the matter its preparation.
وأعده لأمر كذا: هيأه له.
And he prepared it for such-and-such a matter: he made it ready for it.
والاستعداد للأمر: التهيؤ له.
And al-isti'dad for the matter: preparing for it.
وأما قوله تعالى: وأعتدت لهن متكأ ، فإنه إن كان كما ذهب إليه قوم من أنه غير بالإبدال كراهية المثلين، كما يفر منها إلى الإدغام، فهو من هذا الباب، وإن كان من العتاد فظاهر أنه ليس منه، ومذهب الفارسي أنه على الإبدال.
As for His saying, the Almighty: 'And she had prepared for them a feast', if it is as some have gone, that it was changed by substitution out of dislike for repetition, as one flees from it to assimilation, then it is from this category; and if it is from al-'atad, it is apparent that it is not from it, and the opinion of Al-Farisi is that it is by substitution.
والعدة من السلاح ما اعتددته، خص به السلاح لفظا فلا أدري أخصه في المعنى أم لا.
And al-'iddah from weapons is what you have prepared; the word is specifically for weapons, so I do not know if it is specific in meaning or not.
إنما أقطعت له الماء العد؛ قال: فرجعه منه ؛
I only granted him the permanent water; he said: So he took it back from him.
العد موضع يتخذه الناس يجتمع فيه ماء كثير، والجمع الأعداد،
Al-'add is a place people use where much water gathers, and the plural is al-a'dad.
الماء العد الدائم الذي له مادة لا انقطاع لها مثل ماء العين وماء البئر، وجمع العد أعداد.
Al-ma' al-'add is the permanent water that has a source with no interruption, like spring water and well water, and the plural of al-'add is a'dad.
نزلوا أعداد مياه الحديبية أي ذوات المادة كالعيون والآبار؛
They encamped at the permanent water sources of Al-Hudaybiyyah, meaning those with a source like springs and wells.
دعت مية الأعداد، واستبدلت بها ... خناطيل آجال من العين خذل
She called to the permanent waters, and replaced them with... long journeys of the springs, failing.
العد ماء الأرض الغزير، وقيل: العد ما نبع من الأرض، والكرع، ما نزل من السماء،
Al-'add is abundant earth water, and it is said: al-'add is what springs from the earth, and al-kar', what descends from the sky.
ديمومة، ما بها عد ولا ثمد
A perennial pond, in which there is no permanent water nor stagnant water.
العد: القديمة من الركايا، وهو من قولهم: حسب عد قديم؛
Al-'add: the old wells, and it is from their saying: an old, counted sum.
حسب عد كثير، تشبيها بالماء الكثير وهذا غير قوي وأن يكون العد القديم أشبه؛
A large counted sum, likened to abundant water, and this is not strong, and that it is the old water is more likely.
فوردت عدا من الأعداد ... أقدم من عاد وقوم عاد
So I came to a permanent water source from the permanent sources... older than 'Ad and the people of 'Ad.
أتت آل شماس بن لأي، وإنما ... أتتهم بها الأحلام والحسب العد
She came to the family of Shammās ibn La'ay, and indeed... dreams and counted lineage brought them to her.
الماء العد، بلغة تميم، الكثير،
Al-ma' al-'add, in the dialect of Tamim, is abundant.
وهو بلغة بكر بن وائل الماء القليل.
And in the dialect of Bakr ibn Wa'il, it is little water.
بنو تميم يقولون الماء العد، مثل كاظمة [كاظمة]، جاهلي إسلامي لم ينزح قط،
The Banu Tamim say al-ma' al-'add, like Kazhimah, pre-Islamic and Islamic, never dried up.
الماء العد الركي؛ يقال: أمن العد هذا أم من ماء السماء؟
Al-ma' al-'add is the well water; it is said: Is this from the well water or from the sky water?
وماء، ليس من عد الركايا ... ولا جلب السماء، قد استقيت
And water, not from the permanent wells... nor brought from the sky, I have drawn.
ماؤها كل ركية عد، قل أو كثر.
Its water is every well, abundant or scarce.
وعدان الشباب والملك: أولهما وأفضلهما؛
And 'iddan of youth and kingship: the first and best of them.
ولي على عدان ملك محتضر
And I have, in the time of a dying kingdom.
والعدان: الزمان والعهد؛
And al-'iddan: time and covenant.
ككسرى على عدانه، أو كقيصرا؟
Like Khosrau in his time, or like Caesar?
وهو من العدة كأنه أعد له وهيئ.
And it is from al-'iddah as if it was prepared and made ready for him.
وأنا على عدان ذلك أي حينه وإبانه؛
And I am at 'iddan of that, meaning its time and its period.
وكان ذلك على عدان فلان وعدانه أي على عهده وزمانه،
And that was at the time of so-and-so and his era, meaning at his covenant and his time.
وجئت على عدان تفعل ذلك وعدان تفعل ذلك أي حينه.
And I came at the time of you doing that and the time of you doing that, meaning its time.
ويقال: كان ذلك في عدان شبابه وعدان ملكه وهو أفضله وأكثره؛
And it is said: that was in the prime of his youth and the prime of his kingship, and it is the best and most abundant of it.
واشتقاقه من أن ذلك كان مهيأ معدا.
And its derivation is from that it was prepared and made ready.
