And al-'Abdi: is attributed to a branch of Banu 'Uday ibn Janab from Quda'a, who are called Banu al-Ubayd.

فإذا حضر عبيدان الماء سقى ماشيته أول الناس وتأخر الناس كلهم حتى يسقي فلا يزاحمه على الماء أحد

When Ubaydan arrived at the water, he would water his flock before all people, and all people would wait until he watered, so no one would compete with him for the water.

فكان لقمان يورد إبله فيسقي ويسقي عبيدان ماشيته بعد أن يسقي لقمان فضربه الناس مثلا

So Luqman would bring his camels to water, and Ubaydan would water his flock after Luqman watered, and people made it a proverb.

فإذا شربت الإبل أول شربة نحيت إلى المندى لترعى فيه، ثم تعاد إلى الشرب فتشرب حتى تروى وذلك أبقى للماء في أجوافها

When the camels drank their first drink, they would be led to al-Manda to graze, then returned to drink until they were satiated, which kept the water in their bellies longer.

فأخذ الأعشى في جملة الأسارى، ثم سار عمرو حتى نزل عند شريح بن حصن

So al-A'sha was taken among the captives, then 'Amr marched until he encamped with Shurayh ibn Hisn.

فقال: أعطني هذا الأعمى، فقال: وما تصنع بهذا الزمن؟ خذ أسيرا فداؤه مائة أو مائتان من الإبل

He said: Give me this blind man. He replied: What will you do with this one? Take a captive for whom the ransom is one hundred or two hundred camels.

فقال: ما أريد إلا هذا الأعمى فإني قد رحمته، فوهبه له

He said: I only want this blind man, for I have taken pity on him, so he granted him to him.

فقال الأعشى يمدح شريحا: شريح، لا تتركني بعد ما علقت، ... حبالك اليوم بعد القد، أظفاري

So al-A'sha said, praising Shurayh: Shurayh, do not leave me after your ropes have... today, after the past, my talons.

كن كالسموأل إذ طاف الهمام به ... في جحفل، كسواد الليل، جرار

Be like al-Samawal when the great men surrounded him... in a host, like the darkness of night, vast.

فأبى أن يعطيه فقتل ولده

So he refused to give it to him, and he killed his children.
