عتد الشيء عتادا، فهو عتيد: جسم.
The thing was prepared as 'itada, so it is 'atid: a body.
والعتيدة: وعاء الطيب ونحوه، منه.
And the 'atida: a container for perfume and the like, from it.
والعتيدة طبل العرائس أعتدت لما تحتاج إليه العروس من طيب وأداة وبخور ومشط وغيره، أدخل فيها الهاء على مذهب الأسماء.
And the 'atida is the bride's drum; it is prepared with what the bride needs of perfume, tools, incense, a comb, and other things, with the 'ha' inserted according to the rule for nouns.
ففتحت عتيدتها ؛ هي كالصندوق الصغير الذي تترك فيه المرأة ما يعز عليها من متاعها.
And she opened her 'atida; it is like a small box in which a woman keeps what is dear to her of her belongings.
وأعتد الشيء: أعده؛ قال الله عز وجل: وأعتدت لهن متكأ أي هيأت وأعدت.
And 'a'tada the thing: he prepared it; Allah the Almighty said: 'And We prepared for them a feast,' meaning He prepared and made ready.
يقال: أعتدت الشيء وأعددته، فهو معتد وعتيد؛ وقد عتده تعتيدا.
It is said: 'a'tadat the thing and 'a'ddatuhu, so it is mu'tad and 'atid; and he prepared it 'atidan.
إنا أعتدنا للظالمين نارا ؛
Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire;
أعتدت للغرماء كلبا ضاريا ... عندي، وفضل هراوة من أزرق
She prepared for the creditors a fierce dog... with me, and a club of blue wood remaining.
وشيء عتيد: معد حاضر.
And a prepared thing: made ready and present.
قال الليث: ومن هناك سميت العتيدة التي فيها طيب الرجل وأدهانه.
Al-Layth said: And from there it is named the 'atida, which contains a man's perfume and oils.
هذا ما لدي عتيد ؛
This is what I have prepared and is ready;
العتاد: العدة، والجمع أعتدة وعتد.
Al-'atad: the provision, and its plural is 'a'tidah and 'utud.
والعتاد الشيء الذي تعده لأمر ما وتهيئه له، يقال: أخذ للأمر عدته وعتاده أي أهبته وآلته.
And al-'atad is the thing that you prepare for a matter and make ready for it; it is said: 'He took for the matter his provisions and his 'atad,' meaning his equipment and tools.
لكل حال عنده عتاد أي ما يصلح لكل ما يقع من الأمور.
For every situation, he has 'atad, meaning what is suitable for whatever occurs.
إن خالدا جعل رقيقه وأعتده حبسا في سبيل الله
Indeed, Khalid made his slaves and his prepared items a waqf (endowment) in the way of God.
وأما العباس فإنها عليه ومثلها معها ؛
As for Al-Abbas, it is upon him and its like with it;
الأعتد: جمع قلة للعتاد، وهو ما أعده الرجل من السلاح والدواب وآلة الحرب للجهاد، ويجمع على أعتدة أيضا.
Al-'a'tad: a small plural for al-'atad, which is what a man prepares of weapons, mounts, and war equipment for jihad, and it is also pluralized as 'a'tadah.
أنه احتبس أدراعه وأعتاده ؛
That he endowed his armor and his prepared items;
وإنما هو أعتده، وجاء في رواية أعبده، بالباء الموحدة، جمع قلة للعبد؛
Rather, it is 'a'tadahu, and in one narration it came as 'abidahu, with a single 'ba', a small plural for 'abd (slave);
أنه لا زكاة عليه فيها وأنه قد جعلها حبسا في سبيل الله
That there is no zakat (obligatory charity) upon him for them, and that he has made them a waqf (endowment) in the way of God.
وفرس عتد وعتد، بفتح التاء وكسرها: شديد تام الخلق سريع الوثبة معد للجري ليس فيه اضطراب ولا رخاوة،
And a horse 'atad and 'atad, with the 'ta' open and closed: strong, complete in form, swift in leaping, prepared for running, with no shakiness or weakness.
وبصيرتي يعدو بها عتد
And my mount, a swift one, runs with it.
وبكل طوالة عتد نزاق
And with every tall, swift, and agile one.
والعتود: الجدي الذي استكرش، وقيل: هو الذي بلغ السفاد، وقيل: هو الذي أجذع.
And al-'atud: the young goat that has become stout, or it is said to be one that has reached sexual maturity, or it is said to be one that has reached the age of shedding its milk teeth.
وقد بقي عندي عتود.
And a young goat remained with me.
وأضم العتود أي أرده إذا ند وشرد، والجمع أعتدة وعدان، وأصله عتدان إلا أنه أدغم؛
And I bring back the straying young goat, meaning I return it if it strays and runs away. The plural is 'a'tadah and 'adanan, and its origin is 'atadan, but the 'ta' was assimilated into the 'dal';
واذكر غدانة عدانا مزنمة ... من الحبلق، تبنى حولها الصير
And remember the pleasantness of our young goats, branded... from the Hablaq, around which the enclosure is built.
العتاد القدح، وهو العسف والصحن، والعتاد: العس من الأثل؛
Al-'atad: the cup, which is the bowl and the dish. And al-'atad: the bowl made of tamarisk wood;
وربما سموا القدح الضخم عتادا؛
And sometimes they call a large cup 'atad;
وادع هديت بعتاد جنبل
And call, O guided one, with a large cup of Junbul.
يعلو به كل عتود ذات ود، عروقها في البحر ترمي بالزبد
Every young goat with affection climbs upon it, its roots in the sea throwing up foam.
العتود السدرة أو الطلحة.
Al-'atud: the Sidr tree or the Talh tree.
عتائد: موضع، وذهب سيبويه إلى أنه رباعي.
'Ata'id: a place, and Sibawayh was of the opinion that it is quadriliteral.
وعتيد وعتود: واد أو موضع؛
And 'Utayid and 'Utud: a valley or a place;
أسود بترج، أو أسود بعتودا
Lions in Taraj, or lions in 'Utud.