وعداد القوس: صوتها ورنينها وهو صوت الوتر؛
And 'idād al-qaws: its sound and its ringing, which is the sound of the string.
هتوف، عدادها غرد
Resounding, its ringing is melodious.
والعد: بثر يكون في الوجه؛
And al-'add: a pustule that is on the face.
والعدة البثر يخرج على وجوه الملاح.
And al-'iddah is the pustule that emerges on the faces of the handsome.
يقال: قد استكمت العد فاقبحه أي ابيض رأسه من القيح فافضخه حتى تمسح عنه قيحه؛
It is said: the pustule has ripened, so break it open, meaning its head has turned white from pus, so break it until you wipe its pus from it.
العدعدة العجلة.
Al-'ad'adah is haste.
وعدعد في المشي وغيره عدعدة: أسرع.
And he hastened in walking and other things with haste: he sped up.
ويوم العداد: يوم العطاء؛
And yawm al-'iddād: the day of giving.
وقائلة يوم العداد لبعلها: ... أرى عتبة بن الوعل بعدي تغيرا
And a woman saying on the day of giving to her husband: ... I see Utbah ibn Al-Wa'il changing after me.
والعداد يوم العطاء؛ والعداد يوم العرض؛
And al-'iddād is the day of giving; and al-'iddād is the day of presentation.
من البيض العقائل، لم يقصر ... بها الآباء في يوم العداد
From the noble white women, the fathers did not fall short... for them on the day of presentation.
أراد يوم الفخار ومعادة بعضهم بعضا.
He meant the day of boasting and one's vying with another.
ويقال: بالرجل عداد أي مس من جنون،
And it is said: a man has 'addād, meaning a touch of madness.
هو شبه الجنون يأخذ الإنسان في أوقات معلومة.
It is like madness that takes a person at known times.
يقال للبغل إذا زجرته عدعد،
It is said to a mule when you urge it: 'ad'ad.
والعدعدة: صوت القطا وكأنه حكاية؛
And al-'ad'adah: the sound of sandgrouse, as if it were an imitation.
أرى الموت أعداد النفوس، ولا أرى ... بعيدا غدا، ما أقرب اليوم من غد
I see death as the count of souls, and I do not see... tomorrow as far, how close today is to tomorrow.
يقول: لكل إنسان ميتة فإذا ذهبت النفوس ذهبت ميتهم كلها.
He says: every person has a death, and when souls depart, all their deaths depart.
أن تسمع بالمعيدي خير من أن تراه؛
To hear of Al-Ma'idi is better than to see him.
وهو تصغير معدي منسوب إلى معد، وإنما خففت الدال استثقالا للجمع بين الشديدتين مع ياء التصغير، يضرب للرجل الذي له صيت وذكر في الناس، فإذا رأيته ازدريت مرآته.
And it is the diminutive of Ma'idi, attributed to Ma'd. The dal was lightened because of the difficulty of combining two strong letters with the ya of the diminutive. It is used for a man who has fame and renown among people, but when you see him, you disparage his appearance.
تسمع بالمعيدي لا أن تراه؛ وكأن تأويله تأويل أمر كأنه اسمع به ولا تره.
You hear of Al-Ma'idi, not see him; and as if its interpretation is the interpretation of a matter, as if it were: hear of it and do not see it.
والمعدان: موضع دفتي السرج.
And al-ma'dān: the place of the two sides of the saddle.
معد: أبو العرب وهو معد بن عدنان، وكان سيبويه يقول الميم من نفس الكلمة لقولهم تمعدد لقلة تمفعل في الكلام، وقد خولف فيه.
Ma'd: the father of the Arabs, and he is Ma'd ibn Adnan. Sibawayh used to say the mim is part of the word itself because they say 'tama'addada' due to the scarcity of the 'tafa''al' pattern in speech, and he was contradicted in this.
تمعدد الرجل أي تزيا بزيهم، أو انتسب إليهم، أو تصبر على عيش معد.
A man tama'addada means he dressed like them, or attributed himself to them, or endured the life of Ma'd.
اخشوشنوا وتمعددوا ؛
Be rough and live austerely.
يقال هو من الغلظ ومنه قيل للغلام إذا شب وغلظ: قد تمعدد؛
It is said to be from roughness, and from it, it is said to a boy when he grows and becomes rough: he has tama'addada.
ربيته حتى إذا تمعددا
I raised him until he became rough.
ويقال: تمعددوا أي تشبهوا بعيش معد، وكانوا أهل قشف وغلظ في المعاش؛ يقول: فكونوا مثلهم ودعوا التنعم وزي العجم؛
And it is said: tama'addadu means resemble the life of Ma'd, and they were people of hardship and roughness in living; he says: so be like them and abandon luxury and the attire of foreigners.
عليكم باللبسة المعدية ؛
Adhere to the Ma'di attire.
قفا، إنها أمست قفارا ومن بها، ... وإن كان من ذي ودنا قد تمعددا
Halt, for it has become desolate and whoever is in it, ... even if it is from one we loved who has become distant.
فإنه يريد تباعد،
For he means becoming distant.
معد في الأرض إذا أبعد في الذهاب،
Ma'd in the land means going far away.
أخشى عليه طيئا وأسدا، ... وخاربين خربا فمعدا
I fear for him Tayy and Asad, ... and destroyers destroying, so they go far.
أي أبعدا في الذهاب؛
Meaning, going far away.
